The signals it sends back to Earth are data. Those data usually occur in a certain decodable pattern. That pattern changed and is not decodable at this time.
Yes... but we call that a PROTOCOL... fscking journalists.
The scientists don't write the press releases. They dont exercise editorial oversight, they don't choose the headline. That's the science press, and they are to blame.
Which makes me wonder what the comparative rate of alcoholism is between scientists whose research is (badly) publicized and those which are not.
A leaked document by definition has no credibility. Unless and until NOAA releases an official communication, and the spokesperson gets on TV and backs it up (rather than dancing around it as this guy did), the report may as well be written in crayon on the back of a UGA diploma.
hey could quite easily make it a plugin system where it would ship with one or two codecs, and users could "install" others if they choose
Malware posing as codecs is how you get shit like Antivirus XP on PCs.
My thoughts exactly. Browser extensions have already cost Microsoft and Microsoft users MILLIONS. Suggesting they provide a whole new back door in the name of OSS is naive to say the least.
If there's one thing Microsoft has learned about selling to the masses it's that their userbase is infested with stupidity without bound. They can't make the users less stupid, but they can try to reduce the overall cost of stupidity.
Tacky that his first point is that Flash is proprietary, when Apple restricts the apps that can be installed on the phone.
Do you guys work at being stupid or does it come naturally?
I think that Jobs' point is that web content should not be based on a proprietary "standard" .
Many of us have been saying this for years, building websites with Flash has always been fail. And for my money it always will be.
That does not mean that I think that everything people do with flash is awful, or that flash developers lack skill or talent. As an average netizen I'm forced to use flash apps and websites if I want to do things like browse recent car models or (until recently) use youtube and I have to say that many of the things I've seen have impressed me. But in the grand scheme of things it gets in the way more than it helps.
Flash frequently gets used because there's nothing better for a particular task, not because it's the perfect tool or content delivery mechanism.
Satisfied customers tell their friends. Fanboys not only tell their friends, but also try to convert the whole Internet to their way of thinking and tell anyone with a different opinion that they're too dumb to recognize that the product/company they're a fanboy of is incredibly, incredibly awesome...
You mean bloggers vs. productively employed people?
we would still be using floppy disks and parallel ports. Even if you don't like their products, or don't recognize this as progress, I see no reason to be so snide about it.
Agreed. I'm no Apple fanboy (only product I have is a five year old iPod) but I've been rather amazed by the depth and breadth of content free emotional invective we've seen surrounding the iPad launch.
...it's that any and all natural disasters can be stopped by the liberal use of nuclear weapons.
And the most likely side effect to the use of nuclear weapons is that some geek gets laid.

WTF is a "data pattern change"?
Any guesses on first? In China, Hu's on first!
And Wah's on second?
Not going too far... without food, you'd have no energy for sex!
Sex is third... (maybe fourth... books > sex?)
Any guesses on first?
Wait, there's a National Guacamole Day?!? What country do you live in?
Probably yours.
I have been known to argue that food is the second most important thing in life, but this is going a bit far.
inciting the standard "M$ sux" response.
*pfft* Like that would work...

What color is the sky in your world?
For a maverick, I was thinking Sarah Palin.
12.04 Promiscuous Palin?

Please keep your SQL and HTML separate. Don't punish those who will come after you.
Now where's the fun in that?
Tacky that his first point is that Flash is proprietary, when Apple restricts the apps that can be installed on the phone. Do you guys work at being stupid or does it come naturally?
Stupidity on the internet? I'm shocked. SHOCKED!

A browser with HTML-Blocker???
I heard that Microsoft gives one away for free (as in beer). It's called Internet Explorer I think.
Here's why:
The six year old receives public school instruction about inappropriate touching and who to call if it happens (generally, 911, which leads to CPS).
The smart six year old threatens his parents with such a call and claim if they DON'T do as he asks.
If your six year old is this evil then you've already failed as a parent and attempting to protect them from McDonalds is pointless.
I think HTC is supposed to be Lando and Microsoft is the Empire.
Does that make Android/Google the conflicted hero son of the dark overlord Bill Gates?
KILL IT WITH FIRE!!1! :-)
Nuke it from orbit it's the... oh screw the meme.
They call it science-FICTION for a reason. And this is Trek you're talking about.

Interesting... all the responses are either agreement or more "content free emotional invective". :)

Who's side are you on?
The most exciting side.
Many of the countries in the Middle East are controlled by dictators or the equivalent of dictators. Doesn't seem to work so 'well' for them.
Which implies to me that they simply don't care.
aside from three issues, this has been a rock solid release - much moreso than the other two LTS releases were at this stage of their life.
Right now the 10.04 beta is more stable on my laptop then 9.10 ever was... I never did recover from the 9.04 -> 9.10 "upgrade"
