Sheesh.... why every time there is a NASA/LHC (circle the appropriate) story there is always someone who yells: "forget space, forget LHC, forget any difficult research (circle the appropriate) and think of children/poor/3rd world nations (circle the appropriate)
How many times does it have to be repeated...."you never know what kind of benefits this research may bring! It needs to be diverse!"
AFAIK the process takes a very long time and would be very gradual and although it may begin soon it would take a long time and allow for everything to adjust, if required.
However, one can never be really sure... any data on effects of previous switches?
Agreed. Few facts:
First virus discovered - 1899; Tobacco Mosaic Virus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virus
First electron microscopes to observe virions: 1930's (same source).
Hence it is entirely possible that HIV related deaths simply went unnoticed, plus the possibility that it was largely confined to the areas where humans had been in contact with apes and thus could become infected with the virus that was able to jump species (which would be a very rare event on its own anyway)
It is just like in the "old days" when the clocks were made by artisan-watchmakers and could be afforded by only the elite few. Something akin to Nuremberg eggs from the 16th century. http://www.love-watches.com/Invention-Watch.htm
Yeah, but it can still be considered "a" success of sorts. According to this short article http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn14699 the LHC has worked better than expected so far. It can be safely assumed that it is not a trivial task for everything to work perfectly on the 27km track cooled to 1.9K.
Oh dear, are you actually suggesting that USA is pumping an extremely corrosive and toxic element into the atmosphere on purpose instead of all the usual pollutants we all know an cherish?
Finally, my dreams of living like an elf in the aerial city between huge trees is coming closer to the reality. Next item on the agenda; immortality (i know people are working on that as well).
I'm not sure how this is related to their ability to create quality death metal bands like Amorphis, Demigod, Abhorrence, Demilich, Belial and Sentenced. However, all of Scandinavia is a death metal powerhouse, so it may be "cultural."
I have heard that the large popularity of the death metal in a region is a symptom of a "depressive" culture (along the huge alcohol consumption) brought by the little exposure to the Sun during the year - Winter Blues?
Can anyone comment?
Just wanted to add my voice to everyone else who thinks that this section has no place on this site... Editors (and any corporations who may be behind it), please reconsider before this site ends up like Digg et al. and starts spiraling towards the "OMG LOLZ!!!!11" mentality.
P.S. It was so much fun reading this extremely long and engaging article containing *gasp* two emails.
I never implied that. However, economy can provide incentives for research into more efficient use, recycling and down the line substitute materials and technologies.
Both sides should get a grip! While it is clear that economy does not magically conjure materials in demand it is merely a human made factor that creates incentives for use of not so easy to extract sources of the materials as well as research into possible alternative. TRue it is a human invention but so what, it works.
Well, that is in fact what is happening. (This has been shown by other studies). Aggregation of ~5000 Gag proteins leads to HIV virion budding. However due to the resolution limits of the light microscope (at least the setup used here), this is not seen.
While I applaud the work, I am not entirely convinced that this article is "Nature" worthy. True enough, it shows something that has not been directly observed before, but does it describe a phenomenon that is entirely novel? This data merely confirms what has been known about HIV assembly, while enabling to observe kinetics.
Maybe, I am wrong, but I would like to see a bit more data in this article. I suspect this might be one of these cases of "publish this before anyone else does" and then follow with many derivative articles.
Because it feels like picking your nose while wearing a latex glove....?
I will take that $400k now, thanks.
To introduce this system into Warhammer and make Mythic listen.
... now cue the flames.
If "Sins of Solar Empire" can do it, so can the others...
With your attitude may as well just crawl under the white sheet, curl up and wait for the beating.
What if, after all this huge amount of work, scientists will discover that they have sucessfully developed Artificial Stupidity instead?
I think this question was once posed by Stanislaw Lem (sorry no source)

Why do people insist on making electric cars futuristic as hell?
There. Fixed that for you.

For the last time, we did NOT evolve from monkeys!!!
Monkeys and humans share the same ancestor - thats all.

Havent MS tried to push something like that before already (via WGA)? - just changing the annoyance that comes when pirated Windows is detected?

Always great to see that humans can do something other than destroy!

Crackers do not fall for this trap. It is an obvious attempt to spread the Snow Crash!
I am using an Adblock, you insensitive clod!
