  4. As long as we are dreaming ... on Future Ships Could Float On Bubbles · · Score: 0

Is to use a nuclear powered fully-submersed shell which uses super-cavitation to acheive high-speeds with minimum drag, and have it generate a powerful magnetic field above it to suspend a freighter above the water. Like a water-based, self-contained maglev.

Sure it's total impossible and you'll whine about minor problems like air friction of the freighter, the power requirements for doing something like this, and stabilizing the boat above the submersed shell, but wouldn't it look cool! And in the process we use the heat to change the viscosity of the water around the submerged part. Further we use the excess electricity to split the H2O into the components Hydrogen and Oxygen. Then we have giant gas collectors attached to the side of the tanker and we use the gas in the afterburners. Now wouldn't it SUPER cool to see a supertanker levitating in mid air with afterburners going?

  5. Re:Offshoot of supercavitation? on Future Ships Could Float On Bubbles · · Score: 1, Informative
Sounds a little like supercavitated torpedoes, where the bubbles minimize drag except in this case they aren't encasing the ship in air. What ever happened to supercavitation anyway? Was it actually ever used or extended beyond torpedoes?Yes and in the article they talk about that a little bit near the end.
The idea of air cavities has much in common with supercavitation, in which a submerged object such as a torpedo creates a single large bubble around itself. This slashes skin friction, bringing remarkable speeds within reach (New Scientist, 22 July 2000, p 26). Perhaps not surprisingly, Russian engineers who first developed supercavitating torpedoes have not only done plenty of research on air-cavity lubrication for ships, but have also put their ideas to work.
  6. But how will it affect buoyancy? on Future Ships Could Float On Bubbles · · Score: 4, Interesting

Since methane hydrates releases are still suspected in the sinking of ships, how do the researchers account for the loss of buoyancy? Since this research calls for redesign of current ship building know-how, how are they planning on addressing the buoyancy part of the equation? I don't discount the idea that they may not be taking in as much mail from the iconic blue boxes, but I wonder if total 1st class mail has decreased significally or only where it is picked up from? As older urban communities die off and people that can afford it flock to suburn developments (I know sweeping generalizations), are the blue boxes simply in the wrong place or has consumer culture of this service simply changed?

The best gift you can give your child is a stable family. Many people try to buy the happiness for/of their children. Others try to be their best friend. If you really want to help your kid out. Give them security in an insecure world. Model for your kids that life and relationships can be hard, but at the end of the day Dad and Mom are commited to each other and them "the kid(s)". Most of us will, like it or not, end up similar to our parents. How you treat your spouse becomes the norm and comfortable for them. Notice I am not saying the right way or even healthy, only what they are used to and most likely to reproduce. Later in life, despite all of our best efforts, we tend towards the relationships we see modeled around us. Words of wisdom that others have shared. 1+1=1 or 100%+100%=100% When you are fully devoted to building up your spouse and they are fully committed to building you up will both of your needs be met. The struggle should not be on "how do I get my needs met". If we could do that than there would be no reason to get married! From the personal experience, grace can carry you a long way and only when you are both working together do you achieve real happiness. If you want to help your Child, give them security and good model for their future relationships. Never fail to tell them you love them. While you may not like some of the things they do, you should always love them. Final thought before I step down from my soap box: Love is choice, lust or desire are feelings!
