I used Firefox, Noscript, and education. I have a 19 (almost 20) year old daughter and a 15 year old son. Both have done fine without any close monitoring of what they are doing. Yes, I have checked from time to time in the past but for the most part, my kids were turned off by porn and knew enough to speak to strangers safely. Yes, my kids had unfiltered net access from the time they knew how to use a computer. Yes, they have turned out, or are turning out, just fine.
Seriously, give up the control freakery, educate your kids about the basics of life, and then let them go. Check their history every now and then and monitor their behaviors so you can head off anything nasty before it starts... and everything will likely be okay. Nothing will protect them 100% but if you educate them, they really do try to protect themselves.
Even the Department of Defense is not as fascist as you/your company. Just wow.
People on US Military networks do have an expectation of privacy. Go poking through someone's email sometime without law enforcement and a ranking officer in the chain of command and see how much time you spend in prison for that. Well, you might not go to prison, depending on the situation, but you will be in a serious world of hurt.
It is the same with files on shares. (There are exceptions for seeing private data in the course of one's duties but it is not anyone's duty to be spying on private stuff on a DoD network (NIPR or SIPR).
Seriously, your company needs to rethink its security goals and realign its policies to match those goals.
Who cares if he selected for it and sold the seeds? What matters is HOW he got it. Monsanto polluted HIS fields with their crap. Everything else after that is "too bad so sad" for Monsanto. If they want to keep their stuff locked away, they can do so through many methods. Someone higher up suggested indoor/greenhouse type farming. Another suggested that their plants produce a sterile pollen. Once they do lock their stuff up properly, I will go ahead and support them suing people for stealing their stuff. As it stands now, they are making it impossible for farmers to have clean fields.
The classes you dismiss (classes you "had to take") don't have to be of interest to you, but are the differentiator between a college degree and a technical certification. If someone presents themselves to me as a graduate of, say, Harvard, with a CS degree, I expect them to know more that computer science topics - I expect them to be fairly well-rounded.
However, none of that well-roundedness actually implies that they can THINK. Being a walking encyclopedia is useless even if it covers a wide variety of subjects. Personally, I think this misconception of "was exposed to a wide variety of stimuli" is equivalent to "this person can think and solve problems"... and the reverse, "this person was not formally introduced to a wide variety of topics" is equivalent to "this person could not possibly be able to actually think in useful ways".
Ah well, the primitive filters work better than no filters or relying on some moron's judgement as to the quality of the person being hired.
Eventually we'll formalize this further by enabling a quick download directly to our brains that brings everyone up to speed fast regarding the facts of science, discipline, critical thinking, analysis.
I think Facts will be downloadable in the future... I am not so sure about the rest of that though.
I think that certain "habits" that engender discipline might be downloadable but you are talking about modifying "free will" here.
I am unsure about critical thinking. Again, you could teach "habits" that generally lead to critical thinking, but there is a problem with that which I will point out in a moment.
Analysis... implies understanding, which requires imagination... which is also required for critical thinking (e.g. "what if"). I am not even sure imagination is definable. It requires huge amounts of generic processing power instead of dedicated circuitry like processes and facts require. It requires huge amounts of immediate storage space for quick recall.
In other words, you are talking about physically rebuilding the brain. Yes, there will be physical changes when data points and processes are uploaded to a brain, but they will be relatively minor rearrangements of neurons. The other stuff seems like it would be much more... um, altering. But then, I am not a neuroscientist (SP?).
LOL. your.sig says "There's no -1 for "I don't get it."" but OMG you do not get it. I am guessing you missed this:
not having certain functionality does indeed push me away from using a particular piece of software
My response to you was an agreement; however, you seem to have misunderstood the second part of that quote about expectations. Meh.
I was trying to help you understand why
Yet Slashdotters don't hate Linux in spite of all the half-finished applications and constant promises that fixes to long standing bugs are "just around the corner," do they?
Yes, Just as the US state of Georgia was not purely a penal colony... but being a penal colony was a part of its purpose, and well, it all rolls from there. It really is not a big deal as long as you understand what is really going on. Thank you for providing the link that demonstrates that understanding.:)
They are missing the whole point of cheating: To gain an advantage over others.
If there is no advantage, where they have to compete "fairly", then the cheaters will not play there. The only people who will play there are... I am unsure but someone will play there, possibly the cheat writers.
i find nothing offensive in your arguments. I like your logic. I do wonder about part of what you are saying though...
I ultimately chose windows phone because of... Xbox integration
I suppose if you have an XBOX, this might be attractive, but I fail to understand why. What does it get you? If I were to own an XBOX, it would be to play games. Do the games transfer over to your phone? It does not seem likely. Honestly, of what use is XBOX integration?
It makes calls (brilliant call quality on the Nokia hardware by the way)
While I am sure Nokia builds quality hardware, I really have to question the reliability of Microsoft software. A prior example is with Windows Mobile 5.5 and dropped calls. The hardware portion worked fine and once the phone was rebooted, it would stop dropping calls. Not sure what would trigger it as it did not happen on a daily basis, but try having it happen repeatedly during a life-changing discussion. Yeah, that kind of burn lasts a VERY long time. I have heard this latest effort by Microsoft is a complete rewrite but Microsoft is definitely not known for its software quality (even if it is better than many companies writing software nowadays).
For myself, I feel forced to use Android. It is somewhat buggy and unreliable but not much worse than IOS. I have a few IOS based devices and will not be buying any more of them, especially phones (last iPhone I bought was a 3gs). I do not like the "lock" on it. I like being able to see what the damned thing is doing from within the operating system. I do not want to be forced to attach a network sniffer and having that be the only way to see WTF my device is doing.
Open? Lol, it was open in the sense that the lock on it (only signed programs can run and YOU do not get the key) was not turned on. At least on my phone. The manufacturer had the option of locking you out entirely. That is hardly what I would call open.
It is a shame that I already commented, otherwise I would mod this crap down.
My WP7 works flawlessly with my corporate Exchange Server
He spoke SPECIFICALLY about self-signed certs and you mention NOTHING about self-signed certs; therefore, your entire "it works fine for me" is worse than useless. Since you are modded +4, I am going to assume that the people who did so believe that there are no problems with self-signed certs and Exchange. What a travesty of injustice. I guess they will get what they asked for though when they try to get it to work...
I do have mod points and I *could* mod you down... but for what? I see no intentional trolling but I do see a lack of clear thought. Let me help you:
As an anonymous coward already said, you are paying for the shit on the phone. There is a certain expectation when it comes to paying for things. Concerning Linux and associated software, not having certain functionality does indeed push me away from using a particular piece of software... but I am paying nothing. Why should I whine or cry about it? This is probably where someone might see you as trolling because you are oblivious to the types of expectations based on the type of transaction. Oh well.
I may as well take this moment to answer the question posed by the "article".
WinCE was crap. Windows Mobile 5.5 was crap. I see many difficulties in windows that should not be there... so what exact motivation is there for me to spend my money on a phone operating system written by Microsoft. Honestly, I feel an aversion to using anything Microsoft because of the lack of reliability as perceived by me.
I have heard rumours that you can leave Windows Server up and running without reboots indefinitely like any *nix type operating system has been able to do since day 1... but every server I have ever dealt with was more reliable if it were rebooted weekly; even though monthly mostly works too.
On the bright side, it appears that Microsoft spends a lot of money on quality control... I just wish they would spend money on buying the highest quality developers and getting the fucking politics out of the development and design processes.
A very convincing argument to be sure. Let's take a look at some of your examples.
License to drive a car: Okay, the argument behind that is that it ensures that everyone who is driving legally has at least a passing knowledge of the rules of the road. It is not a big deal if they do not know the rules of the road until you start placing lots of other people on the same road. I do not like the tracking aspect but it is mostly tolerable for the reason already given.
Register your car with the state: Hm. Trickier to rationalize. Vehicles should be inspected for safety because other lives are endangered. I do not agree with having to display a license plate. It does make a nice place to put a sticker to show you have been inspected though.
Register my house: Huh? I never had to register my house. I did have to register the deed for the house, which is what I suppose you mean. I like having an official external entity keeping track that I own my house. I do not want my bank playing funny games with ownership. I also like to pay my taxes, with them, I buy civilization (a stolen sig quote).
Registering pets: I have never done so but it seems like a good idea so that you can get your dog back after it wanders off. It also seems like a good idea so that we do not have to kill your dog because it bit someone. The only test for rabies is... not so healthy to the dog.
Hunting license: Too many humans, not enough animals. It needs to be regulated in some way or else there would be no wild animals left.
Marriage license: Again, having an external entity keep track of serious promises between two separate people (which is what a marriage is) seems like a good idea for when things do not work as promised.
Gun license: I am having a hard time thinking of any valid reason to register guns. Merely owning one does not affect anyone else in any way shape or form. I can think of plenty of negatives though. The first and most primal reason that I can see is that when an invading power takes over, they merely have to look at the lists and go get all of the guns. The invading power does not even have to be external.
Perhaps you could give a valid reason for actually registering weapons other than "it should not be a problem because you register everything else"?
Guys, the vast majority of script-kiddies are not planning out everything with meticulous detail. In fact, most script-kiddies are script-kiddies because they are uneducated and never learned impulse control, and act irrationally and emotionally. They're not going to write their own malicious programs. The vast majority of them will not understand even the basic structure of the program in the first place.
Only 4 people murdered because someone else had a gun. There were hundreds of potential victims there and the gunman had PLENTY of ammo. Well, I hope this helps.
As long as they make it a single purpose device and cut off ALL network access, the option of not updating is mostly viable.
I'm glad at least that you agree that this story is tabloid sensationalism.
I very much agree. This article is absolutely terrible. Why can't the actual authors of the app present their case to the public reasonably? Now, I am convinced that they are just greedy people who are trying to steal from even greedier people. An honest argument would sway me but these tactics push me away. Again, it is terrible. No, it is obscene.
Oh, and cheers that we were in partial disagreement but were able to communicate. Thank you.
New iOS versions don't typically make existing software stop working. But if it's that important to her then she doesn't have to update the OS.
Really, we're supposed to be pandering to emotional fears of what may happen in the future? To make an exception to the law on the basis of it?
Ridiculous.
What is ridiculous is the amount of trolling. Since I recognize your name, I assume you are not doing it intentionally... but come on dude, you really expect anyone to believe that not updating a device is a viable option? Those updates are not purely for new features given to you out of the manufacturers good will.
But yeah, you and the rest of the internet trolls are right. Patents should be deeply respected no matter the difficulty caused and that no case has been decided in court.
On the other hand, the article is a troll too. Look at the wording of the headline alone. Not only does it imply that the toddler made the app, but 4 years old is no longer a toddler anyways... kind of like calling a 17 year old girl a small child. WTF? And of course, it is the big mean corporation that is pulling it JUST to spite the little girl. Oh my god this world is terrible.
Weirdly, I have the option of moderating in a thread I posted in. Again.
I will not mod your post -1 moronic partially because there is no such mod but mostly because I will follow the spirit of the rules and not mod in an article I have commented in... Today is a lucky day for your karma.
Hi Galactic Dominator. First, thank you for the insults. You are right that I am a total technical moron.
Now that the stupidity is out of the way, your reasons for the marking of the previous post informative do not make any sense whatsoever.
Perhaps they didn't know KDE worked on Win 7.
It does not work on Windows 7. It is essentially alpha with major bugs in the code and major features missing. Being able to run portions of code is not release quality code no matter how you slice it.
Perhaps they did and were glad someone corrected it.
Ummm. Say what? I am the only one providing any informative corrections here.
Perhaps they looked into the matter and saw many examples of people successfully running it. Perhaps they tried it themselves and it worked.
Hm. Not sure how they found the systray stuff working and perhaps they did not run it long enough to see any bugs, but the bugs are there and they are even admitted to on that page. Perhaps running pre-beta software is great for people who want to help a project along and do not care if any data is lost, but to present KDE on Windows as a viable alternative for anyone who is not interested in being a beta tester is just absurd.
Here, this is in BOLD on the page that is linked: KDE on Windows is not yet in a final state, so some applications may be unsuitable for everyday use.
So I am spewing FUD? ROFLMAO. I am merely repeating what the KDE folks themselves are saying.
I have to wonder what your agenda is. Trolling or just a mouth-huffing basement dweller who has trouble seeing reality?
The idea that you want to work with someone who spends their time trying to half-ass things to save themselves time is not only stupid, it's completely the opposite of what you want in a professional environment.
You clearly have no idea what the term hacker means in the context of the article. Hackers do not do such stupid things as you describe. They do their job more efficiently than everyone else and are capable of "thinking outside the box" and will implement such solutions when required.
In other words, if you see a "hacker" acting like you describe, that hacker is NOT interested in working for you or you are giving them excessive amounts of free time.
Yes, like that. Read what you linked to. It is NOT ready to be used on Windows 7. I know, I tried a few days ago because I could not get Debian to work smoothly off of a thumb drive and I do not have enough space on my primary drive to dual boot.
I am unsure why you are marked as informative... perhaps the mods did not actually check what you were linking to just as you did not read it. Meh.
Reading the comments on this thread, I'm realizing that likely within our lifetimes, we'll be having the same debate about strong cryptography that we're now having about guns
Umm... you do realize why openssl was developed overseas (meaning outside of America since I am American) right? You do realize why the author of pgp was in danger of being arrested? ITAR. Strong crypto IS already considered the equivalent of normal weapons.
I used Firefox, Noscript, and education. I have a 19 (almost 20) year old daughter and a 15 year old son. Both have done fine without any close monitoring of what they are doing. I have been using Windows Phone for a good 6 months now, and I really do feel backward when using people's iPhones.
Wait. What? How does an iPhone interface feel "backwards" to you?
Perhaps it is this:
People complain about the tiles, but when using friends phones they have a sea of icons that honestly just hurt my eyes to scroll through.
Aren't the tiles on WP7&8 just enlarged icons without background transparency though? I can enlarge the icons on my (not iPhone) phone...
Maybe I am just missing something though.

I wanted to mod you up just as I wanted to mod the sibling post down... but then I saw that you neglected to deal with his direct problem.
We renewed the cert
and all you said was
I have setup around ten different WP7 phones with various self signed certs and got them all working fine
What will happen to those perfectly working phones when your self-signed cert expires? You do not know and therefore your answer is useless.
