    see now that is funny, you need 14 servers for your 3500 users for notes and you actually think that is good. That is an appalling ratio. our organisation has 55,000 employees spread around the world and 30 exchange servers spread across 3 sites. think about it, you are handling less than 350 users a server for MAIL.

    So you say better to hide the fact it is less functional? far better this way as at least the user knows what they are getting rather than being tricked by something like Windows XP 2 or XP Second Edition. funny how people don't like straight out honesty when it might dissaude users.

    and he was right, what they have done is merely cripple the media libraries, which hurts more than just media player, not even OEM's will want this version as it can only lead to user dissatisfaction when a 3rd party app breaks because the media libraries are gone.

    This post tends you either don't have much AD skills or work in a place that has no idea. AD is one of the better technologies MS has implemented. It centralises management and simplifies policy and software administration. However if you don't know what your doing then it is a great way to get yourself into a mess. When properly configured it kicks ass over anything in the market.

    banning bridging to the internet doesn't mean you can't connect to the internet. all internal machines have full internet access (protected by ISA of course). bridging to the internet means you can't create your own tunnels to internet based machines and hence bridging external machines to give them corpnet access.

    of course they have an influence on MS's corporate strategy, So does Sun and IBM. In fact I would think IBM is more of a concern than linux persee. By your reasoning MS has a huge influence on linux as much of what is done is done specifically to displace them and hence Billy should rank first by that reasoning.

    That is an absolute bullshit reason to rank him as most influential. not bagging Linus, but what utter crap, you may as well say Bill Gates as what he has done has influenced what roads linux goes or Mcnealy as his actions change how MS and Linux compete. To claim someone as the most influential for there effect on competitors is crap.

    Halo 2 is a lot more than just some new levels. The multi player side of it kicks ass and so do some of the new features like dual wielding and better vehicles. having said that HL2 is also awesome. it comes down to what you prefer, an excellent multiplayer game in halo 2 or the more challenging and visually appealing (if your machine has the grunt) HL2

    Yes most of the movies are crap. The Poles broke it long before the brits were even aware it had been done. Then just before Germany invaded the poles met the brits in a cabin in the woods and had the machines they created smuggled into england where Turing and dozens of others worked to improve the speed with a better machine.

    If you are running a 2000+ workstation environment that isn't already locked down then your pretty well screwed already as whether it is windows or linux users WILL install whatever they like regardless of policy. In a properly run IT department this isn't a big problem. The simple answer is NO, if it isn't approved and tested. If they claim it is needed they have to provide business case and cost justification for testing which stops most garbage getting approved. It is a rigid regime but it works.

    True for himself, but he was suggesting installing it for others and the costs being cheap there. When you start doing that then you are normally setting it up as they are not able to do it themselves hence the TCO really kicks in heavily as everytime they need help they usuaully have to pay. For him knowing the OS then it probably did save him $3000, but for someone else it could cost them $10,000 more or vice versa, many people try to claim TCO as FUD but it is one of the essential costing tools of doing business.

    high rise in revenue? more likely a massive jump in costs, someone has to write, customise and support those hardware linux distributions, you think that comes free? hardware manufacturers do not have the skills nor the desire to enter the OS arena, vendor neutral is where the highest profits are.

    lets see, a $3100 head start, so that amounts to a couple of days of professional support if something goes wrong. The point of TCO is a head start usually means very little as most systems (including linux) require constant maintenance, maintenance is expensive and ends up being the majority of the cost of a system. Even when purchase the massive sun boxes the hardware and software in the logn run is the small part of the cost and any company that evaluates costs as an up front thing doesn't understand TCO.

    not really, from an enterprise view redhat is actually the more expensive option. Don;t forget when your an enterprise you want the support and wheny ou package that in with Redhat you actually end up with a very expensive deal. Makes it relatively easy for most people to compete against them.

But as everyone knows you don't use beta in production I will immediately stop recommending mozilla. can't have it both ways, it is either beta and no one should be using it for production purposes or people should be using it and it deserves its critism and needs the word beta removed.

    to think Lotus and Wordperfect drove the success is misguided at best. As the parent poster suggested it was MSDOS and its ease of use and simple design that allowed programs like Lotus and wordperfect to work. but the real driver is and always has been the mass of games that came with the advent of DOS. even now it is what makes windows so huge.

If it was because of the business deal he lost to Bill with IBM then we should be thankfull that such weak minded person didn't get to where bill is today as I am sure someone who kills themselves over there own mistakes and envy of others isn't someone anybody should ever want to have that sort of power. (PS: I thought he died in a bar brawl not suicide?)

    Personally I don't think anyone can rightfully blame Bill for Gary Kildall and quite frankly if Bill is the reason then we should be thankfull. After all a guy who is so envious and jealous of a business opportunity HE let slip that he turns his life to shit and ultimatily dies, well who knows what kind of fucked up corporation that sort of person would create, surely one many times more twisted than MS could ever be.
