    What is sad about the US in general, and Slashdot specifically, is that the comments here about the actual data and the failures in this correlative model, are basically left alone, while all the racist "See even them super smart computers know nig... sorry... blacks are ebil crooks" shitposts, get to +5 almost immediately.

    Wow! What Slashdot are you reading? I have seen comments ranging across the entire spectrum. Most of the higher rated comments do not even come close to saying what you are claiming.

    Some of the +5 comments do indeed mention that there is some sort of correlation between race and "ebil crooks", which is, fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your personal bias), true. I have seen some highly commented address this clearly and logically. Read this:

    If you think those comments are circle-jerks of bias, I do not know how to help. There is something broken with your thought processes and I am not qualified to fix it.

    There at least a dozen more like that which are highly rated comments. Please take a moment and re-evaluate what you think you are seeing. Perhaps there is something wrong with your Slashdot filters or your own personal perceptions.

    Lol. You speak truth; however, my experience with autocorrect is that it introduces more errors than it fixes. Very frustrating when the word "damn" gets changed to "Damon". I guess I just do not speak politically correctly enough. Ah well, I am older and will die off soon.

    I'll honestly don't even know when I'll consider upgrading, so long as it keeps running.

    It will be a few more years, then the power savings will make it worthwhile. If you run Linux or other Free OS on it and do not care about the cost of power, you should not need to "upgrade" until you experience hardware failure.

    What is crappy graphics on OS X?
    Eve Online looks on OS X the same as on Windows, so does world of warcraft.

    I have played Eve Online in OS X, Windows, and Linux. As long as you have a decent gfx chip, you are good and everything looks mostly the same (OpenGL vs DirectX does cause some minor changes). If you are relying on Intel integrated graphics, Eve is unplayable except at the lowest of resolutions with the smallest amount of eye candy. Granted, Eve Online is best played through a spreadsheet, but if you want to see anything, you need to have a nice discrete gfx chip.

    I do not know or care about what is actually going on here. I just wanted to comment on this particular idea that you are promulgating. Clarify it perhaps?

    As long as there are a set of rules about the type of comments that are not acceptable in that forum and it is fairly and evenly enforced, I see no problem with removing certain ... tweets? I dunno. I never "got" twitter.

    You need some perspective my friend. Try relaxing, breathing slowly, and having a shot of whiskey or a toke off of a joint. You have no idea how crazy you sound right now. You are too invested; although I am unsure what exactly you are invested in. Just let it go and open your eyes again. The world is an ugly place but it does not have to be like this. Not like this.

    Lots of things are not easy and yet they are done on a daily basis anyways. That is not an excuse that is tolerable. Microsoft can easily afford the smartest people on this planet to solve such an issue and they do not even have to share how they did with other people! Hurray for closed source software right?

    Such mealy mouthed excuses are unbecoming of a person on Slashdot. Some of us have written software that is guiding a robot on Mars. Some of us have written software that is behind some of the strongest AI on this planet. Some of us have done scientific research that makes dealing with concurrency look like childs play.

    And you want to throw out the excuse of "it's not easy"? Really? You did not think you would get called out on such bullshit? By people who have done concurrent programing?

    Whatever. I should not have been rude. Carry on kind sir. Life is not easy.

  10. More specifically, why are OSes not designed, and computing hardware not designed, so that the GUI cannot be slowed down by other slow processes, process switching, or I/O / virtual memory thrashing.

    The same reason all browsers will run all scripts unless you stop all scripts or install an addon that makes script handling more sane: You do not matter. The hardware matters. The software matters. The business trying to get money from you matters. Everyone/everything matters but you. It is incredibly obvious; otherwise, things would be different. The reason you do not matter is because there are 7 billion more just like you.

    Sounds to me like someone feels the need to control someone elses environment "for their own good". Why do you care if the person next to you fails completely and utterly because of a lack of self control? Take away WiFi? Why?

    Don't get me wrong here, I am not encouraging adding distractions into the classroom with the express intent of trying to make the students distracted so they can not learn... but, I fail to see how "forcing" them to pay attention has value.

    Think about it for a second... if the person next to you fails, then you have less competition for the job they did not become qualified to seek.

    Plus for too many students the computer is just a HUGE distraction. Why would a kid pay attention to a boring history or math class when they could be doing something fun on social media?

    I fail (lol) to see the problem here. Am I missing something? The student paid good money to be in that class. If they choose not to participate how is that a problem unless they are distracting others?

    The teacher is paid to teach, the student pays to have that teacher teach. If the student thinks that throwing away their money (and likely their future security) is a smart choice, who are we to interfere with that choice? Is freedom not a thing anymore? We have to control other peoples actions for their own good?

    Its break, from Antarctica's fourth-largest ice shelf, changes the border shape of the peninsula forever even though the remaining ice shelf will continue to grow.

    It is the use of words like this that make me wonder about the sanity of the people writing this shit.

    The headline should be: Unfathomably large chunk of ice just broke off of an ice shelf in Antarctica.

    Why would anyone care if the fucking coastline has changed? Forever. The universe is not a static place, coasts even less static than most. Why is the coastline changing forever even a part of this story?

    I am sure such insanity is being promulgated for a reason. I have no idea if it is to drive me away from, or to, whatever mouthbreathing thing they are trying to push but I am weary of it.

    Just provide facts. A VERY light touch of speculation of what it could mean is okay as long the writer specifically mentions it is speculation. It is almost as if we can't think for ourselves or something... or actively being prevented from thinking?

    Oculus' mistake is in focusing purely on the consumer retail - where $800 + $2000 for a PC is a tough sell, no matter what they do.

    That is correct... so why are they putting further restrictions on the device? I used the original Rift on Linux. I was quite happy and was dying to buy the 1080p developers model... and then Facebook bought them. No more Linux. Tied in to Facebook. Etc etc etc. So many fucking restrictions.

    Yeah, I do not and will not own a Rift. I am tempted to ask my friend to sell me his original Rift so I can play TF2 with it on Linux again.

    However, you are either outright lying or not revealing the whole economic situation here.

    I am trailer trash. I know poverty very well. There is absolutely no way that a family of 6 bring in $25k owns ANYTHING. You can not even buy health care for $25k for a family of 6. The premiums alone would take all of it. God forbid their children should need to actually use that healthcare insurance they bought. Between deductibles and uncovered items, 4 children will eat up thousands of dollars in medical bills.

    Since I will choose to believe that you are not lying, I would *highly* recommend that you reevaluate your claims.

    These fuckers (authorities in general) want to turn the entire country into a police state so that they can control every aspect of our lives, and then prove that once they have full control, they can't prevent the behavior that prompted them to seek full control to begin with.

    Which recommended explicitly to split MS into two companies - an OS company and an applications company- specifically to stop this kind of bundling from taking place and disadvantaging competitive companies.

    On the bright side, this is no longer disadvantaging competitive companies.

    On the dark side, the reason it is no longer anti-competitive is that there are no more competing companies.

    On the even darker side, had you not started your comment in the subject and then continued it in the body, the words quoted above would look more sensible... but you go with your badass self. Everyone else just sucks for wanting subject lines to contain... well, subjects. I know it is utterly astounding to you that the subject line might be for subjects. We are hackers here. We repurpose stuff all the time. What is the problem with repurposing the subject line? Nothing. No problem.

    Hm. I see Microsoft's campaigns have been effective.

    People want to buy Windows. They want it to work. They do NOT want security and bug fixes.

    If I buy software, I expect it to fully work in all of the ways that it was advertised to work. The thought of endlessly modifying critical system code without full logging of what is being changed and why is not merely a security nightmare from which you can not awaken, it removes all pretense of control from the ostensible owner of said software.

    You are not a youngling. I am surprised you are falling for the "and security updates" line... but meh. Principles are hard to find since very few people stick by theirs.

    Oh right. No piece of software more complex than "hello world" has bugs. My response to that is that they should have ironed out enough of the bugs to where they can say that the product is fit for sale as advertised... or not sold the software at all. But, that is just me. I have weird notions that nobody else subscribes to anymore. Any excuse will do.

  23. While I am against the AT&T/Time-Warner merger (and was also against the Comcast/NBC-Universal merger), I think this goes too far.

    Eh? Shit went too far a looooooonng time ago.

    It is arguable that this deal should be pushed through so that the State can fail sooner instead of dragging it on for possibly hundreds of years. Absolute total control is what they want... and it seems they will get it. Once they get it, they will realize utter failure. Power can only be extracted from a gradient. Once all power is centralized, there is no more gradient to extract work from and nothing more can happen.

    TL;DR I am tired of observing the process of control being centralized. Let's just get it over with already.
