Am I wrong to consider energy efficiency problem with light bulbs largely solved?
No. You are not wrong; however, you are failing to consider that some people are not happy with others having choice. They might make the wrong choice! It is incumbent upon those people to remove choices so that the wrong decision can not be made.
TL;DR, control freaks are why this is an issue. Who would pay more for less, willingly?
See subject. I want my email to be flat, boring, and uninteresting. I guess, in a way, I am excited about all the new scams and viral outbreaks that this will precipitate, but for the most part, I think this is an absolutely terrible thing.
Prove me wrong. (You might be able to prove me wrong in theory, but come back in two years and let's see if your proof still stands. ROFLMAO)
I worked at a UPS hub in San Diego and they had no drug sniffing dogs. Sure, if a driver noticed a massive marijuana smell from a package, the package would be given to the police, but it is not hard to keep your package from being so smelly that the driver picking it up has no idea what is inside.
There may be drug sniffing dogs in some distribution centers but certainly not in all; furthermore, it is likely illegal (not tested in a court of law, yet) to have a dog at a distribution facility.
"It's my birthday! But only from 1pm today to 1pm the next day" fails a basic sanity check - the notion of 'today' becomes bunk.
But, how does changing the clocks by an hour twice a year solve that issue? Or, are you conflating two separate issues for nefarious purposes (purposeful ignorance)?
A blanket prohibition on linking to copyrighted content would effectively "disappear" a lot of emerging and professional artists from the internet.
Yeah, but it will be possible to reappear if you sell your soul, I mean copyrighted works, to a publisher.
That is the end game. Are you surprised?
I am surprised that they are not even considering all of the other negatives. They are just focusing on controlling the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx without considering whether or not that is a good idea.
Honestly, I am utterly delighted about this result. It is the beginning of the end. Someone with power may notice and soften this law up, but as it stands right now, this is going to send society into a dystopian tailspin and millions will die directly from the social unrest that occurs. This should get REALLY interesting before I die of old age.
I love watching short-sighted greedy mistakes come back and bite people. This one is a real doozy!
The changes I'm seeing all over the N-Atlantic tell me that this is more than a 'local climate change', science confirms this and we have examples of what happened earlier in the earth's history when this much carbon dioxide was de-sequestered into the atmosphere.
This is not a refutation of what nonBORG was saying. All nonBORG was doing was acknowledging the local changes that were occurring to Sique, but in themselves, are not proof of climate change.
By doing this, he did not deny climate change. Here is a quote of his post to demonstrate:
That is not to say there is not global climate change, there is...
And then you say this:
Given the choice between believing thousands of scientists saying the climate is changing and a few useful idiots shilling for the fossil fuel industry who say it isn't, I'm going to pick the scientists.
Well sure, but that is a false choice. There is a more reasonable path of action here, which Sique touched upon: Look for yourself. Pay attention to the details. Seek out more information.
I am not a professional scientist. I have not attended college. I did not graduate high school.
I have lived in various locations around the world. All of them, except the equatorial regions, appear to have, on average, grown warmer. That is one person, and is not a scientifically significant data point by itself.
I "know" that all things balance out. All scientific "laws" appear to agree. Take the three main "laws" of thermodynamics, they all talk about balance. Same with Newton's "laws", such as an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by another force.
That being said, we know that CO2 acts like a blanket; therefore, more heat is being contained because we know we are emitting CO2 into the atmosphere. What happens to a system that receives more energy? Well, according to Newton, that system changes.
I REALLY don't understand what all the controversy is about. I see how it happened, but I fail to see how people fail to discipline their minds in such a way that they are unable to go find the fucking truth (as much as we can understand anyways) themselves.
Climate *IS* changing. Every prediction about the exact changes has been dead wrong. But climate is definitely changing, and using "probability", those changes are not likely to be useful and could possibly even be extremely deadly.
The only solid solution we have so far is reducing CO2 output. This is an untenable solution as the only way this planet can support billions of people is to extract energy in ways that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. I mean, try selling "4 billion people have to die today to avert a disaster a thousand years from now" to the general public. Most people will just deny that there is a problem to begin with. Their lives depend on not doing anything about climate change. This should not be a surprising result.
Where the fuck did I go just now? I apologize, but I will still hit submit anyways. Just ignore my ramblings.
Maybe people who are concerned about the climate changing shouldn't have used glaciers shrinking as an example of climate change. Now, morons can easily shoot down claims of climate change.
People on both sides are too stupid to tolerate. *sigh*
Times change but so far we've always been able to fill the void with new jobs serving a new era. I don't see any reason that this will ever stop.
There are enough resources on this planet for everyone. That is not the problem. The problem is that automation changes things. Well, changing things is not really the problem. What the real problem is that things are set up that when they change, fewer and fewer people benefit from those changes and more and more people find themselves without resources. The people who have the lion's share of the resources are ensuring that more and more of the resources that are gathered, accrue to them. That leaves fewer resources for the rest of the people.
People are dying every day from lack of resources. Millions, maybe even billions, are having the natural path of their lives warped and distorted in negative ways because of the resource distribution issues... and since might makes right, the trend of fewer and fewer people being able to gather any resources for themselves will increase. At some point, the increase in inbalance will become exponential and the human race will suffer yet another bottle neck, where we drop down to a population of 8 thousand people again.
As long as resource distribution is equitable, automation provides great opportunities. As soon as people don't get out at least as much as they put in, society will crumble. Who wastes time doing things that do not bring benefit of some sort?
I know plenty of homeless white males in the US. I've known some in other countries, too.
Oh. Americans eat like pigs and Europeans eat like fastidious aristocracy?
Or are American homes designed by the market to be less energy efficient?
Or are the automobiles offered to Americans less fuel efficient?
People are people. Individually, Americans are no more or less wasteful than people in any other country. Any differences are due to leadership which the masses have very little control over.
I find your view of Americans to be bigoted and distasteful.
I know plenty of homeless white males in the US. I've known some in other countries, too.
Awesome! Ask them where they get help so I can let the rest of the homeless white males know.
I was homeless at one point. There was absolutely ZERO assistance available to me. I could have just laid down and died and society would not have lifted the slightest finger to even say "bye", much less help. Oh, sure, if I had been a minority, a felon, a female, a child, or even just religious, I could have found some help. But no, a single white male is utterly worthless to society if they can not, at an absolute minimum, carry themselves 100% of the time. White males are, apparently, the easily discardable bedrock of society.
I am excited that things have changed so much since I was homeless. I eagerly look forward to your plethora of examples of help available.
Active on the network does not mean pinging the towers. It means transmitting non-protocol information, such as texts or voice data.
Yes, you could be using your phone in offline mode. How would invading the contents of your phone prove that? Timestamps on files?
It can be "active on the network" and I'm using Skype or Facetime or reading Facebook or using Google Maps to search for stuff. Do you really want the telco recording every site and packet so it can respond to a subpoena regarding use of a mobile electronic device correctly?
They already record that those packets were transmitted. AFAIK, they do not keep the contents, but knowing the NSA, those contents are kept somewhere.
TL;DR, the phone company is a more reliable measure of a device being active at a set time than your phone itself... unless you are watching the phone live, in which case, there is no need to find out if the phone was in use as it was observed to be in use.
This is why I always fight you about spreading pollution across populations.
An American and a European consume roughly the same amounts of everything.
America as a country manufactures a fuckload more than European countries. This, of course, results in more pollution. And yet here you sit insinuating that Americans, individually, are greedy pigs next to the oh so wonderful European.
Fuck off with that shit. Your un-nuanced view of pollution is fucking annoying.
Actually I'd like a mode where it essentially limited to the speed limit unless I chose to exceed it for lets say overtaking. I have this almost in my current car instead of cruise control a speed limit is set.
Mercedes from as far back as 2004, likely even earlier, can do this. If you own a Mercedes and are unaware, it is part of the cruise control. Read your manual.
I have no idea what you are really trying to say. Something profitable by definition simply means that which benefits.
Well, yeah. We all know that. People are talking about the next step in the profit category: Is the transaction reasonable or fair for BOTH sides?
I mean, it is VERY profitable for me to hit you over the head and take your money. I spend a few minutes finding a stick or piece of metal and end up with cash. Very profitable indeed... is that the model of how you want your businesses to operate in a society?
Adult me appreciates that you are trying to protect your children, but thinks that censoring reality hurts the child more than reality itself does. At worst, reality can kill your child. At worst, censorship leads to severe mental issues and an inability to deal with reality. Which situation is worse?
(don't take the fuck you personally, i am not saying that as an adult)
We should all be far more concerned that people are basing financial decisions on something posted on Twitter of all places.
Hm. It is Mr. Musk using Twitter, so it is a valid source, which is what gives the government leeway to go after him. What I find absurd is that the language is casual. Absolutely NOBODY should be expecting firm results based on casual language. Words like "almost" and "around" are not words that say anything definite. If it is not definite, why is it a problem?
So Ford just recalled 1.8 million vehicles which nearly equals their annual production of 1.9 million vehicles. Holy shit! Can you imagine the bad press that would ensue if Tesla had to do that? But with Ford, hardly anyone blinks an eye.
That is an expected result for Ford. FORD = Found On Road Dead
Tesla is held to a higher standard, rightfully or not. *shrug*
I doubt I will ever buy a Tesla (I don't want information transmitters outside of my control and inside of my car), but I will NEVER willingly buy a Ford.
someday millions of years from now some ETs will discover a disk with a bunch of old testament style begats of a bunch of dumb humans that went extinct because they could not keep their environment clean and stable
If humanity was wiped out, it would be the sole evidence of an "intelligent" life form ever existing on this planet. As a scientist, this would be an amazing find. It would prove that they were not alone (at one point!) in the Universe.
I dunno. I could think of worse things to waste money/energy on.:)
I wonder if any of those pages will contain information about the crimes the state of Israel has perpetrated against Palestinians.
This would be a valid question if those pages contained information about the crimes the Palestinians had committed against Israel.
Since this is a knowledge project and not a political project, I would expect the answer to both questions is: No.
(No, I am not interested in arguing about who started it, both sides are fucking pathetic. I could get behind glassing the entire area with nuclear bombs and forgetting about the stupidities and atrocities happening there on a daily basis.)
Am I wrong to consider energy efficiency problem with light bulbs largely solved?

Those without a job would also like a piece of the pie.
Fuck the pie! People want to eat!
Rich people: Those fuckers want some of my luxuries. Fuck 'em if they can't figure it out on their own!
Poor people: I want to eat tonight! Is that so much to ask for?
The rest of us: The rich and the poor are BOTH greedy!

Bad pilots are a fact of life, hence the only way to protect passengers from pilots is more automation, not less.
Bad automation is a fact of life, hence the only way to protect passengers from automation is more pilot training, not less.
Oddly, nobody seems to have mentioned yet that the passenger could have been the one using the phone.
Or, that the police can subpoena the phone company and ask if the phone was active on their network.
There is absolutely no need and no justified use for going through a persons phone... other than for fishing expeditions.
So while it is true your life can suck horribly if you don't have a job, you won't be left to die.
I can see that you have never been a homeless white male in the US before. You have no idea of what you are speaking.
