Yeah. Democrats against voting fraud -- but for heaven's sake, don't require voters to show a picture id. Change your stance on that, then we'll take the rest of your argument seriously.

    >And one thing I think everyone here can agree with, is that we definitely need to go in a different direction >than we've been going in the last seven years. If you don't believe that, I suggest you go take a look at your >last few statements from your 401k.

If you think Social Security is better, I suggest you take a look at the financial direction that it is taking, and ask whether we want to keep depending on that for the next 30 years.

    >One of the two political parties in this country is absolutely hell-bent on the destruction of our government >(by their own admission).

Smaller government != no government. But I suppose you already knew that. The government has been smaller (in terms of spending as a percentage of GDP, and in terms of amount of laws) for, roughly, the entire 225 years it has been in existence prior to now. And, hey, we're still here, so it can't be all bad.

    >Most of all, I'm just tired of having to apologize to all my friends from overseas for having a dumb fuck in >the White House.

And this gets modded +5 "insightful". There's an insightful comment for you.

You should feel silly, for making such a joke of a comment. You pre-emptively call anyone who disagrees with you a troll, yet your post is full of completely unsupported assertions about Palin's supposed inability to make independent decisions. If her background says anything, it is that she does not just do what she is told.

I agree, people should watch the speeches and get the quotations in context. If they do, they will find that Wright is every bit as racist and paranoid as people have made him out to be. You can pretend that it sounds reasonable in some "context," but just because Wright claims he is preaching from the Bible doesn't make his words any less offensive.

  5. Where's the outrage? on California Utilities to Control Thermostats? · · Score: 1

I can't believe so many people on Slashdot are okay with this. Are these the same people who cry every time the government wants to expand its surveillance powers? That is something that will, in all probability, not affect anyone -- a bad precedent, but of no immediate import. And yet when the government wants to come in and change the temperature in your house, it's no big deal.

I always use keywords, since I know that's all it's using anyway. That's why it drives me nuts on Microsoft Office when I type in some keywords and it asks for a complete sentence. Why?? I want to ask. Does it have some super-advanced way to figure out what I mean, or is it just going to pick out the keywords anyway?

I've been dreading this for years: U.S. money comes to look like monopoly money. I really value the standard size and color. (And I don't see where color changes would help the blind, or the color-blind, for that matter.) If they have to make a change, I hope they do it in the form of adding texture (Braille?) or, if absolutely necessary, changing the length only, as the Australian posters have suggested. I definitely do not want a mess of different-sized bills to go through when sorting money.

What I can't understand about Sarbox is this: some CEOs and CFOs commit fraud, therefore a peon like me has to jump through a lot of extra hoops to do his job. Huh? I am in *no* position to embezzle money or otherwise ruin the company. The law should be concerned with high-level controls, but instead it reaches down into the lowest levels of a company. That's why the implementation costs are exhorbitant compared to the benefits.

Yikes! I had no idea my review would stir up so much controversy. I don't want to add to the antagonism, but I would like to make a couple of points: (a) it is precisely when using a package management system that one runs into problems with different library versions. I've had a number of managed installations fail because the required library conflicts with an existing one. If there is an easy solution, wonderful! I would like nothing better than to know what it is. (b) while apt is wonderful, not everything is in apt. If you've never wanted to install a program that wasn't available in your distro's dockyard, you're lucky. (Or maybe I'm just too demanding.) (c) I'm not bashing Linux! I love Linux and I have invested many hours reading books, man pages, web sites, and experimenting with it. I would *much* prefer that my effort pay off with being able to switch 100% to Linux and ditch Windows altogether, than having simply to say, "Oh well, it was a nice idea, now back to Windows." I just wanted to point out that some things have been very difficult for me, in spite of the fact that I'm not an idiot (some of you will disagree with that judgment, I realize). I would like to push more friends and relatives into Linux, but I'm afraid to because I know they will run into some of the same problems, and I won't be able to help them. Sincerely, Derek
