My point was, Anybody making Mac apps now has no reason to discontinue making them. I know that is what the checkbox is for, and I cant believe any emulation runs at "full native speed". Close maybe, depending on the task, but not full speed, and certainly slower on the more complicated tasks.

  3. I think you better give it some more thought on First Look at Apple's Intel Developer Macs · · Score: 2, Insightful

I dont use and have no desire to use any "windows" apps... whatever that means. I use mac native apps (final cut studio, motion, soundtrack etc) Adobe CS, Cinema 4D and Maya - for major apps - very little else. You may mean games... or M$ office, but Im not a gamer and though I have office, I havent used it since I started trying out star office/open office (mostly I just use InDesign or Illustrator and recently iwork, ilife). For what I, and most people I know - there isn't anything else to need, not counting some shareware, plug-ins, utilities and god bless Radio lover. Thats not everyone but its a decent crossection of Macusers.

Developers spent more time previously porting to Mac than they will need to now, it's only a checkbox, and nobody wants to pump out a product that will be seen as "second rate" vs. other apps where the developer simply took a few minutes (checkbox) extra. And for such a small effort, who wouldn't want their previously windows only app to run properly on a box that doesnt go down with the associated windows issues?

Business stays in business by finding more and newer business -not by refusing to participate in an emerging market. If I were a developer I would see this as a new market, an opportunity to make a move, not something to shy from. Its almost easier to see the opposite of what you say happening, more developers starting to write for the Mac - because its simple, because they can and because it can pay.

I never think about Quark anymore except to troubleshoot someones crappy file or share a bitter laugh over their registration/licensing process.

I remember attending a conference for graphics professionals (not Macworld?, at Javits Center in New York, but the name escapes me...) and the Quark guy came onstage and said that PCs were the future and they weren't going to make an OSX upgrade for Mac - they didn't believe Apple was "fully commited to a new OS" and soon they would simply release 5.5 for OS9- basically everybody got up to leave (200 something or more people - this was a Mac crowd after all) about four people remained and they turned out to be journalists.

The next day Quark had about 20 people giving out pamphlets saying that sure, 5.5 would be for OS9 but the rest was a mis-quote... and they were working on a OSX version. This was when apple alrerady had OS10.2 released! I haven't touched Quark voluntarily since 4.1

    Sorry, no.

Every Dell laptop I've ever seen (up to 14-15") has been a 2" thick ugly black slab of plastic that weighed 3 times more than my PB and had half the battery life... I have no desire to give myself a hernia trying to move a 19" (9-10 lbs?) monster to do 2-3 hrs of work. The 17" Dells are 7.5-8-5 lbs-according to Dell but they've felt heavier to me in the field, esp if you need to carry a backup battery.

The idea of a 19" "portable desktop" is a bad idea as far as I'm concerned.

Gamers seem to be the obvious candidates for this. They're the only people I've seen who are fanatical enough to lug a thing like this around - and they can plug in. Even the 17" PB is at the far reaches of portable (6.9lbs), and those I know who got one - and have to carry it around - wish they got the 15" PB instead. The weight's not worth the screen estate. CAD guys I know will hate (DO hate) the (lack of) battery life. Same for tablets.

Engineers at HP, Dell, etc. design/spec their machines the same way Apple does. The company then buys the components and pays some factory somewhere to assemble it. It should work because they designed it to work, made working prototypes and have the crappy M$ software to test it with. It's not DIY on a massive scale.

Apple does it the same way. The hardware engineers have the same access to Mac OS that the HP guys have to M$ and its their job to get it to work.

If the PC engineers aren't spec'ing out the right parts or the assembly factory substitutes non-spec parts (QC?) then you have a point. Unless you're saying that these companies intentionally design and use suspect parts that may or may not be compatible with each other or the intended software and then do not test it to make sure it all works as intended. That goes for the component manufacturers as well. Are they intentionally making a product that will not work within known M$ parameters?

PC manufacturers build their machines the same way Apple does (in Taiwan or somewhere, in many of the same factories) and if it doesn't work then its bad design or poor manufacturing.

To say "Apple builds..." isn't accurate. They don't "build" anything.

To say "most PC hardware is saddled with crappy M$ software" is accurate? Yes.
As for Adobe, the point was that they get their software to run on multiple machines, brands, OSs, CPUs, graphics cards etc because it's designed, engineered, and tested more rigorously than M$. It doesn't happen by accident. Would it be possible to make a version of Photoshop or Acrobat that ran on ATI but not on Nvidia? Sure. Good idea? No...

And if people continue to buy hardware and or software that doesn't work for whatever reason when there are viable alternatives then they can't complain much.
