i don't think so.. i use mandrake 10 with kernel 2.6.3-7-up4GB and am using a radeon 9200 Pro and have had no trouble getting the driver modules to recompile for my kernel.
perhaps these suggestions will help you to get your radeon working with 3d acceleration under Linux, as mine works fine(Radeon 9200 Pro on Mandrake 10.0 Official w/ kernel 2.6.3-7-up4GB)
1. The only replacement for Windows on the desktop is Mac OS X. Linux is not that replacement.

Now, let's seeeeee...Linux runs on all of the above as well as mainframes, routers/switches, hardware firewalls, Sun's hardware such as Sparc boxes, and, get this, wait for it....Apple's hardware!!

i hardly think that F/OSS people would get the full blame for such acts. there are just as many immature asshats using Windows, OS X, and whatnot as there are asshats using F/OSS. When you use a freely editable system such as a wiki or a blog, then the asshats will show up to make themselves known.
