Exactly. I am finishing my PhD in about a month. A few years ago, I have actually repaid my home country about 80k of my scholarship so far, so I could stay in the US.
Now that I am done, I am looking for a Job but I need to get a work permit that is almost impossible, especially with the cuts on research funding. So, although I want to stay, own a house, have an American born son and a husband with an H1B, I will have the choice of: staying at home on an H4 that does not allow me to work, go back or just do consultancy outside the US. Did I heard China is hiring?
Phineas and Ferb proves that you can make it clever enough for both kids and adults. It is brilliant and sometimes I watch it even without my 3 year old. I guess it is the perfect geek cartoon, with all the necessary references.
All in all, Disney/Pixar movies are usually clever enough that I won't get bored watching. And after having to see Cars about a 100 times, that says a lot. But it is so rich in details, that every time (well, maybe in the first 10 times) you will find something you haven't noticed before.
No you are not. I am resisting, but I think in the end I will have to see it just to be able to rant about it. If they had spent some of the 150 mi they did for publicity to improve the plot (as everybody seems to agree that sucks), I would be more willing to see it. Yes, I get the argument: "But the technology is amazing".
Fine, but maybe I should wait for a better writer to make better use of that technology and come up with a decent story. Or is that too much to ask?
In the end, maybe it is a good combination: The mellow story is there so a guy can convince his girlfriend to go with him. In this case, maybe he needs to get a better girlfriend.
I agree about the headline. It seems like we had a lot of these on/. lately.
Misleading, attention grabber headlines. Oh, well, better turn on my TV and go watch some FOX news. At least the stories are as misleading as the headlines, so I won't be disappointed.
Even if income were the only consideration...
The mean annual incomes is not a very good comparison, because you need to consider the actual chances of getting a job in the field. His point was: how many athletes can actually make a living from the sport only? And do you really think your kid is one of them?
I first learned about the leak on CNN. They may have not showed the text on TV (I did not look on their site for it), but they sure talked about some of the contents and now I know that if I have a prosthetic leg I can bring, say, some maple syrup from Canada.
If Wikileaks is hosting the content, so is CNN, and FOX, and....
A device could have different settings, so you could turn on the color just when you want it.
That said... the same could be done for a netbook. So while they may be highlighting the "pretty pictures", the main reason is to have a dedicated device is, of course, content control.

My husband is always trying to convince me that I, like him, am a geek. I keep telling him: yIDoghQo'
I think it is going to be very useful for collaboration projects and some specific conversations. Of course, some people will stay staring at the screen the entire day, but that already happens with facebook, twitter, etc.
The point is.. you don't HAVE to. I like the way you can track the conversation even if you got there at a later time.
My guess there will be a first moment of wow-ness and them it will fall back to be used normally, like everything that is new.
Actually, the Clean Water Act regulates over a hundred water pollutants and if you want to know what is in your water, you can check this compilation from the New York Times, as well as their very good articles about water toxicity.
Funny thing: yesterday I accessed both articles directly, today they are requiring free registration. I think it is still worth it.
I think Drupal can be very useful, depending on the application. I am using it to build a pilot for A Water Quality knowledge and Information Network, as part as my Ph.D dissertation. For a Pilot, it works well. If the network grows and take off, than I guess we will have to reevaluate.
But these kind of tools are great for Pilot projects an I imagine that for simple applications there is no need to build anything from scratch.
If by just indexing content, like Google, you could get in trouble, isn't there a case to prosecute Slashdot as well?
After all, the site works basically with citations from other sources, and it would have to guarantee that the sources are legitimate and not copied material? How can someone managed that? Also, we talk about pirate bay and others all the time. Aren't we encouraging piracy...
If they are interested, I guess they could stretch the argument if they decide they don't like you...
I think it was Microsoft who started this crap. I am sorry, but an Engineer is someone who holds an Engineering Degree, period! And of course I am talking about an accredited degree. Call yourselves whatever you want, but leave Engineering alone.
It doesn't, really. But since someone pointed out that women are more likely to leave their careers because of husbands and babies, I though it was worth it to mention that one can finish a Ph.D and mantain a family (like lots and lots of others before me).
My baby did delay my Dissertation a little, but it was my choice, I will live with that.
It is not easy, but life is not easy. I don't see how blaming other people for our problems would help with anything.
About your Brazilian friends, I don't know who they are but I think you are completely misguided in your comments. Matriarchal-female society? You are on something, aren't you?
No, my friend, Brazilian men are just as "machos".. What happens is that usually academic environments are somewhat more enlighten than the average, everywhere.
But my point is not that there is no discrimination. (And I think a system of quotas would only makes matters worse)
My point is that you deal with it and move on...
Look, I am finishing my Ph.D in Civil Engineering, hopefully this year (I am a woman, Brazilian and had a baby during the Ph.D program).
I have never felt any problems with what you call "gatekeepers". There are plenty of incentives and opportunities for women in sciences, you just have to show your work.
Yes, there is probably a few jerks around, but what you do is tough it up, otherwise you will never make it as a scientist anyway.
And I am sorry, but maybe some women should not be choosing these careers anyway. I believe most of the disparity is because of lack of interest from them, not from any barriers in the system.

Maybe we should start a club or something...
oh, do we?
it is automatic... What could go wrong?

Why is this a troll? He/She is entitled to think the movie sucks. I didn't see Avatar yet but I certainly can say that Titanic sucks, big time.

If I remember correctly, you can turn that off

I wonder if all the data comes from the North Hemisphere? What happens in the south?

I guess the parallel could be better made for the guns. Pirate bay provided the tool for the "crime"... So, in this case, guns DO kill people?

So stop whining and get to work, people.
