    Hm. Isn't the effect of purposefully looking from that point of view effectively looking at the person in a partially undressed manner? It effectively "removes" the skirt.

    As a female wearing a skirt, I would feel violated. As a male wearing a kilt, I would feel disturbed. If my skirt or kilt flapped up (due to wind or such), I would feel exposed.

    laws should never be static. they need to be updated to fit the age. copyright was never updated in peoples' favor, only in corporations' favor. that, in itself, means that it was not maintained in a fair and just manner.

    I disagree. Laws should be static. They should be based on principles so that they do not need to change with each new technology. Search and seizure of personal effects? Applies to email and phone conversations now as much as it did to letters in the 1700s. The current unconstitutional interpretation is absolute shit because it violates the principle behind the 4th. THAT is the real problem.

    Yes, absolutely.

    Hm. "Absolutely sure" implies seeing it with their own eyes through a window or somesuch. In that case, they absolutely do NOT need a warrant.

    If all evidence points towards that painting being inside the house but they have not seen it with their own eyes, then yes, they needs a warrant.

  12. So the current state of affairs is that there is no law (yet) concerning use of these devices, and some in the government are arguing that no law is needed.

    It seems someone here does not understand how America is supposed to work. We all know how it does work so let's leave THAT argument for another time.

    Long story short, governments (Federal, State, County, City) are not allowed to do anything that they are not explicitly authorized to do. It is the citizens that do not need explicit authorization for the things that they do.

    This police department is wrong and should have had a judge issue a warrant. It is this "cowboy" shit thinking that brings us closer and closer to a perfect police state.

    On the issue of using the "controversial device" to track the criminal in this case, I'm not so ready to jump on the "police broke the law" bandwagon.

    There are numerous other reasons I am against this without a warrant (and actually HIDING it from the judge) but what about all of the other cell phones in the area? Were their rights not violated?

    Rather than getting all of those folks to sign a legal document saying it was okay for their phones to be intercepted as well, why not just get a legal warrant signed by an actual judge? Clearly, the police broke the law.

    One of the oddest things we see when we get into these conversations is that way too many people seem to think "If Hitler had done this, the Nazi's would have won the war."

    Its as if the Allies were somehow not capable of any innovation, and would just stood still for the superior German technology to tear them apart. Not too many seem to acknowledge that the Allies were developing jet fighters also.

    Don't forget, America developed the atom bomb... if the war in Europe had continued, America had developed a trump card. In hindsight, there is absolutely zero chance of the Nazis ever winning no matter what strategy they tried.

    I think we can all agree that a CISSP certificate holder is just as incompetent and useless at $16,000.00 per year as they are at $160,000.00 per year.

    The CISSP certification does not grant intelligence. It demonstrates that you are familiar with certain concepts, not that you can string them together intelligently.

    Holding a CISSP is not a sign of incompetence; although I have met many CISSP holders who were utterly and completely and contemptibly incompetent.

    As for android... that's not really an android vs ios thing, that Apple vs Samsung etc. There is nothing preventing a good Android manufacturer to provide patch longevity, and some phones have been well supported by some manufacturers.

    Whoah whoah whoah there cowboy. Samsung provides updates. It is the carriers who are blocking those updates. The carriers put customized "firmware" on the phones and do not use Samsung's stock firmware.

    In other words, Apple managed to strongarm the carriers but Samsung has not. Blame the carriers, not Samsung (or any other Android device manufacturer).

    Hm. Odd. I have been through Amsterdam numerous times and only once was there any kind of "issue". Some guard guy at the gate politely asked me if he could search a particular pocket on my pants. I looked at him as if he was crazy and said, "If you must.", so he did. He found nothing of course. I expect that many Americans try to bring a little "souvenir" home with them and that would catch such an instance. I was mildly annoyed and seriously insulted... but meh. It was not a very big deal. I was certainly not up against a wall with a full search being done.

    Your friend's experience is weird.

    Sure, there is a large mass of people who are essentially cows or sheep. They are neither for freedom or against freedom, they just exist. There are quite a few people who are interesting in standing up the authoritarian state because they think they will be the winners. These types would be the fundamentalists and sadists and trolls of the world... but, there is still a goodly amount of people who absolutely do care about the principles that America was founded on. Dismissing them and how deeply they care is rude and trollish. Read your comment again and pay attention to the bolded words this time:

    Twice I've put in 3 consecutive 80 hour weeks. And both times, as soon as the deadline was passed and everything signed off, I basically collapsed and slept for most of the next 2 days.

    I once worked for a year straight averaging between 100 to 120 hours a week. The 3 12 hour days each week were considered a nice break... and I was dating my future wife at the time and you know how woman are with taking up your time to prove your love. I was a mess. :/

    That will work for some Americans. For others, it is simply not an option at all. What about those people? What about the people that can choose it as an option but it steals 3 or more hours from their day? I know their time is not worth much but their time is not worthless.

    Get a roommate

    Are we talking about raising a family here or just bare single subsistence? If family, roommate will not work. If not, American society is not like it is elsewhere in the world. Finding a roommate who is trustworthy and will actually pay is VERY difficult. I recall when I was younger trying to go the roommate route. Inevitably, they would not have rent money at the end of the month because they had some other "emergency" they had to take care of. Sure, they can be kicked out but when it is the majority of them doing it, that is a LOT of months paying full rent solo along with the hassle of dealing with the assholes.

    Step back to basic cable (or even broadcast TV) and drop the unlimited data phone plan. Never seen an apartment yet that split out HVAC by unit, and it's hard to spend that much heating/cooling a 2-BR, unless you leave the doors open all winter.

    Fuck off with the holier than thou "basic cable" bullshit. In the 80s, I lived without cable and the heating bill alone was over $200, so the amount listed is not even realistic for this day and age. Electric alone in my current house is almost that much. I still do not have cable even today and my utilities/phone/internet are well over $200.

    This was the part that made me dislike you the most. You dismissed the utilities issues as if it was a pleasure issue that needed to be curbed. Meh. That attitude sucks HARD.

    If you're working 2 minimum wage jobs, you don't get the American Dream. You adjust your lifestyle. Those sacrifices will make your eventual success all the more sweet and motivate your kid(s) to rise above.

    There are a whole lot of shades of grey between the American Dream and dying of hunger on the streets. The "complaint" is that the shade of grey is getting too black to be considered humanitarian. Your dismissal of this concern deserves to be derided and insulted. I ought to throw a fuck you in there to help you wake up and see what you are not experiencing but you would likely just close your mind even tighter then.

    Yes, if you're living on the edge, then small calamities become disasters. One hopes those are the circumstances where your community (church, neighborhood, or government) pulls together and helps you through.

    You realize that this is America we are discussing right? People will stand there and watch you die and then walk on as if nothing had happened. The government? Help? ROFLMAO. Perhaps if you are female, a minority, a felon, or a child. Oops. I mean if you are a single man in America that has never been involved with the system, there are zero safety nets.     What about book publishers? What about car manufacturers? What about shoe manufacturers?

    All of those poor industries have the same exact problem! They only get the first bite and EVERYONE afterwards got to the use the product for FREE from the perspective of the manufacturer/publisher.

    Clearly, we need to put a stop to this! We simply can not have people using stuff essentially for free. Why, the poor manufacturers would go out of business and we would have no more shoes! Oh, the agony. The pain. The world must be fixed. *sigh*
