Given that these days were working with gigabytes of memory I really don't want to encourage anyone to consider such folly for enterprise scale applications and services.
The number of so called "software-engineers" who have inserted O (n^2) code into my projects makes me weep.
What if the code is a matrix multiplication algorithm?
I'm not saying n^2 is unacceptable in all circumstances. (And I was not clear)
My problem is clueless people who would not know an algorithm if it hit them in the face not taking into consideration overall product scalability.
n^2 is ok if you know you only have a handful of inputs, however if you try to do something like filtering an email inbox with a polynomial algorithm then you're unlikely to make customers happy.
might have an impact on many things that geeks care about.
True, but it's equally fair to say:
It may have NO impact on things that geeks care about
It may have impact on things NO geeks care about
That bit of pedant-ism aside it is basic CS, if you think you know anything about computers you should be aware of algorithms and the P!=NP debate. You don't have to care, but you do have to know. Just in the same way you have to be aware of basic atmospheric chemistry, the greenhouse effect and grade 9 biology to have an opinion about the effect of changes to the concentration of atmospheric CO2 on global temperatures.

've been listening to Bach's violin concertos lately on the way to and from work. No matter how bad traffic might be, I cannot listen to that music and not be happy.
You are not alone, I recently purchased a new car that came with a three month satellite radio subscription and I immediately found that driving home listening to the symphony channel was INSANELY relaxing.
2 billion kids are waiting. US spends billions dollars every day on useless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why is it so unrealistic to have a vision where one actually puts money in educating the kids as soon as possible, before they grow old and miss their opportunity of getting inspiration to do big things in their future.
It has been commented over and over that the best way to make the world a safer, saner and more friendly place is to improve education, heath care (and health care access) and develop healthy economies. The OLPC project is one among many that can actually make the world a better place by providing affordable computing.
You might want to start by not insulting the majority of the population that is spiritual.
Au contraire. The majority of the population who is spiritual can bite me.

Profit sharing. If those who put in the extra effort were rewarded by some form of profit sharing like stock options or partial ownership it could be made to work. The idea of working extra time with no extra pay or recognition is a sure way to lower morale. Lower morale leads to lower productivity and higher turnover. Lower productivity and high turnover will seriously impede profitability. Be sure he does the full cost/benefit analysis.
The problem is that by the time we have enough evidence to convince everybody that there is a problem it will be far, far too late to do anything about it.
You have to remember that we live in a world where most people still believe in the supernatural, where people in power still consider prayer to be of value and where people still go around killing each other because they disagree about invisible beings with superpowers.
Trying to convince everyone is a pointless waste of effort. We need to find ways of making people WANT change irrespective of personal religious or political beliefs. If every naysayer on the planet actually WANTED the most fuel efficient vehicles, or light bulbs, if the NIMBYs actually WANTED wind farms in the neighborhood because they saw the advantages then we could actually move forward instead of getting stuck arguing over issues while the world slowly burns.
If you were a kid growing up in the '70s then chances are you or one of your friends had one of the Corgi Batmobiles, and if you did my Grandfather played a small part in your childhood.
My grandfather was a "skilled metal worker", his specialty was the dies for casting metal, and later, plastic parts. His last job before retirement was over a decade with a small design shop in Worcester (UK) that contracted to Corgi. Many of the elements of the Batmobile were done by him and his friends.
Over a decade later he still called the Batmobile design his best work.
He passed away in 2002 at the age of 88 and I can tell you that even in his final months he was still passionate about craftsmanship. In one of the last conversations I had with him he told me about hanging out with his own grandfather who was a basket weaver and being taught how to weave reeds.
Just stop saying what you were saying before, scrub it from visible locations where possible, then begin emitting the new party line. Most people have sufficiently short memories, or high enough tolerance for absurd contradictions, that they won't bat an eye. The people who don't fit in this category will never be satisfied, so why bother worrying about them?
Here's a prediction for you - there will be an Apple stylus tablet within 3 years. Until about 6 months before launch, it will continue to be the dumbest idea ever. Then, Steve will proclaim it to be brilliant.
You can already buy a stylus for the iPad, welcome to 2010.
Obama's just most famous for it because Alito called him on one lie during his last SOTU.
[Citation needed]
Not Alito's BS, I mean evidence that he lied. My recollection is that Alito blew up and spewed ignorant rhetoric.
Did you just hear a wooshing sound?
Heck, even I did and I had that whole chain in summary mode.
Southerners!
Head up to the Nordic countries...
He's complaining about the rain, not the length of the day.
While acoustic guitar is not Bach, Beethoven or Brahms it just so happens that most of my own musical training was for classical guitar. Small world.
he can make a six-string sound like 8-bit video game music
I hope that's better than it sounds.
Given that these days were working with gigabytes of memory I really don't want to encourage anyone to consider such folly for enterprise scale applications and services.
If your system has a fixed amount of memory, then I suggest that they really added O(1) to your projects
Does anybody still write simple numerical problems like that anymore? I have not done anything that trivial in over a decade and a half.

Who are you the fucking geek police? Fuck you! You don't get to dictate to us which of us are and aren't geeks. Fucking asperger retard....
I hope you were aiming for irony.

So I make clean apps that they ban and then they allow this?
You think that your app is somehow on a level playing field with Playboy or any other major corporation? Good luck with that.

Want, hell. Why don't you just make them do what you want? You seem to know what is best for them.
Well of course I think I do, we all do. The difference is that the smartest people in the world happen to agree with me. :)
It's like I tell people all the time, "Think about it. Do you you really think I'd take the time to argue with you if you were right?"
And the other option would be to agree with someone like George Bush, I mean WTF kind of option is that?

, I think it is just the company's general tendency for overstatement and their figuring that the consumers will believe any bullshit they spout off.
You seem to imply this is a Sony specific behavior. Three words:
Palin for President
A micus curiae brief would be fun.
I'm waiting for the iPad 'with wings'.
Surely there's an app for that?

We have always been at war with Eastasia.
Of course it means 1/20th.
Yes people who know mathematics hate that, but it's very common English usage.
So is ain't. And I tell ya, it ain't right!

The first car to add Farmville support will become the best selling car in the country.
And within a year the actuarial tables will show that they are the least insurable.
