Spotlight doesn't support indexing of network volumes, which is a killer. It'll support them in Leopard (you'll be able to search spotlight indexes of remote servers)
we can't wait.
Like the article states, its more suited for some ISPs than others! I think its very dangerous ground for an ISP, for the sake of installing, say, CommuniGate and having a decent web mail interface and full control - Its surely too much risk?
I think ISPs will always want 100% control over all their services (whether this benefits the user is debatable...)
So you are a believer in the whole Xenu, thetan, sci-fi story, etc deal?
Out of interest, how much has scientology cost you so far? And how long have you been involved with it? What good has it done you so far?
What do you think about Hubbard's own quotes about profiting from creating ones own religion?
Hmm. Okay... I'm not a believer in the whole Xenu thing, per se. But mainly because I don't know/enough/ about it - I am quite open to the idea, but currently - I personally don't believe it. Yet. The whole Xenu thing is a bit of an interesting sore point for the church, and people are very touchy about it. It sucks when people are too embarrassed to talk about their own religion because of peoples incorrect interpretations of it:)
Hasn't cost me anything, well, nothing significant. The odd donation at a church and so on. Nothing huge, no more than going to any other church and leaving a good will donation. I've been involved with it for 5 or so years (I'm 20ish, young, ack) heard about it from a few friends, at the time I was curious about religion -- decided I'd use my Computer Science Logic whilst looking for a religion, and amusingly Scientology came out top.
What good has it done for me? Lots. More confident, talkative, and generally nicer. Before I took Scientology seriously I was the typical closed computer nerd - Now I'm a totally different, nicer, friendlier person.
Quotes are just that, Quotes. They arent accurate, they aren't a persons final belief. I don't take his quote seriously, and quite frankly I wouldn't care if it was true. Its helped me, and it's helped some friends - and I don't know anyone it has hurt.
I really really really recommend you check out the Dianetics, if only for your own curiosity. For the sake of $10, its worth the chance that it may make a difference to you.
I think i'll preorder one -- I spent tons of time in photoshop / FCP / games / etc and having one keyboard rather than *looks* four dangling off my wall will be a life saver.
I'm sure there is a nice saying about don't believe everything you read, or something.
Scientology could do lots of good for people (which is does) but its shadowed by stereotypes - so no one will believe them. Ever.
Scientology isn't some evil 'cult', or at least, I've never came across anything like that.
I always just see it equally as absurd as any other religion.. so choose one that works for you, and ignore all the silly websites claiming otherwise:)
PS, I was never brainwashed, unfortunately - maybe it'd make me forget the likes of goatse and tubgirl...
Norton is the single worst application you could use on a PC.
At work we installed it on our CAD machines - and it totally killed the performance. We eventually switched to Panda, and have been really impressed. Saying that, Panda still has those bloody annoying popups telling the user it's doing something.
I wish the applications would just DO it, rather than constantly telling users about what they're abouts to do.
I have 20mbps at home, and 2mbit SDSL at work -- the work internet connection is painful. Its practically unusable if I need to download a file over about 100Mb (Apple Dev Connection, Linux, etc etc.)
At home if I'm downloading a fairly large file and its going under about 5mbits, I usually cancel it and try desperately to find a decent mirror. Patience is a virtue eh?
What do you guys have "at home"? I'm on 20mbit down / 512kbps up.
Microsoft (and all other companies) can easily turn a poor sales performance (eg, Vista) into an amazing, best ever, look how great we're doing! PR Message.
I think 20Million Licenses in 4 months is still pretty decent, doubt Microsoft is considering Vista a failure yet!
I guess it'll be a few more years (?) until Vista starts making a profit -- that is, when Businesses upgrade to it. I assume thats where they make all their money.
Good.
Don't mod stuff and expect to be able to play on microsofts network. The fact that people pay doesn't mean that you should be able to connect with modified hardware.
I'm actually suprised this hasn't happened already...
I remember when I had a job offer and could track the changes of the contract they emailed me, was interesting to see the changes they made! (in a good way, suprisingly)
Is track changes on by default? I assume so...
Weak. Crackdown is easily one of the best 360 games - and its being shunned for a crappy beta?!
Crackdown is amazing, the co op adds literally end less hours of fun. And don't even get me started on the downloadable content...
Computer Science has always been just a subset of Mathematics, its slowly shying away from pure mathematica and into actual development, real world problem solving and such.
Stuff like group work, Object design, Networking Tools, C++ are useful tools in 90% of environments a Computer Scientist is likely to work in.
Dork of a lecturer requires our code be submitted on a floppy disk. Shame none of my computers (macs and pcs) have floppy disk drives, and none of the Uni computers have floppy disk drives.
I submitted it on a flash drive with a note saying that Floppy Disks died years ago.
He gave me D.
Fucker, you'd think given that he got a free 256Mb flash drive...!
his influence and persona will have engulfed the company. They're fucking good at what they do -- making computers useable, for everyone.
I think Jobs' has been planning his retirement/whatever -- look at the recent changes:
a) Moving to Intel processors, offering huge speed and price benefits. A *monumental* step
b) Diversity. Not just computers, MP3 Players, Phones, Software, Media!
heck, even the little things like giving Apple a 2 button mouse.
No one except Jobs could have put Apple on the road to success, now they're on it they'll easily continue to rock. ESPECIALLY with people like Ive and Schiller.
Great, another windows version! It never ceases to amaze how MS can release 4 copies of Office in the period OS X gets one.
I hear the next Apple version is coming in another 12 months or so... Ridiculously long waiting periods.
The most secure OS ever? No one will take them seriously seeing as a) Its Microsoft, b) Its a ridiculous claim, c) The OS has been delayed and delayed and delayed, had tons of stuff removed, and d) THE OS ISNT EVEN OUT YET!
Microsoft loves making such bold ridiculous statements. Maybe Vista is the most secure Windows platform ever (even that'd be impressive, NT was fairly solid...) but at least wait till launch for christs sake!
Vista is slowly turning into the biggest joke in the Computing Industry, if they continue at this rate they'll even beat Windows ME..!
PS- are the comments detail bar along the top of your screen (even when you scroll down), and the muliple story categories new? Swear I never noticed those before...
same, probably less than 1%. I can't even think what SME businesses _could_ spend it on besides the obvious AV / Firewall stuff ...
Spotlight doesn't support indexing of network volumes, which is a killer. It'll support them in Leopard (you'll be able to search spotlight indexes of remote servers) we can't wait.
Pretty pissed there is no details on the new enterprise stuff though, want network backups, iCalendars ...
and a new iWork would have been neat, but thats more for consumers.
Oh and the iPhone SDK is such a cop out. Shocking.
I think ISPs will always want 100% control over all their services (whether this benefits the user is debatable...)
and Google is evil! Mod post as troll! :)

I'll be impressed if many Linux Hackers are willing to break a $1500 keyboard to try and install Linux, there is dedication!
and I'm sure chicks will dig it!

But thanks for speaking on behalf of everyone at slashdot!

Companies place shareholders profits over ethics. With censorship comes government approval, with that, comes money. Just ask google.

You really REALLY under-estimate the resources the UK Police service has.
