I think my level 12 wizard fought this in a D&D campaign, if I recall it failed it's fort save and was disintegrated. Though obviously that didn't happen to this one as disintegration leaves only dust as everyone knows.
Thanks so much for coming out. Don't call us, we'll call you.
Oh yes, and Humber is a community college. These guys are right out of High School. Think of it as a first year University project. Certainly beats the crap out of anything I did in first year.
FTA: "While school contacts with the space station are routinely made through the Amateur
Radio on the International Space Station program, many of those contacts are made using a
traditional ham radio."
Seriously people - We should feel pretty damned scared that this counts as some sort of
"achievement" to crow about on the Slashdot FP. These guys built a home-brew shortwave
radio as their senior project?
Sorry if this sounds like "playa-hatin'", but gimme a break! Even as a "first", this
doesn't sound like anything to brag about.
They built a rig that could track the ISS, which according to the project lead required an antenna assembly that could accurately track 180 degrees in 10 minutes. Furthermore their rig met all NASA requirements and specifications for the link. (I had the impression that some digital protocol was involved, but the interview I heard was very non-technical.) While the core radio was a HAM, this is far more than "just" a ham rig.
Pray tell, what's your great contribution to the space race?
Let's just hope the next war isn't fought with robots.
Oh I don't know, the American bots will blue-screen, the Russian bots will go off and try to steal credit-cards and the Chinese bots will spend all their time trying to build a firewall... sounds pretty safe to me.
Something better will come along, just like something better than horses came along.
Out with the old, in with the new. It's what we humans do.
Contrary to what the arts majors of the world seem to think technology doesn't just "come along". Ssomebody has to recognize that there's a problem and invent a solution. Sitting back and waiting for the future to happen might work for the majority but if everyone did it we'd still be shoveling horse shit.
You will note however that horses are pretty thin on the ground these days in most major cities. Hopefully the same will soon be true of gas guzzling SUVs.
You are correct. However Java applets are an incredibly brittle technology for provisioning software services.
I would go so far as to argue that Suns initial attempts to introduce Java as a technology for creating dynamic web content has been the single greatest thing working against the adoption of Java in the industry.
Java is a very powerful language and it definitely has its place in my tool-belt, but it certainly ain't for client-side applets.
He may be a totally sad dweeb but he's telling the truth. I should know, I was there. In fact I was the GM.
Oh I believe you both, I played my share of D&D back in the day! But I don't post the results to Slashdot...
Wasn't this a minor sub-plot in a Douglas Adams novel? A program that would write corporate theme tunes based on their financial results?

The required setup is documented here.

Why is there no 'invite friends' function on Slashdot!?
Wait a second! We're allowed to have friends? Why did nobody tell me this before?
Let's just hope the next war isn't fought with robots.

Bitching about it (here, at least) doesn't help.
On the contrary, bitching about it is a basic responsibility of a moral person.

That's like... I dunno.... buying a BMW and putting a LADA engine in it.
You exaggerate, we're talking about Vista not Windows 3.1. It's more like buying a BMW and putting a VW engine in it.
Yeah! Let's post about some obscure piece of software so unused not even unemployed open sores "programmers" want to touch it.
Congratulations, you have officially identified yourself as completely clueless.
Also, if you drink enough of it, you stop caring about all the cow corpses lying around!
I was wondering what that smell was...
Where the FUCK is the revolution?
It was pre-empted by American Idol. But there's some buzz that it will re-appear in the 11PM slot now that the Tonight Show has been moved forward.
I refuse to get into what bad programmers can do.
To be fair, bad programmers can write crap in any language.
What happens when it rains?
I think rain is wet, but then I think that fish is nice, so who am I to judge?
Yeah, well tough shit.
This boxed set includes a Ubuntu CD, Quick Start Guide, and 60 days of professional support from Ubuntu.
$20 for a CD, a printed guide, a pretty box and 60 days of professional support is not so bad really.
They don't have sarcasm on my planet, so unless I'm concentrating, I often fail to notice it.
Ford? Is that you? I seem to be having some serious problems with my lifestyle I'm hoping you can help me with, can you meet me down the pub?
Dear Java Hating Slashdot Editors,
Java is not responsible for "generating class loader errors", any more than Perl is responsible for all the HTML errors on the Slashdot front page.
Here's the link to the W3C HTML Validator, go get yourself a clue.

...don't even get me started on your ideas about transgendered midget porn.
*rushes off to register domain*
I like this concept. *cough* Get something that could meltdown,
Better get that cough looked at, might be from the local coal plant.
Didn't you get the memo? Coal is clean and green now!

A laptop dedicated to an weird MMO is not geeky?
Nethack would be geeky, Runescape is just wrong...
N.B. I'm mostly kidding.
Pretty much the only thing "taxing" I use my laptop for is playing Runescape
