  1. So what? on Portable Wi-Fi Hotspots · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Having done some work in both NYC and Wash. D.C., this is not new- I could connect through unsecured wifi nodes throughout both cities while in a cab with my laptop, wireless PCMIA card (not specialized hardware or software) seamlessly two years ago. (pardon the grammatical structure- no, I could not connect from D.C. and NYC at same time!-get real you nitpickers!)

    What's really new here?

"If we don't act now, school shootings will continue to rise, the violent murders will continue to increase, and our children will continue to live shorter and shorter lives in this terrible and violent world."

You forgot the part about banning school could stop this from happening, I mean after all, if they don't get these "ideas", then it can't happen, right?

I'm also in favor of non violent book burnings, gov't controlled speech (after all, if you want free speech, you MUST be against gov't., right?), and non-violent revolution to obtain world peace, and as to the problem of school shootings, maybe we should institute a policy of handing out machineguns and grenade launchers to the hall monitors/faculty in schools- that would cut down on school related violence/shootings! (apply sarcasm filter heavily!)

Unfortunatly, my "utopia" cannot come to pass in this present day, as this would further decrease Hollywood's revenue stream, and would negate centuries of writings and decades of movies, not to mention the fact of millenia of legends and folk hero myths.
Blank the past/present out totally and embrace the new future where all is politically correct and easy to swallow by the masses and push it to their subconcious as being the "good/lawbiding people" by all media (newspapers and TV) and we will be fine. (sarcasm filter should be applied here!)

No worries, we are progressing at the proper pace:(

I don't know how much "jest" it will take to erase all of the questions I have, but don't really want answered!

To explain that, I had a contract job in Provo, and we stayed in the suburbs of Salt Lake City at a motel (hotel?-don't remember) and I still can't get past the brochure in the room we stayed at BRAGGING about SLC (Salt Lake City) being settled by 167 men, 8 women, 23 (I think it was 23- could be wrong, but I'm sure about the 167 men and 8 women), and mention of livestock that settled SLC. How did they come up with men having so many wives? How did that work with 167 men and 8 women- time shares? WTF??!!??

Go ahead and mod me "off topic" and "flamebait"- my karma can stand it, but how can this *inbred* culture have anything mainstream to say to the rest of the USA that has any relevance?

Apologies to those that had no choice in their birth, but that brochure still *scares* me when I actually think about it!

BTW, the whole work experience there was like working in a foreign country that happened to use English as the "national language", and yes, I have worked in many diff countries- Utah was no big difference than those countries except for transportation issues (no customs to go through).

I wish I could remember the exact motel/hotel we stayed at so I could document the specific brochure, but maybe someone has ran across this and can provide relevant links or sources. (My visit was in the late '90's...97-98 I think)

Scary state, considering it is part of the USA.

    "No. Budget means saving money."
    Good point.
What I'm wondering though, how much overall cost diff is there when you "save" $100.00 (US) on cost of monitor with CRT, compared to the $ spent powering CRT vs. LCD over the expected life of both- I have all CRT's on my home network, with all PC's set to power down the CRT's after 10 minutes of inactivity- How big is the diff in $electricity savings between 4 LCD's compared to 4 CRT's over the expected life of the monitors?
I honestly don't know- I am truly asking.
It seems that if the CRT's are off, the energy requirements should not be too high.
Where is a good source to find the answers? ( I would really like to know)
Personally, I can't afford to switch to all LCD's here (4 PC's on home net), but maybe I should be looking to phase out the CRT's sooner than I wanted to- You are absolutely right about budget means saving money! (initial cost + operational/maint. costs over expected life HAVE to be factored in!)

Currently, I have not *noticed* a jump in my electric bill, but to be honest, I have not really paid that much attention to it (in other words, nothing has jumped up and ripped my face off!), but maybe I need to look closer.

Don't take it so hard...you had a valid point, but just let your frustrations color your post- a natural reaction. :)
One thing to remember is that this "coloring" of history has happened since the beginnings of recorded history, no matter which culture/nation espouses it.

To counteract this, we should embrace ALL information available about whichever subject is "on topic"- the more info availabl, the better our chances to find the "truth".
It reminds me of what my maternal grandfather used to try and pound through my thick skull:
There are three sides to every story....
    1. my version
    2. your version
    3. what actually happened

That reminder has stuck with me, and has "saved the day" for me many times.

Keep an open mind, but also, don't be easily swayed until you get a chance to do some of your own research- it can be enlightening! :)

BTW, I respect your sense of honor and courage for your admitting you may have been hasty or wrong, that is a diminishing trait nowdays it seems! :)

No sarcasm is meant nor implied here- honestly, my hat's off to you! :)

For what it's worth, I'm an American, but I also know better than to believe WE have the only version of "correct history"- I know it is tainted by our perspective, but also know opposing views are from opposing perspectives, so somewhere in the middle usually gets me more useful info on any subject.

    Just my thoughts, and... Cheers!

There has been much research that seems to point out big diff's between how men and women think and "process" information.

The research seems to point out that (in verbal communication) men have a tendency to focus more on actual content and "verify" what they heard with body language, where women seem to place percieved tone of conversation as a much higher "verification index" than men do.

I would like to see a much better study done than was presented in TFA, addressing the role gender may play.

I have seen the same reaction in my own household with emails that you described, so it makes me wonder.......
