Everyone is already 'a slave' to someone or something.
There is a natural order to life and the universe. Maybe you disagree to having your own mind or body used in such a way, but that is your choice. How dare you assume that what is good for you is good for everyone.
God didn't make humans to become slaves of machines.
Oh yeah, how do we know? There is temptation in many forms all around us. He could have put it there as a test!
and you mention that this might harm the human spirit. But how fragile and weak is the human spirit to begin with if it can be controlled by a machine!
That's true. But much more importantly, criminal prosecution has always been an extremely political decision. I really can't see the State of California filing suit against one of its major businesses for a fairly minor and technical criminal violation; the political cost would be too high. --Emphasis mine
I just want to point out that until it is judged by a court with the proper authority and jurisdiction, I am not so sure how someone is supposed to determine which crimes are minor and should be allowed to slip through the cracks.
You're honor, I only stole 1000 bucks from Bill Gates. He's a gabillionaire. It's all pretty minor, if you think about it. I mean, technically, I only stole 0.00001% of what he has. Can't we just round that off and call it 0?
Some days the slippery slope just keeps getting slipperier...
at least you may get to see them, because they'll probably make you go get them, hand write special cards, wear goofy costume and hand them out to everyone while whistling the company theme song. Then you'll get to do everyone else's work while they play with their nano's.
we'd have more than one life, I would be in violation of nintendo's patent on insanity, and I'd find a BFG and blast the hell out of whoever is letting these patents through.
So what exactly does one have to do to get a patent Denied? - forget to tape the bribe to the back?
I'm glad that there is a way to go through your 40,000 mp3's on an lcd screen. But isn't the idea of sorting a non-patentable item. Maybe the algorithm is, but who cares about that?
Leisure suit larry: magna cum laude - for xbox has a screen effect for drunkenness.
And as long as we're talking about it, Toe Jam and Earl has one for getting hit by cupid's arrow. It makes it so the direction that you press for forward may not be forward anymore and you have to dynamically adjust.
But if we keep listing all these things, I don't think it would be fair to patent a type of emotional or mental state. Or even effects that help you feel that way.
finally, if they do get these kind of patents, then they should be held responsible if someone goes insane from their game, or falls in love or gets drunk. Because the game created an emotional or mental state in the person, and that patent owner did it on purpose.
If they had insurance, maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal. Wouldn't that be a cool feature? For say $3 more per month, we'll track your stuff in a database and if something ever happens, we can get it back for you...
Maybe that feature should even be built-in already? duh!
So what about book stores,
they let you read books in the store. They want to be friendly with the customers that enjoy books.
Sure, sit down, have some coffee. Read up on all the things that you want. But if you want the convience of reading at home, then you need to buy the book.
I don't think that its a horrible idea that google be able to scan every line and have it stored, but I do think that they should have to put up a bond and be audited to make sure that people aren't being kept from actually purchasing the book.
Please pay me a licensing fee for the idea that I just patented: a method for revenue generation whereby the company solicits licensing fees for patents that were obtained by randomly generating words.
Public funded research is supposed to be stuff that will benefit our society as a whole. The people who have the say on what gets funded are the groups that review the government grant proposals. These are people who are really knowledgeable about the various topics, usually with Ph.D's and other great credentials.
Why anyone thinks that they should be able to tell other people how to live, in what manner that they can procreate, and when to decide to have or not have a child, is really beyond me. Now if someone asks your opinion, you are free to give it. But part of the reason why our country gives us so many freedoms is because that freedom is an important part of our society. We are free to make our own choices and our own mistakes. So people might not agree with the ideology, but it is they who have the problem. Otherwise, their freedom to express their opinion should be taken away!
I wish people had the insight to see that public funded research is one of the main ways to make sure that the research is done right!
If the megacorps do all the research, then they get all the benefits and the profit. They are not going to just give out cures or information or anything.
Unfortunately, the people reading here are not the ones we have to worry about or convince.
Isn't the exchange between a journalist and a possible source go something like this...
Journalist: I heard you might now something about xyz?
Source: Maybe who wants to know?
J: Our readers for starters... I can protect your identity.
Source: well, I might get in trouble, but if you can protect my identity, ok.
The people giving away info are depending on the journalist not giving away their identity. So, even though we might not agree on why they are doing it, they made a committment to not reveal their source, and I believe that they should do everything in their power to protect it.
Thats how that stuff works. Now journalism ethics probably says that the journalist shouldn't ask someone to tell stuff that they shouldn't being telling.
If we can get nice powerful nuclear engines like these, maybe we should start building them in space, just to have them there. Then when we get one of those big comet things, or we get an email invite to mars from the martians, we are ready. I mean, people keep saying, lets go to mars. Others say, we aren't ready. Well, lets prepare for the day when we are ready!
then when people say we aren't ready, we can go over the checklist:
do we have a way to get there? (check, engine)
do we have a way to come back? (check, engine with scram for fuel reload)
are we physcologically ready?
enough food?
etc, etc, etc....
these ideas are great, I'm not scared that people are having them. I would be scared if they stopped!!!
a lot of people here are gonna be stuck on step 1 for a LONG time!!
haven't you heard of the law of conservation of parking spaces?
Clowned Cows?
You've just be clowned - *honk* *honk*
sure they can. its easy!
while (true) { int counter = 1; if(counter <= 95){ block(); } else { allow(); } if(counter = 100){ counter = 1; } }

You're crazy!
Does this mean that Dark Energy is equal to dark matter times the speed of dark squared?
Translation: I am so lame that I can't even come up with a joke, but there has got to be at least one.
Spinal Tap: Most people charge $10 for 10 songs, but our store here charges $11.
Interviewer: But won't less people buy them, effectively lowering your profits?
Spinal Tap: But we're charging $11, they only charge $10
have fun!

instead of modding the comment, I wish I could mod the sig. Your sig literally made me laugh out loud. thanks, hackronym0

1. Make website that touts your ability to prevent piracy.
2. require a copy of 'copyrighted material' for ability to detect it
3. flood p2p with fake hashes
4. laugh all the way to the bank as you just got paid to accept tons of copyrighted materials.
I love this world!
