So your schools IT people finally realised they are being locked into a vendor that is only interested in their money. So the solution, Lets go and get locked into another vendor that wants our information so they can sell it. So many choices were available to them and instead of choosing not to be beaten by sticks they choose a different colour stick.
They AREN'T patching the OS, they are providing malware updates only. At best it is a bandaid for anyone dumb enough to still be reliant on such an ancient OS with no support and still using it for web access. It may reduce the damage some of these people do to the rest of us by at least alerting them that they are being dumb.
I tried to do the math on this too. First of all, I'm not sure if the number is 20,000 USD or CAD (Since OpenBSD is based in Canada not the US). Next up is the fact that many of the machines are older non x86 machines that are not power efficient. For example when the SGI/AlphaStations/VAX/SparcStations were produced, focus was on MHz not power utilization. Finally, I think the project might use some type of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) as well as network switches, etc.
So by your math you're looking at CAD 20,000 = EUR 13,500 which at EUR 0.20 per kWh would buy you 67500 kWh = 7.7 kWh.
Now the project has supports about 20 architectures. And there are dedicated machines used to build the base system and dedicated machines used to build ports so at least 2 of each machine. On top of that there's probably an NFS server to host the source code, some UPS, network switches, etc, etc. So say about 50 machines total.
So 7.7kWh / 50 machines gets you to 154 watts per machine. I do believe they are on 24x7 as there are daily builds for many architectures, etc, etc. 150 watts is not unreasonable power consumption in my opinion.
Not only is 150 watts not unreasonable, it is actually far better than I would expect. average server draw for some of the older stuff I would expect to be double that. People don't seem to realise how quickly power consumption adds up when you need to run a whole bunch of computers, switches and UPS to support them and most likely some cooling on top of that.
$20k isn't even the cost of a single developer to maintain it. They are far better of paying the $20k to keep the lights on then commiting to supporting a developer to maintain OpenSSH. less money commitment for a company that is struggling so badly.
Personally I think the appalling beta is a ruse to make you think the current/. is actually good as anything next to that pile of poo looks exceptional.
$120k? for skilled Engineers and attorneys? pigs arse. someone is either lying to you or you live in some tiny town with demand for neither. $120k may top out average or below average people but that number won't even get the skilled ones to even apply in most places.
Bacon is not like Apples or Oranges or even other cuts of meat. It doesn't just require a good quality source product (i.e. the pig), the quality vastly varies by the processes used for curing. So you are not just affected by the cheap quality meat when purchasing from supermarket, you are doubly impacted by their cheap rapid processing and poor quality curing to allow them to get it in the stores as fast as possible. This creates far greater difference between what you get from a good butcher and a poor butcher/supermarket. If you want to make food comparions you are better of comparing the differences between prepared foods rather than raw products.
In other news, cloning is fun to know how to do, but totally worthless because it has no valid applications.
No valid applications?
Consistent repeatable results in medical testing? eliminates genetic variables which can and do affect results
producing foods with consistent desirable properties, not sure you have noticed but a good portion of the world is poor and or starving..
cloning is also excellent research towards the ability to clone body parts for transplants to reduce complications and rejection.
I am sure there are many many other highly valuable uses for cloning, just because you are too warped to think of anything but sex slaves doesn't mean the rest of us are as twisted as you.
traditional smoked bacon from a good butcher is with out a doubt one of the most flavourful cuts of meat available (at least in my opinion). You are probably buying your bacon from a supermarket or cheap butcher.
Geez they finally do the right thing after people yelled and screamed at how badly they fucked up and make it offline capable and you beg for it to be tied back into an online DRM system. Why for gods sake?
If it truly is a proper offline mode then I will buy it. I really really wanted SimCity as it is something I play in airports and while travelling to pass the time. The online only mode while I could have still enjoyed it in a more limited use scenario, I refused to buy it as I don't want them to think this sort of shit is ok.
why the fuck do you care? it is his money, his life. If he wants to have a large house why shouldn't he? Who the fuck are you to decide what people do with their money?
How is a prepaid card better in any way? You have moved the liability from the credit card company to yourself. If your card gets stolen and used before you can stop it tjem it is YOUR money that is lost. In the case of a credit card the liability stays with the credit card company and at most you may be inconvenienced.. With a prepaid even if you eventually get your money back it is still YOUR money that is lost.
It is honestly great work by many dedicated people that have lead to this. I applaud them without reserve. I just think it is sad that so many poorly informed people work to undermine these great efforts.
Given the epidemic of stupid parents that refuse to immunise children nowadays it should not be long till many of the old virus's and diseases rear their ugly heads again.
So again where is the incentive to get a steambox? If you already have the old games then you have a machine that can play them, if you are after the latest and greatest games then steambox is at best a gamble.
Sony and MS are building their consoles in the millions, hence their unit costs being so low. Very hard market to break into, I don't think any individual steambox is likely to get sales in the hundreds of thousands let alone millions. secondly 1-3 years will be too late for the steambox, Valve have rolled the dice, either they succeed on the current expensive price point or they go the way of the dodo, it is very rare for consumers to give a second chance.
If all people are interested in is old games then they would be far better off with a ps3 or xbox 360, both with hundreds of games available. most can also be had for $20 or under second hand and the console will cost half that of the cheapest steambox. Chasing users that want to play old games is a quick way to an early death.
both the Ps4 and Xbox One are far too underpowered to be able to kill off PC gaming, combine that with the locked down nature of the consoles, restricted media options and PC gaming is definitely safe for at least another generation.
while I think PC gaming has more users than consoles. That number from steam is garbage. I am currently an online steam user, as is my mother and sister and none of us are playing games. Steam is set to startup with the PC for most users therefore when they are logged in they are counted as online.
You mean they are heading for the same model that Valve is currently using? If MS model is bad for consumers then so is the valve model. personally I think both models suck balls. I don't want to be locked into Valves walled garden any more than I want to be locked into Microsoft's, Apples or Googles walled gardens.
Actually the lesson should be never run a pen test against a web site you don't have permission to do against, it really is that simple, especially a government body.

The first post was a pre-emptive whine, why shouldn't it get modded down? it added nothing to the discussion.
The Ouya changed into a media player of sorts as it sucks as a gaming console.

Video cards aren't cost effective for bitcoin mining anymore.
