So let me tell you a quick little story: A friend was bringing over his cat while he was going out of town for a bit. He walked in the door of my apartment and IMMEDIATELY commented on my computer monitor. He was roughly 10 meters away from the monitor and he already knew something was different about it. He couldn't tell what was different, but he wanted my monitor immediately. From 10 meters away. Where no difference can be seen. Right?

  12. If people were willing to buy a 20hp car with no heater, no AC, no electronics, no radial tires, no electric starter, no air bags, no power seats, a life span of 50,000 miles or so, and that needed servicing every month, I'm sure there would be a $4286 car available today.

The motor only produced 20hp because manufacturing tolerances were loose and the method of apportioning gasoline was inconsistent. For the same "price", we can make a motor spit out 200hp.

No environment controls? Not necessarily a non-starter for everyone. I have owned a few cars where those controls were essentially dead.

No electronics? EFI is not THAT expensive, perhaps even cheaper than carburetors.

Air bags I will give you.

Radial tires are not much more expensive to produce than the old style tires since we have modern ways of manufacturing them.

Electric starter? An aftermarket starter is $200. This is a non-issue.

    Power seats? Power windows? Unnecessary.

Lifespan was purposefully cut short, mostly by GM, in a bid to get more money. That is why I *still* will not buy any American vehicles.

So airbags and electronic fuel injection bring the cost from $4286 to $20k? That doesn't sound right.

Fuck American auto manufacturers. Greedy bastards. I hope they all burn in hell. The Europeans are pretty greedy too, but at least they deliver some satisfaction. Buy Asian cars to get value for your money.

By only acknowledging the achievements and making no comment on the negative behaviour, once that behaviour has been brought to your attention, then in silence you support that behaviour.

Well, the simple way to fix this is for every award that is given out to anybody, attach this disclaimer:

"We understand that nobody is a saint and even behavior that is socially acceptable now may not be in the future, so with that in mind, while we honor this individual for their notably good behaviour, we simultaneously castigate any and all unacceptable behaviour they may have engaged in during their lifetime."

Or, you could just not give awards out ever because nobody is perfect and we wouldn't want to encourage any salacious behaviour.

In a sane society, the award would be given and the person who exhibited the poor behaviour would either attend psychological retraining or suffer criminal penalties.

The only time it is acceptable to withdraw an award is when the award is granted through fraudulent means... like if Nolan Bushnell actually had not done any of the things the award was for.

Essentially, what you and many others seem to be arguing for is that nothing positive can ever be recognized/rewarded if the recipient of said award had ever done anything bad at any point in time of their life.

Let's assume Mr. Bushnell had received a speeding ticket once in his life. "Had this award not been rescinded, then the GDC would, at best, be ignoring the problem and at worst would be tacitly supporting the behaviour."

I am betting that your brain will get hung up on how trivial the crime is so let's make it easier for you.

Let's assume that Mr. Bushnell had killed 6 million people. Would Time magazine be encouraging the killing of 6 million people by having him as their "Man of the Year"?

And a rewording (for your diminutive intellect) of what I said is:

They will not go to their care provider because their care provider has already told them 99 times that whatever problem the patient thinks they are experiencing is all in their head and nothing to worry about... until it becomes a full blown problem.

Is that a little easier for your thought processes to digest?

I do not actually mean to be insulting. I fully understand that there are people with varying cognitive abilities. I am just frustrated at trying to communicate while the average person just doesn't seem to operate at any cognitive level that modern society needs. I feel like my original message, delivered through anecdote, was perfectly clear... but apparently, that is a level of abstraction too high for you to grasp and it frustrated me. Have a nice day and don't forget to wear your helmet.

On the other hand, my experience has been that doctors have no fucking idea what that mysterious pain is and can only diagnose it once it has become something serious.

My skin is currently eating itself (has been for 3 years now, likely bacteria) and the doctors/dermatologists just shrug and hand me steroid cream. Bear in mind, this is only a current problem. Don't talk to me about past issues that were apparently WAY beyond what medical science could discover (but were eventually found to be simple once it became terrible).
