I heard (and it was a years ago, I'm not going to go looking) a number of farmers who were affected by the estate tax talking on NPR (I think ATC.) Right now I know a farmer who's land used to be worth very little (20 years ago) but now the city is getting closer and the land is worth in excess of $25M, but he still lives day to day unless he wants to sell some land or borrow against it. When his kids have to pay the estate tax, they won't be able to. They WILL HAVE to SELL some of the land to pay the tax.

The real rich use corporations and generation jumping trusts to avoid this situation or believe in the estate tax and make their inheritors prepare to pay it.

They could run on it now! Most of Europe has B20 diesel which has 20% Bio, 80% Petro diesel. Kind of like in the United States a lot of gas is 10% ethanol.

While this doesn't do a lot to reduce emissions right away, it is renewable at least and all diesel engines can run on B100. After that push to require diesel engines to run on straight vegetable oil, which is a much cleaner, renewable source.

Eventually we could think about moving to hydrogen as well.

And I think we should heavily consider Wind and Sun. If every new house built had supplemental Solar Power it could greatly reduce our need for power over the long haul. I know California had some new regulation requiring solar power on a percentage of new houses and over 10 years it would be equivalent to building a couple medium to large coal plants in the state, although I don't remember the GWh totals.

What happened anyway? It used to be the republican party stood for low taxes, small government, strict interpretation of the constitution and bill of rights, and keeping out of the daily lives of people (for better or worse). Now they are for big government, new branches of the beuracracy, deficiet spending, and reducing the seperation between church and state.

I think they got taken over the by the Christian Right, which is the moralistic wing of the Republican party. Bob Barr is about as "conservative" as it gets and he almost gave the Libertarian an endorsement over this a number of core conservative issues. I do miss the pre-Nixon republican era, that's for sure. Regan was alright, but I'm not sure he was that conservative, especially in the end. I think Regan's success may have something to do with the new direction of the party though.

The definition of libertarian is one who is for minimal government intrusion in both personal and economic life. A person for personal freedom and more government programs is a liberal. A person for minimal government intrusion in economic life and more intruusion in personal life is a conservative. Of course the dems and repubs here in the U.S. don't fit those definitions. The repubs used to be libertarians before the Christian "Right" got so involved.
