Chances are that if the kids are able to recognize what is going on they are ready for the lessons on the subjects.
Besides porn is just a small part of the many "problems" on the net, teach your kids to deal with all off them and hope that this knowledge will be used when they are faced with porn or other things elsewhere.
is it better to allow the botnet to continue unabated, or perhaps to risk crashing a computer controlling a heart monitor somewhere?" I would suggest that if a mission-critical system like that is already infected with a bot, the damage is done -- might as well attempt to clean it at that point. What if that attempt caused that computer to reboot or even crash?
Company owns the toilet/washroom as well, I doubt any employer would argue they have the right to check on those as well.
But give the people the option to access their private email from work and do monitor their work email. Then again I expect them to answer the occasional phonecall from work in their private time, so it all evens out.
If you need to fire an employee because they are not doing their job do so, don't use silly arguments like browsing porn/nazi/bible/stockmarket sites as an excuse.
I have only been in the country a couple of years and had Canadian Tire fix my airconditioning this summer, they had 11 attempts replaced every part at least once and I spend over 2400 dollars, sadly it still not working. It was an expensive lesson.
Geeks are humans as well and and some will be greedy assholes, we all have had to go trough great lengths to filter the daily spam to prove that point.
If they are network based adds, it should be fairly easy to block them, If they are on the DVD itself I think most ppl could be bothered to wait a few days in order to download a free and cleaned up version.
I don't think this is a big deal, I dislike adds with a passion and filter them out aggressively, only adds I still allow are the google text adds. I will even follow the links at times if they are relevant to what I am looking for....
The only people who are going to be upset in the long run are the game makers and their advertisers.....
I don't think that it's posible to tax an illegal activety, so either this tax on CD's and/or mp3players is not legal or the downloading is not legal. I think this will finaly legalize the sharing of music as it should be.
Besides, you could simply cross the border to buy an ipod or even buy it by mail order from any another country within the EU.
If the tax was added at the point of sale, A foreigner would be able to get the tax back when the item is exported, thus creating paperwork and more wasted tax payers money. Let alone the potential for fraud.
Yeah, I would tell my bosses that I am legaly allowed to read their emails. However in order to prevent me from doing so they should use encryption. Since it would be illegal for me to decrypt anything encrypted. (Even if it is only rot 13)
Unfortunatly the Chinese government can now (rightly) claim that they are trying to protect the population from the lying western media.

(Not that I agree with Google, nor for that matter with the Chinese government)

This seems to me just a witch hunt against the Chinese.
