    I said that blackmailing for hundreds of thousands of dollars is not an option for those with scruples. There is no ambiguity in that sentence.

    Current iPods (besides the shuffle) have iPod-specific dock connectors, not FireWire connectors. That would not have been a factor.

    It's the rather scary idea of using JavaScript on a webpage to run XML-RPC requests to a remote server and update the local page, allowing for flashy stuff like Google Maps and GMail that does not require a new page to be loaded.

    Too bad it requires JavaScript!

    I may have gotten the tape drive to work ONCE. I was 5 and didn't bother reading the instructions. I could save things just fine but I could not figure out the correct arguments for opening files off tape.

    Didn't the Newton switch to using Graffiti (as in what the Palm uses) as its native handwriting recognition software before it was killed?

    I think it's a much better interface than WinXP's or Linux's app switchers, although I admit the differences are minimal.

    Um, the WinXP alt-tab works exactly as you describe, and with the Microsoft powertoys, you can actually make it display a preview of the window you are switching to.

    The lack of virtual desktops on Mac OS is a bit of a drag, though.

    apple did not have .app bundles the last time they switched processors. they made a much bigger change to the structure of an executable. every mac file consists of a data fork and a resource fork. 68k code was kept in the resource fork, typically in a resource of type CODE iirc, and powerpc code went into the data fork, which in pre-powerpc mac os was completely absent from most applications.

    My account had a bogus email address after it got compromised, until I changed it (and then it was suspended) They are probably holding off everything until the situation is more under control.

    Elegant or no, this was not an atypical solution. I had catalogs showing available emulator cards for the Apple II (x86 for DOS or Z80 for CP/M) and the TI 99/4A (which was actually an outboard hardware module, not a card)

    Treo smartphones and PocketPC phones can hold decent chunks of music, and have builtin phones. You can even get SSH and Remote Desktop clients for them.

    the MacBook specs page says that both models will have a 667 MHz FSB. not bad, light years better than the current product.

    3) Virtual PC and WINE running under Linux do not use the Microsoft Graphics Rendering Engine.

    Virtual PC runs plain ol' Windows, so it does, in fact, use the affected DLL.
