Well I'd say first and foremost... you are looking at the last mile part of the business. Just look at any time you order a package and watch the tracking info. Generally speaking they make about 3 pretty long hops before they get to your local sorting station, and then to your house. So even if hypothetically it was always going to be impossible to automate the last leg of the trip of delivering the package to your house. The amount of human drivers could still be reduced by at least 2/3rds even if all they eliminate is the internal station to station delivery drivers.
Right now it seems like we've got 2 real camps for news. The mainstream media, which 99% of the time their extent of "journalism" is to read the press releases/talking points of the corporations, politicians, political parties etc... that help fund them, and expend zero resources finding out whether any of it is actually true or not.
Then we have the wild west of free media. A world where they take the same press releases, then pull out of their ass whatever interpretation and guesses they can make from that fit the bias's of the target audience.
Neither type is worth the pixels on the screen they are written on
While I agree some security conscious people do in fact feel that way, I'd still say that is far more likely nowhere near a significant percentage. I'd be willing to bet that in percentages of reasons.
10% use 2f
85% either are unaware, consider it too much trouble, got annoyed with it taking more than 15 seconds to log in at their school/work etc... and turned it off etc... They probably still already gave google all that information as password reset options.
5% worry about giving google more information, or have actual programs that are incompatible.
To get the ground going on software, you need a smart coder, a computer good enough to run it, and a boatload of free time, if you treat your time as worthless, the high end of the cost is probably in the tens of thousands of dollars. Developing microscopic computer chips... you'd likely need billions of dollars worth of equipment, not to mention a huge team of people specialized in the extreme levels of multiple fields.
Nah they need to keep selling the point that they are still working off of the flawless plans written by steve jobs. Blaming jobs would be like North Korea blaming Kim Jong Il, or Kim Il Sung for their problems. They are supposed to imply thier past leaders were divine gods incapable of mistakes.
While I agree with you in general, I also used to work in a staples durring that timeframe. Actually did have relatively regular people asking for batteries... however those were the wild wild west of phone days. IE there were 40 competing battery types, heck there were like 15 competing phone charger cables. So we had a bunch of batteries, but when people asked for them, we never had the right one for their phone. No one type of phone was popular enough to be the right one.
maybe your definition of a scumbag and mine are very different. Would you also hate someone who goes bursting in saving children from child rapists, just because he wants to see his face in the headlines? Do you spend any time to find out whether the firemen or similar jobs save lives or families because the job pays well or they just like the social respect the job gives them?
well the point is the error message is to give the person a clue as to why it didn't work, IE hint to them that they need to look at the username or password. If making it easier on dumb users wasn't the idea, "login failed" or simply "wrong" is easier than any of them. It isn't particularly helpful to someone non computer savy enough to understand the possible reasons why. The point of the message is to idiot resistant at least the question of "why can't I log in".
It may supprise you, that those are suffering from 2 problems.
1. They are still being automated to a degree. Deep learning bots etc... are certainly putting more and more work into getting those tasks covered.
2. When the other jobs start collapsing, assuming the others can find a way into education etc.... there aren't enough of those jobs to fit the millions of people who are losing their jobs, and while you probably will keep prefrence in your nice job if you have it due to experience, your wages will also hit the toilet as you just became much easier to replace.
If the whole system falls appart when everyone does the smart play... and there's absolutely no cover whatsoever for those who don't do the smart play, we have a pretty broken system.
The issue is the adpocolypse was created when the walstreet journal messed with public opinion.. They basically showed a coke ad on a racist video and said "this makes it look like coke supports racists". Of which of course nobody thought, but you know the WSJ was able to sell the article in a way that made cokes shareholders think "ooh it is possible someone might think that, therefore we must not advertise with youtube". and of course same thing happened simultaniously with starbucks, and most of the guys pouring big money into youtube advertisements.
In totally unrelated news... was it comcast that's promise not to throttle anything even if net neutrality went away dissapeared from their webpage? It's almost as if the workarounds for the "solution" were covered ages ago.
iI'd still say that analogy is not quite right though.. while yes with uber and lyft you can install both apps on your phone. It is merely because it is your phone. Uber provides the uber app, Is there a button in that app to show lyft services inside of the uber ap? No, but of course the phone allows you to install either app without issue.
That I believe is where the huge life or death difference is between these 2 issues. Your choice of ISP is determined by your location, and obviously not every location even gives you more than 1 option. You are totally free to use duckduckgo and yahoo. for whatever you want if you don't like googles services, plenty of other options.
But lastly I think the biggest thing the article ignores... is do we really care how good or bad the people fighting on our side are or should we even. Fact is you don't win political battles without really rich and powerful people on your side, and for the most part.... it ain't the saints that have billions of dollars to throw at a problem.
We didn't have to like the soviets to fight the nazi's, and it certianly would have made the war a lot harder for either side if we asked them to leave, or if we left ourself just because we didn't agree with the soviets on much other than... we have to stop this crap.
I wouldn't imagine them being "scared" of our nature at all... any more than americans are "scared" of chimpanzees. If a species is able to get to earth from several lightyears away... they are hundreds of years ahead of us scientifically... they'd have no reason to be "scared' of something that they can easily use precautions to avoid every possible threat we could pose.
I'd say it's closer to what air bnb explicitly would allow. Say per the rules, they can have a camera in the living room, so long as it is disclosed to the guests. You are quite literally aknowledging it's disclosure to prove it's existence.
Well less fake examples you could use are actual countries that fell. In short there is the collateral behind the currency being the credibility of the government or organization that creates it. Generally speaking we don't expect the map to be redrawn in our lifetime.
Only time will tell if it's a phobia. I mean it's a thing, that's getting rapidly more prevailent in our society, and pretty unarguably if it goes wrong it could fairly easily kill off the entirety of the human species. I mean at the time, there would have been a real good debate whether the native american's had a phobia of European Settlers.. but time eventually told that the "irrational" part of any fears they had, would be massively inaccurate.
I'm not saying he's right... I'm saying his concerns aren't demonstrably false, and time will tell. I would say he has a strong fear of them, but it isn't necessarily irrational by any means.
Nobody's fighting for facebook, twitter and google. (well maybe facebook, twitter and google). We are fighting with facebook, twiter and google for freedom of the internet. Lets go godwin here... Just because we fought the Nazi's, doesn't mean we saw the soviet union as good guys.
Honestly I can't say that isn't really the factor, name the country that doesn't have a known history of the government in bed with serious malware threats. Moving to the birthplace of most of the major state sponsored malware threats isn't exactly a huge step up. Stuxnet, flame etc... Not to mention the at least somewhat shady appearences of truecrypts end etc...
I'm not saying the russia concerns aren't certainly plausible, the kremlin certainly is not above strong arming anyone into doing anything. But it isn't like we can't just act like all other countries are perfect little angels that would never stoop so low as to pressure a company to compromise security in their own interests.
What content are they losing... practically everything https://www.digitaltrends.com/... Basically 80% of what they are getting, is individual movies much of what they are losing is 4+ seasons of shows. Last batch of removals took out house, which was my wife's favorate (rewatch infinate times to get to sleep) series. Now there's basically nothing left. Admitted it isn't entirely netflix's fault, seems like everyone and their mother thinks they can run their own streaming site.
at the rate things are going, it looks like streaming will lead to the al-a-carte that people wanted with cable TV. IE ideally each network will be be 5 a month or so. and you pay for the ones you want.
The big thing he's missing, is he's comparing 2 different era's. In the past, automation had more or less been stepping in on physical labor. Mental labor was the human's work. This guy works at google, one of the biggest centers for getting computers to compete with humans on intellectual tasks. Google has just worked to defeat humans at go for crying out loud, which was originally thought to be one of the hardest mental tasks for computers to do. Right now the only field in which computers aren't either biting at our heels, or already past us on is creativity... but there's only so much room for us to reach that, and to some extent creativity involves a certain amount of natural talent is necessary.
We can all say "we learned we won't do that shit again", but as long as there are greedy corporations and politicians, that's hard to guarantee. Just look at the wall street collapses. Oh we learned from those mistakes, we're putting in all these regulations to help prevent this from happening again. 2 years later begins the rise of "OK these regulations are too restrictive, lets start removing them".
Well a computer might struggle to deal with things going unpredictably. But so do humans, and that's where I have to say the automated systems will more likely shine. Most humans will only experience blowouts or hydroplane events once or twice in their lifetime, and will more likely than not react poorly.
Meanwhile a deep learning AI will effectively be born with all of the knowledge of it's previous iterations, and quite likely gain updates that include data from the experiences of hundreds if not hundreds of thousands of other systems. So in fringe events where human instinct is usually wrong, and humans usually only deal with once in a lifetime (so they are never actually experienced with them). Machines will be able to come at them with years of experience.
Actually I'd imagine further the other way, their business model probably relied on it encouraging many to get the browser, and few people using the VPN, and instead it resulted in people who already use the browser just using the vpn and few new customers.
yeah, especially when you have something specific you care to find. Nothing sucks more than when you have a 50 step task, and you just need help on one tiny part of it, and all you can find is a 2 hour video detailing every step. I want to hit control F and search for the one piece I need help with.
