Ruby. I'm not a fan of it, but here's why it'd make a great starter language:
1. Loose, Forgiving, English-Like Syntax
2. Supported Everywhere
3. You can start with Functional Programming and later introduce OO.
Finally, DONT FORGET TO MAKE THEM GRADUATE. Challenge them on their last few projects and make them do it in c++ or Java. I worked with a brilliant 15yr old in college (highschool programming contest), but he refused to try anything but Ruby "cuz it's best."
This author must be joking, Windows grinds away continuously at my hard drive whether I have any applications open or not, even with 2gb of ram. I develop solely on Linux and OSX... they don't touch the hard drive unless it needs to and page memory very efficiently. Plus, Linux and OSX actually leave some of my system resources free to actually run programs with! Imagine that!
Right now on OSX I have 3 instances of eclipse running, two tomcat servers and a virtual machine with Vista running in it. Try THAT on a windows box!
1980 called and wants their technology back. Please move on to AAC or Vorbis.
It's not an "open" format (it's patented). Use something that's better (AAC) or actually open (Vorbis)
Thank you
But I wasn't aware system restore does hourly, weekly, monthly and yearly differential backups of your entire filesystem... You have definitively proved you know much more about these things as I.
Hmm.... I didn't think about the DRM stuff. I don't buy anything off itunes, so never have had that problem. I buy CD's, rip, hide CD's in attic. I have backup copy when Microsoft regularly destroys my linux partition when it detects something "non-microsoft" or a "boot sector virus."
Not sure I feel locked in on my apple box considering all my gnu-utils and everything else open source compiles directly on the BSD subsystem with little modification. I guess if you swing down the ipod route and are too lazy to use your ipod-nikes to go to walmart to buy a drm free cd, then yes, you are locked in by your own laziness and stupidity. Amazingly, all my music and movies play on every one of my systems and in my truck.
Now as pointed out, they ain't a perfect company, but I would say much friendlier than the alternative. Or maybe I'm just biased because i've been burned...
But back to why Apple articles rock. We have clearly demonstrated it brings out the best of everyone on here.
1. Anti-Mac people let loose a hail storm of complaints which are just hilarious. It's amazing how many people hate apple for no good reason... well other than the pompous attitude of some of it's user base. (why can't we just get back to hating on $MS honestly)
2. I actually like hearing about a company that is innovating in the marketplace rather than shouting, "ME2!!!!!!!!" Can't think of the last time I saw $MS actually invent something they couldn't sue, buy out or copy.
I own two vehicles, a 1700 Yamaha Warrior which I drive daily, about 45mpg.
But since I live in the bush, hunt and fish constantly and pull horses etc my other vehicle is a 2008 GMC sierra 1500 crew cab short box. This has the "displacement on demand" cylinder shutoff. It's a 5.3L slightly modified LS4 engine. I get around 16-17 mpg in the city and on the highway is about 18. The highway mileage is low for the truck because I have the 4.10 rear axle ratio. The 3.73 rear axle does much better, but you lose 1000lbs in tow capacity. The sweet spot is 55mph, which I can get 20mpg at with the cruise on.
Of course, compared to the other trucks I've had on my life, this truck gets about 2x the gas mileage. We've come a long way! I wish I would have waited another year though, 2009 GMC is releasing a hybrid 1500-series ton truck. Bummer!
Ballmer points out something we all missed: The study where an increased number of User prompts results in a more secure system.
I imagine this showed the more you tick a user off, the less time windows is physically running because the computer is powered off... thereby increasing overall security.
This is probably very true. Wonder what this will do to the future of wikileaks with the FBI and Secret Service getting involved.
In all likeliness, the timing of these events is probably something like the http://digg.com/apple/Macworld_2008_Steve_Jobs_keynote_speech_leaked considering the reputation of this group

Seriously did anyone else read the headline and think this was another article on how the Large Hadron Collider was going to end life as we know it?
Every time we do something stupid, the doctor should prescribe electroshock therapy instead of vikaden... just to make sure the experience was painful enough we wouldn't do it again.
PHP is a minor evil perpetrated and created by incompetent amateurs, whereas Perl is a great and insidious evil, perpetrated by skilled but perverted professionals. -- Jon Ribbens
Amen.
Gee, maybe if we just were more polite, and just asked these bad men nicely we could make a lot of friends! and everyone would like us cuz we hand out candy and stuff and we could omgpwnies in pink together!
Comon hippies, how about some loyalty to your coutrymen first and then we'll think about making friends?
The bullets come out of one end. Point that away from you. Are you seriously unable to figure it out? Maybe I should draw a picture.
Also your comment, "most firearm incidents are unintended," what are you smoking? I have had a firearm "incident" about three or four times since I was 8 years old. These "incidents" involve learning about responsibility and safety, things my parents taught me. We like to call these "incident trips" because we go out to a field and have "incidents" with our guns. Oh, and during our "incident trips" no one has every gotten hurt. Turn off the TV and go outside.
Sigh, still no cross-platform support for Malware!

why do you read it if you don't like it?
If my wireless was as fast this, I would have had first post.
Free Memory is wasted Memory. Even-More-Modern operating systems like Linux and BSD manage memory incredibly efficiently.

And if you actually believe a politician is going to do anything he says, you are an idiot.
offtopic... but funny none-the-less
Obama can't make up his mind on anything... like fisa. So good luck, but hey, Obama says you can *always* hope :D
Actually, I do enjoy bashing. Thanks :)
