Enjoy it now while it lasts. FCC is allowing carriers to pull the plug on AMPS soon. We ( as in the carrier I work for) are vastly de-growing the AMPS network to a barebones network with BARE minimum capacity. Also as this is occuring, there have been cells that were just removed altogether eliminating AMPS coverage altogether. I do agree however, three watt bag/install phones are the shit for voice calls.

It's about passion too..... Those first albums represent the artists' ideals and their want to make a great piece of work. The early albums contain the work the artists did when all they cared about was their art and "making it". They poured their heart and soul into it.

Later on, the industry wears on them and they no longer produce great music, and/or lose interest in their art and move on.

The handset is 50% of the network. If you use the free/cheapo phone that comes with a plan, your call quality will reflect it. The RAZR is a good phone because it contains a good transciever. All too often I see people balk at paying $200 for a good wireless handset and then complain that their service sucks. It makes a difference.

I have a friend that claims he "should not have to buy a phone because he is buying the service". I lagh (intentional poor spelling for the nazi's) and ask him what model TV he got when he sighend up for CATV, or what kind of PC did he get for subscribing to AOL.

As for the parent's comment that providers should improve the network, Wireless telephony is one of the most capital intensive industries. There would be blanket coverage if everyone was willing to pay $300/month. Also, blame your local government officials and zoning boards that deny zoning variances and permits to build cell sites where they are needed.

To stay on topic, I do pay for it. I PAY my ever increasing CATV bill every month. I Pay for access to the network programming. I even pay all of the regulatory fees that the CATV company charges to offset their regulatory/franchise costs.

My issue is that fact that the media corps want control over all content and want to exercise that control how THEY see fit. What market share does this "piracy" represent anyway? After all, 99% of homes in America have at least one TV, and many pay for CATV, DBS, etc.

On another note how could the MPAA even quantize the lost revenue from this?

Another example of the corps insisting that you pay for everything, every time you use it. "Back in the old days...." I agree that AMPS did have better coverage, BUT, the capacity of the network left much to be desired. If the Wireless industry did not push digital services, the service would be almost unusable today due to sheer number of calls made per day.

    Spectrum use is the problem.

Each analog (AMPS) call requires the use of it own dedicated channel. If AMPS was prevalent with todays wireless usage, the cell sites would be running at full capacity all day long. Sounds like a good thing right? Not so if there are no channels left for when you want to make a call....Fast busy, redial. Also you can't just add more channels, because interference issues with other sites, will degrade the call quality and lead to inefficinet re-use of the scarce spectrum

I often hear Just get a Tri-Band Phone. I suppose its good advice, but I often find the AMPS tranciever in most modern phones blow. Carriers also will make it difficult for your handset to acually register on the AMPS network. In other words, your digital signal has to be in the dirt for you to even register on the AMPS system.

Which leads me to my next point. The phone itself is half of the network. A better quality phone usually has a better tranciever. Typically, the better the tranciever, the better the call. If you buy your handset based on the XCVR, you will be much happier in the long run when the novelty of the Camera,PDA, MP3,SMS features wears off.

Another thing I hear often is my phone sucks . Turns out, they are using the "Free Phone" that they bragged about getting when the signed up. The free phones work, but not as well as a better model that you pay for. You would be surprised at the difference that a handset can make.

Imagine if you got a P133/16MB/1GB PC free with your DSL/Cable. Assuming you are using your connection like avg Joe uses it today ( emailing pics,Flash,Shockwave, Streaming Vid,etc NOT Lynx, command line apps, etc.) would you blame the service provider for the Poor performance? Probably not because you would throw the PC in your closet or make a Linux router/firewall out of it, and use your PC( or machinne du jour) that is better.

If you believe that intelligence agencied all over the world are not using torture as a tool, you truly are naive. The USA's white horse is not as clean as you think if look closely.

It is amazing to me that those who believe the war in Iraq is a good idea have no problem changing their reason for the illegal war. First it was the terror fear mongering: WMD. Then it became a humanitarian issue: Liberating the Iraqi people from the tyranny of Saddam Husein. Now it's to spread democracy. what will it be in 6 months if the elections don't work?

Also, to Americans who are in favor of this war, join the military if you have not already. Our troops could use help. after all they don't issue stop-loss orders and reactivate the IRR when there are plenty of troops. If you truly believe that it is a just cause, stop aruguing with me and other anti-warriors and GO FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN.

If GWB had said we must liberate Iraq to spread democracy in the Middle East during his State of the Union speech in 2003, I doubt as many Americans would be behind GWB and the war.

The fact of the matter is we invaded another soverign (sp?) nation who did not attack us. No matter how you justify it, it is still what happened.

We did it for the Oil. Plain and simple. Not to take the oil so we can drive GTO's that get .5mpg, but ensure that we have unfettered access to the oil later in the century when it starts becoming scarce. Pro-war arguments seem to ignore the fact that this region has the last remaining large oil reserves on the planet. The Geo-Strategic ( or is it strategery) implications of the region are ENORMOUS.

The US needs to ensure that oil flow from the region would not be interrupted. Remember, F-16's and B-1's dont run on fuel cells.

Neither does our economy. Take a look at the the number of trucks on the freeway sometime. Imagine the impact on our economy if they were forced to not run for one day. Think about it.
