The software involved is not made by Google but rather a third-party. Presumably the search will dump the barcode info into whatever search engine that was programmed in. Considering the sheer number of programs duplicated for the iPhone (and that requires a $99 entrance fee), I imagine it won't be long before you can search with whatever engine you can think of. And then someone will add a plugin interface to one of those clones, which will allow usage with the remaining engines you haven't thought of.

    Again:

    1) Apple claims in its ads that 'all parts of the internet are on the iPhone'.
    2) The iPhone cannot display Flash or Java
    3) Flash objects and Java applets are parts of the internet
    4) From 2 and 3, we conclude that the iPhone does not, in fact, have 'all parts of the internet'.
    5) Therefore, in some sense, the ad is not true; UK ASA decides to pull the ad on that basis.

This has nothing to do with sites that want to cater to iPhone users, or other phone manufacturers. Palm, with their crappy browsers Blazer or Pocket IE, does not advertise its phones as having 'all parts of the internet' so nobody complains about their ads. In fact, the complaint NOW isn't even about the iPhone itself. The problem is the AD about the iPhone.

It is Apple who claimed in their ad that they have 'all parts of the internet' when it isn't the case; that is the problem.

You're still missing the point. I get alone fine without Flash, but other people want to use Hulu, non-YouTube Flash video sites, etc. Apple claims 'all parts of the internet are on the iPhone'. If a web site on the internet has Flash, that part will not be accessible on the iPhone. Therefore, THAT part of the internet is not on the iPhone. Then, it is shown that not ALL parts of the internet are on the iPhone.

This entire tiff is pretty easy to settle: DON'T CLAIM TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE ENTIRE INTERNET IN YOUR ADS. Done.

Really? Then I guess you have no problems with the Big Bang THEORY then. Because that's what it IS, a theory. Now, there are theories that are more likely than others. And when a theory has stood up to challenges for a long time, sometimes scientists will slip and consider it as a fact. But if you nudge them a bit, they will remember that it is a theory. What bothers me is that many religious folks think Science is trying to take over the What, How, and Why. It isn't. What's wrong with God starting the Big Bang? What if that was what "Let there be light!" meant?

If you're going to make extensions and interpretations like that, then this discussion was over before it began, since people can find a way to extend and interpret anything they like. With the trackpoint, *applying a certain amount of pressure* for a certain amount of time will move the cursor a certain distance on the screen. People who can (and prefer to) deal with that like the trackpoint better. I just prefer not having to moving my fingers a bit, lift them from the trackpad, and then move them again as necessary. The only irritating thing about trackpoints (to me) is how the trackpoint tips wear out.

Despite what some of my detractors may have said, I have found that it IS possible to touch the screen on an iPhone too lightly. Oh, sure, the phone could have been lagging every single time I touched it really lightly. Doubt it though.

With the 800w, the resistive touchscreen is just flexible enough that I can feel the give when I tap on something. The touchscreen of the Fujitsu has palm-rejection technology (for inking with), so I end up having to use a fingernail when I use my fingers on the screen. The fingernail itself flexes a little bit, providing the feedback I need.

Yes the keys on most physical thumbboards are smaller than the iPhone virtual thumbboard (usually in the vertical axis). The difference? On thumbboards like the Treos, they're slightly rounded, so you can feel the separate keys. Even if your thumb covers up three keys (as mine does all the time), you can figure out which direction to nudge your thumb to activate a particular key.
