You know what else resolves it? Well, besides just being in an area with strong cell, doing nothing at all. Because it's a nonissue. This slashdot summary that you are posting to is a summary of the story released by experts letting us know that all cell phones have this issue, and it isn't new to iPhone 4, which means it has nothing to do with software, it's just physics. Again, there is no issue, there never was. Take a second to let that flow over you. Yes, I know what you saw, no, it doesn't mean what you thought it meant, and no your phone isn't defective. Everything is OK, it is expected, normal behavior. Really. RTFA.
Amazing, that even in the face of incontravertable science, and the mountains of evidence that all cell phones exhibit this behavior, that the fools that brought this story are still swearing their phone is defective. Even though every other cell phone has this "issue," Apple still has to answer for it. This is mass hysteria. I never thought I'd see it, but that's what it is.
Actually, Admiral Thad mulling about made the robot nervous. That guy is one toughlooking SOB. I'm waiting for him to get annoyed enough with the whole thing and just stop the leak with the butt of his tortured cigar or something.
And who is controlling the robot? This is just a blame game, the robot didn't do anything.
No way man! Robots are jerks! Remember the man in my dream? The one standing on the hill? It was a freakin robot! A stupid, boring robot!

I hope I'm not the first to call bullshit on all the reported reception problems. All these iphone owners have a single phone, and widely reported anacdotal evidence of fewer bars when you pick it up isn't fucking science and means absolutely nothing at all. Gizmodo's Jason Chen broke this non-story, and failed to do even the tiniest amount of research which would have yielded that since the inception of cell phone technology, a cell phone that is sitting perfectly still will get better reception that one you are waving around. Also, I'd like to point out that each iPhone release was plagued by false reports of reception problems. It's all bullshit. Yes, I don't doubt what you are rabidly saying, that you lose bars when you pick it up, what I'm telling you guys is that it is known and expected behavior. It's a cell phone. That's one of the things they've always done.
What I find surprising is there is not a flood of Springboard-like environments from third party devs for Mac OS X, yet. The platform is wide open right now, no one needs Apple's permission or approval to develop and distribute applications for Mac OS X, nor is Springboard likely patentable... seems odd to me no devs have made this incredibly obvious interface for Macs.
It's bleaker than you describe. There will never be artificial consciousness. Computers and their software will get better and better at fooling us into believing they are intelligent or consious, but computer science and philosophy of mind has already proven that artificial consciousness is unattainable.
As I've said multiple times in this thread, stop treating a mod like it's a feature
It's really a matter of perspective. Apple of late has this rep that with their hardware, you are locked and controlled and forced to live this ideal, efficient iLife. So while Apple and you don't see "hackability" as a feature, it has been a non-touted secret feature of technology products stretching back to at least the 70's, but was a rabidly sought after feature in 16&32-bit machines of the early 90's. Apple products themselves have a long tradition of being hackable, and there exists many a flame war out there in the annals of the Internet fighting over whether white box hw or Apple hw is more hackable. So, it really is a feature to some. I always thought the best feature of OSS, in an ideal sense, and even though I never exploited it, was hackability. So, in the other guy's opinion, I bet, OSS and iPhone have something in common... they are both hackable. You disagree. It's a mad mad world.
One of the great disappointments I've found is that Gilliam is mortal, and can only make a finite amount of films, and there is only a finite amount of time in which to enjoy them.
OK, well...(and don't get me wrong, thanks for the info, I didn't know, but) thars yer problem right thar... sack those incompetent fucks, and get some damn high def hot shot American cowboy video jockies and boom slingers to do those games up right. Obviously, it can't look like american football because the games are different, but the photographic/cinemagraphic techniques will still apply. C'mon, superior coverage will NOT hurt the game, I promise you.
You know that's not true. I wish it were, also... but harsh reality is they're doing they're best... which is in the footsteps of american broadcasters from decades ago. Even more upsetting, is probably in 16 years or so, World Cup games will start to look like last years' SuperBowl. I don't want the flashy graphics and silly animations and overthetop little jangles, necessarily.... I just want the cameras right up in their asses so I can see wtf is happening... pull back if he might pass, showing his possible pass partners available, then when he passes, get tight on the recipient.... There really IS a better way to shoot football (soccer), and it will take a lot more than 2-3 cameras.
American football, feel how you may about it, has given one thing to the world... if inadvertently... the perfection of sports photography, sports filmography, and espescially sports videography, and to an enormous extent, sports audio. Now, if you want to say the foreign Sports commentators and writers are better, I wouldn't argue, maybe make a tiny point about style and high fidelity, but really, I'd probably agree... foreign is more exciting ("GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLL!!!!!!!"), commentators unconsciously committ in ways American commentators rarely do... and it's kind of ironic. Observe: in general, stereotypical Brit is a stuffy, proper dude... kind of like an American broadcaster. But the stereotypical American is more like the British sports broadcaster, and more often than not becomes emotionally involved in the game.
The american viewership will be abysmal because the coverage is not even at the standard of american football 40 years ago. What they need is more angles, more cameras, flying cameras, cameras on players, gyroscopic camera in the ball, cameras on the fans, cameras on the refs, cameras on hot babes, cameras cameras cameras... and someone that is good at producing to throw it all together live, so the thing flows and isn't confusing.
Sure, the way they shoot your football now it's like you're actually there... in the nose bleeds on one side if the field or the other. That shit is boring. I simply don't understand how there's all that money your football games, world cup... it's so much bigger than american football most Americans aren't aware... and they can't seem to understand that only Hollywood and it's decendants are any good at television, and in particular, sports coverage... I guess my point is, when you're that rich, you don't chince on the part that will make you richer... you buy the best, and instead, the foreign football games are produced by Mr. Magoo.
Btw, not sure why they haven't been notching these frequencies out... I mean, I can't believe the first engineer (or any of the engineers since) at the first broadcast of these obnoxious and meaningless noisemakers didn't just dial them in and drop them out... seems like it'd almost be a reflex to do that, so I call WTF on inexperienced foreign broadcasters.
You can't plot the weather here on Earth more than 3 days from now accurately, but you expect us to believe you can plot the sun's weather 2 years from now?
I call BS.
Actually, even if we had enough weather sensors to surround the Earth, spaced a meter apart, and took a single reading, the predictions based off that reading would begin to diverge with the actual weather within the hour (so forget 3 days).
However, that being understood, that chaotic systems have chaos, we're still pretty sure that it's going to be darker tonight than it will be tomorrow afternoon.
I think it should be noted, even with their built in inaccuracies, due to the complexity of the system and the incompleteness of the data, computer weather modelling has gotten phenomenal (The Storm of the Century (that the right name? Blizzard of the Spring of '93) was predicted A FRIGGEN WEEK in advance, and no meteorologist believed it, so the prediction was dismissed)).
I use pi to store all my data. Rather, a complex algorithm, that I have memorized, when applied to pi , spits out all my data (school essays, hobby research, iTunes Library, family photos, home videos (mostly of cats), and a modest soft porn collection). I also have this backed up, using the same algorithm applied to the difference of pi and e, plus e.
Just in case, I think the government should dispatch a few archeologists and experts on Mayan religion and culture to determine if the Maya were aware of or could track sunspots and magnetic solar storms, solar minimum and maximum, etc.
I always assumed if the end of the long count was an accurate prediction of the end of the world, then it would have to do with the orbital period of a celestial object we haven't discovered yet, and maybe won't until it's too late, but Dec21,2012, is a little too close to the end of a long solar slumber to be completely ignored.
asking the US to view the alternative energy push as a competitive threat posed by other nations, particularly China, which may be doing a better job in bringing its engineering talent and money to bear on this problem
Undoubtedly, if the Chinese wanted to beat our pants off in clean energy, they could. But they will never never. If it's one thing we have learned about developing nations, and China, is that they'll exploit all natural resources without regard to health or environmental concerns. China, and other nations, are like the US or UK a hundred years ago. Granted, the current technical revolution is coinciding with China's own industrial revolution, and they are advancing at an insane pace (seen pictures of Beijing from the late 80's?), but like us, who really haven't moved too far in advancing alternative energies, neither will they. Even when it becomes essential to sustaining society, there will still be areas of China 50 years from now that will still be using the dirtiest, simplest method of making energy... burning something.
It's worse than you imagine. It's not 50%, but affects 100% of all cell phone users, not just iPhone 4. Apple is gonna have one hellova recall.
