We are all responsible for our own lives even though we start at different points on the race track of existence. The question is do you believe it's worth it to help them along so that they aren't vandalizing your property? If not, there will be emotionally immature people vandalizing property. If so, there will be less people doing the vandalizing, but is it worth doing?
Put more simply, how much money are you willing to throw at the problem to make it go away?
Well if I've learned anything in this thread it's that you should posit that corrupt criminal exercises should not exist and then pat yourself on the back for not actually furthering the discussion in any way.
Come on. This is like me saying "if you had to be raped would you prefer the person be attractive or ugly" and you saying "attractive" and then me saying "AHA! Archangel Michael *WANTS* to be raped!"
People should be honest about their motivations. My belief is that faced with the choice of Donald Trump v. Barack Obama, I'd rather Obama be doing the bad thing because I think he'd be more careful about minimizing the bad in the bad thing he's doing. Give me any two people, and I'll tell you who I'd prefer. I'd prefer me doing it to Obama. I might even prefer you doing it to Obama! Probably, even!
I didn't mean you as in rickb928. I meant the you as in someone who knows what is true based on what he sees on Fox and Friends and then the NSA says "well, actually...". That means the NSA actually does negative work because they aren't confirming the pre-existing biases of that person.
Like most things, the money we spend on them is directly proportional to the importance we place on them. Notwithstanding your complaints about the mission change, if you think that what the NSA does is not important because, for example, what you know is true and the NSA contradicts it, then it makes sense that you are not concerned with losing experienced people. They do not contribute anything in that case.
This is why in most states the highest paid state employee is a college sports coach. We attach enormous importance as a society to sports and having our publicly-funded teams perform well -- much more so than retaining good police officers or teachers or other state-employed people.
My credit union requires a $5 minimum balance to open an account. There are no account maintenance fees on that.
If you don't have a bank account, you're an idiot and have no leg to stand on. If you don't want to use a bank for privacy reasons or any others, so be it. But "I can't afford a bank account" is not a valid argument.
Indeed! When a country's currency crashes you often see people informally using other more stable currencies to do business. A popular one is the US Dollar, specifically because it doesn't undergo wild fluctuations in value.
There are literally people commuting through Lake county where I live to get from where they live in Mendocino county to where they work in Napa county, or even the hind end of Sonoma, and that was true even before the fires up here.
I've never understood that.
My commute is 5 minutes each way, and I'd rather it be faster. I mean I'm from Ohio so I've never had to choose to move out of state, but if I had to commute that far for a job I'd just move to somewhere where I wouldn't have to.
I've never been to California (except a layover at LAX), and I hear it's nice, but there's no way it's that nice.
Well, like anything maybe he doesn't put a lot of value in drinking good coffee. I don't like coffee so I don't drink it. I'm even saving more than the $0.18 he purportedly saves!
I think people should spend money in proportion to what they find important. My wife sent me out for nutmeg the other day. I bought the cheapest nutmeg I could find. When I look for a keyboard, I want a premium keyboard. If you want premium coffee and are willing to pay that premium, that's fine with me. I think it's a useless extravagance, but maybe you might think my keyboard is the same.
We ration care too. It's just by ability to pay. If I can't afford a face-lift, I don't get one. Similarly, if I can't afford my chemo treatment, I don't get it either.
I completely understand why someone would want to use cash and encourage them to do so if they so wish. I just think the convenience factor of using plastic is worth the tradeoff.
It's inherently deflationary.
Bitcoin has flourished as an investment (albeit a very risky one). It has utterly failed as a medium of exchange.
However the market can stay irrational longer than he can stay solvent.

Because we get all the breaks. Let this one slide.

It's easier for accounting. Nothing more.

I don't think it's ok either way, but if it absolutely had to happen, I'd rather Obama be doing it rather than Trump. YMMV, of course.
I don't think there's anything wrong with this belief one way or the other. We just have to be honest about it.

Bitcoin isn't, or rather has completely failed as a currency.

I know the global economy would be much more efficient if the money I was paid last week appreciated in value by 30%.
Bitcoin works as an investment. It utterly sucks as a currency.

No doubt. How many of us turn on Folding@Home or maybe SETI@Home once it gets cold? I've been doing that for years.
Nope. They don't refund the taxes that go to pave roads they don't drive on either.

If they are my employer, it will be deferred until it's urgent.
I do think about it. No, I don't care.

Man this site has gone downhill over the years, hasn't it?
Which is all the PHBs care about. Security has always been "someone else's problem" and performance is something you can just throw more hardware at.
It helps because blockchain crypto decentralized cyberpunk. That's why. Blockchain!
