What? "OSX isn't easy to install because it's better designed or better written." Thats just silly...
Of course that is why its easier to intall, does Adobe intall uniquely to every model or brand of computer? No it does not. There have been at least 13 different macs (G3 all-in-one, beige G3, blue/white G3, G4 and G5 powermac desktops - Powerbook G3 and G4 - imac all-in-one, imac flat-panel G4, imac G5, emac G4,ibook clamshell, ibook G3 and ibook G4 ) going back to 1997 that I have installed OSX on and it did the same exact thing EVERY TIME. "Put CD in drive... Click install button... Click next a few times in the normal GUI... Wait for the progress bar... Finished." (gratis beelsbob) Not only that but there have been significant architectural, RAM types, CPU upgrades/revisions within those mac models as well. Many of these machines came out years before OSX hit the market.
You dont have to believe it if you dont want to but its true - the mac does it better. I dont have to add anything about M$ to make it more true.
I have seen the mini here at the NYC Apple store and it's silent. I had assumed it was fanless because I couldn't hear any fan noise... Of course the store was packed
You're a smart guy, you're following this thread clarifying questions as you go and have posted alot of interesting points previousy...
Why the resistance to the mac?, you posted an interesting comment on your "ipod conversion"... Why did your wife want one anyway? Just the box? Has she used a mac before and didn't like it?
Would it be a real hassle to discover mac os as well? Im sure you can figure out any network/compatability issues (if I can anybody can) and the basics differences of the GUI are no real scare. Add the excellent FREE software and lack of security etc... what if you really enjoy the thing?
I dont want to ram more mac down your throat (like you mentioned before - you've been around... but you did ask and there aren't many windows replies to the "it can't be done" mac fans - myself included) but try it- you might like it.
I would love for God to come down and tell everyone that yes The Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection is basically correct, that the Bible is a collection of bed-time stories for humans who were not capable of understanding much at the time.
"Imagine trying to explain cellular division, DNA and reproductory process to a bunch of illiterate sheep herders! Of course I made the world that way - But even worse, you haven't let go of that old book and made any progress! You can fly to the moon now, created supercomputers and digital watches - Get a life! Move on"!
Did it ever occur to you there are things outside of apples control re:price?
Dollar-pound conversion, import/export, licensing/legal issues and trade imbalance issues are government jurisdiction. Blame the shrub for that not apple...
Is anything ever going to be a 1=1 conversion? Not until we share a common currency and international shipping rates are free.
Are higher UK sales tax rates another apple "rip-off"?
If you don't want one, can't afford one-fine, don't buy one, but please come up with a real reason.
The very fact that most here do not like this idea for whatever reason (heard it before, not logical, not this or that yada yada yada) makes it all the more likely.
"the average user is way out of his league in dealing with the challenges of modern computing."
You are all part of the status quo, you are still fighting the last war. Everyone here reads Stephenson and Gibson, but still doesn't see past what they have - "what I have will continue"
It will all change - this may not be it-but it will change. And it should be no great surprise to anybody here that when it does it will involve the death of the desktop/laptop as we know it.
Happy new year!
"it appears as a regular USB HD when you hook it up to your PC. So you don't need any drivers or software to copy anything you want to the device"
Everything the iRiver does you can do with the ipod also... just go to ipod preferences and change from "auto-update ipod to library" to "manual update"
tags likwise can be changed manually -
You may say thats a hassel but "the database is a joke, and there's no real shuffle feature (though you can hack something together for that)" isn't more trouble?
USB? Yuck!
It already has one
You can get into it using the supplied Firewire cable/dockconnector on the bottom... You dont want/need USB
You would need a bus powered (2.5") HD and it will most likely eat your battery alive but can be done
software-access-interface is another issue, but since my 2.5 FWHD is at home I'll have to wait until I get home to give it a shot...
(probably won't work)
Yes, the author seems to also miss the point that you have two eyes and a camera only has one...
"every thing you see is sharp and in focus"
I'll pass on his failure to mention myopia...
So much great tech gets thrown into the garbage in Japan they have a name for the people who seek out the trash - Master of garbage. Gomi no sensi is a Japanese term for people who "find" great working stuff in the garbage. People in Japan will buy a new tv simply because their tv is 1 or 2 years old. Novelty (new) means something different there, it's closer to "original" than "trendy". It drives the culture and the economy - newer = better. Very far from the cliché of the Japanese as "copycats". I've lived there and I recommend it highly.
In America people say "if it aint broke don't fix it". That attitude is why "early adopter" (ie: trendy bastard, yuppy scum, geek) has a borderline negative connotation here.
We have an agricultural attitude here about almost everything - "built to last". As a culture, most Americans yearn for a fictional "leave it to beaver" past and will not buy a new anything until the old one is dead. Most Americans are simply more conservative than they/you think they are. Look at how most Americans choose whom to vote for for president. (I'm a New Yorker, I'll skip that one for now...) Something most slashdotters forget - you are not typical Americans.
I am not saying its perfect in Japan and bad in America, far from it. But I will say travel anywhere, anytime you can, broaden your mind. Its all good.
I have spent the last 7 years as a painter/graphic artist/art director in NYC and twice a day I have to reply to a non-creative (Account, Copy, Admin etc.) about "why cant I make art look good too".
Webster: Art: 1. skill acquired by experience, study, or observation 2. a branch of learning.
That doesnt mean you cant do it - you can - but its hard work. You never "get there", but you can certainly get better. Its a continuous process and you will probably feel vaguely uncomfortable for a very long time. Just keep trying to learn and improve. Only a pretentious bastard believes everything they do is a holy nugget (it never is) and you do not want to be one of those.
Find and hang out with the kind of people who do what you want to do and learn from them... Take basic drawing and design classes... Most of all, PAY ATTENTION to what you like and learn from it.
On the other hand, if its a big professional deal ($$$) and you need the help - hire an artist. We all want to learn and grow but sometimes you need to call in a professional. PIXAR has specialized division of labor - why not you?
This is a little like the Gary Kildall (the man who could have been Bill Gates) story a few days back. A pioneer from the early days isn't happy about the current state of affairs... "I could have/should have/would have done it better but THEY...".
Interesting man, bad article.

If you have the $ to burn, by all means choose the 20". Personally, as a scale vs. size issue, I think the 17" is the more attractive.

Good luck either way
Que needed soundtrack for this, along the lines of Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra...
"Hey baby..."
shudder
