  5. Missing the point - it's about culture on A Coffeeshop's Weekends Without Wi-Fi · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think a lot of people here are missing one of the main points of TFA - the interpersonal culture of the coffee shop was disappearing. Instead of being a place where people interact "live" with other human beings, it was turning into a place full of people silently hunched over their laptops. I don't think it's an unreasonable decision to turn off the wifi (at least on the weekend).

That got me thinking: someone (laptop manufacturers) should run a phone-home service, that keeps a log of the IP addresses that send in requests

There was actually an article in the Fall 2004 issue of 2600 that discussed a shell script to do something very similar. It would check in periodically to a particular web address, and execute a command contained on that web page. So if your laptop ever gets stolen, you have both a record of the thief's IP address and a means to execute commands locally. Pretty interesting.

Found this through a quick google: IRTrans. It's basically an IR transceiver with a USB interface. They say their software is Windows & Linux compatible, and open source. They have a number of different client programs available, so one might work on a mac. I found this site through a site for some software called iRed, which is a Mac program that can interface with this device, but alas, it isn't free. Good luck!

While it's good to have all-in-one gadgets, there are things that just can't be integrated.

I have been using my Nokia 3650 as a portable video player for a while now, and I love it. The problem is, I can only fit a certain amount of pre-recorded video on the memory card. It would be great to get real-time news or other entertainment while sitting on the bus or the train.

The great thing about multi-function cell phones is that their purchase price is subsidized by the carrier. I understand that I'm paying for part of this in my monthly service charge, but I'm paying the same service charge whether I use a whiz-bang phone or a 10 pound brick. Why not let the carrier pay for part of my toys?

  13. Tim Burton has lost it on War of the Worlds, Chocolate Factory Trailers · · Score: 5, Insightful

Does anyone remember Planet of the Apes? The original is a classic, and Burton's remake was one of the most memorable stinkers in recent movie history. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic film, even if it doesn't hew very closely to the book, and I fear that a Burton remake will be Planet of the Apes all over again. Please, Tim Burton, leave my childhood alone.

Did anyone else notice that both posted articles have very similar text?

From drive.com.au: It's more than five metres long, is shaped like a bullet and carries its batteries, software and motors in a narrow chassis bed, giving it a low centre of gravity... The mind-boggling acceleration is similar to a 370kW racing car, the only difference being that without a transmission there is no gearshift shock and the linear acceleration pushes the driver back in the seat.

From autoexpress.co.uk: It's more than five metres long, shaped like a bullet and carries its batteries, software and motors in a narrow chassis bed, giving it the lowest centre of gravity of any prototype we've come across... The mind-boggling acceleration was on a par with that of a 500bhp GT racing car. Yet the lack of a transmission meant there were no jerky cog swaps as we were thrust back in our seat by an incredible 0.8Gs.

So did one site copy from the other, or (more likely), did they both just copy text from a press release? Did the poster actually read both articles before this was posted?

We are in a first world country with a decent infrastructure and it is extremely unlikely that we will have mass powercuts.

Are you kidding? I'm not too sure about the UK, but where I live (US), rolling blackouts and brownouts are not totally uncommon in the summer, when electricity consumption is at its highest. Even if your distribution infrastructure is the best in the world, it's no help if you're not generating enough power in the first place. Line problems are not that uncommon either - I live in the middle of the most densely populated state in the country, and our power was out for almost week a few years ago while we waited for repairs to the lines after a storm.
