Hm, I'm pretty sure I played RoN. Most of the problems I run into are with the installers that detect the OS, in which case there an Installshield switch that installs it so you can do a network install, -r or someodd. Can probably google it if needed.
Oops, I subliminally included all of that in trimming server fat. Yea, it sucks if you don't have the time/don't want to tweak it, but I prefer using it over XP now. I can spare a day of my weekend every couple of years. (Actually, haven't had to reinstall yet, though I basically did when I had a massive utter failure of my comp - somehow the mobo dieing took out both harddrives:\)
We are. You missed the entire point of the thread - using it as a desktop system. Plenty of corps use 2000 fine, and will be fine for them. Not for me, who's always adding some random new hardware.
You and me both. I use it as a gaming OS too. Awesome once you trim down the server fat you don't really need on a desktop. It's XP without the bull, and hand-holding.

Heh, H&R Block are giving Ken a "lifetime of free tax and financial services."
Congarts to both Ken and Nancy Zerg - of course I fall asleep and only wake up to see the smoldering ruins!/. definitely needs to get an interview with Ken; he's defintely reachable, apparently he posts quite a bit on the Jeopardy message boards!
And in 5-10 years, it's also just as likely that you'll be stuck with a pretty coaster because it won't run on the new OS without an upgrade that won't be done since the company doesn't exist.
You said it yourself though, you can still crack it. So it's not really a coaster, is it?
I can't think of any recent game I play where the company is no longer active in one way or another, i.e. if it used an online activation, I'd be SOL.
He may be overplaying the advantage of Steam a lot (personally, I don't think he is) but certainly, you're overplaying the downfalls of the system much, much more.
I was expecting actual abuses of the system, but half of the article is about the things that can potentially happen? Sure, the Earth can implode tomorrow, but those aren't getting front page stories on Slashdot.
Are there any cases where this has been abused? Why not post those?
Hm, never thought of that. Let me know what happens when you try to activate it - I'm curious whether it tries to connect to Steam the standard way, or if it has any alternative connection/activation methods.
1. Once you authenticate once, it doesn't go on the net at all. Period.
2. I'll wait until there's definite proof of people without internet who have the comps to play HL2. Besides, you just said it yourself, 10 years from now you can download it from the abandonwarez sites.
3. What are they going to track, the fact you played the game? Also, read 1.
I bet you there are parts in ANY country where you won't always feel safe. You may have said it's not a troll, but that doesn't make it any less true.
Geez, having an awful time getting access to the graphs and all that fun data. So much for that 8gbps then huh?

Proof positive: Software Quake runs at 30FPS on the very latest 624MHz machines. 15FPS on a 400MHz XScale.
If he knew, he wouldn't have had to have clicked the link in the first place.
He WAS hired - he works for Valve now.
I think that's their mirror stuff, not trapping code.
The fact that you don't even know what it's called leads me to think you don't know how fast or slow PocketPCs really are.
Comparing my Zodiac2 to my A620, speed in OS operations is about comprable.
4 hours AND valedictorian?
:P
Let me just express my disliking of you, says the 50th percentile
What a PR opportunity for H&R Block too:

And you would be wrong
Maybe no one is telling the company's to F off because simply THE MAJORITY ARE NOT DISPLEASED WITH STEAM?
I don't really give a crap what it does, as long as it doesn't make me go out of my way. Which it hasn't - along with many other people.
The world isn't black or white, just because Windows' activation sucks, doesn't mean I have to start the second Crusades against Steam too.
If it's anything like me, it'll go home and cry.

Wouldn't it be 3/4ths of your life, since half of half is 1/4th? :P

Of course it'll be cracked, it's actually quite trivial to take a Steam game and make it non-steam - once it's decrypted that is.
However, it can not, and will not be cracked *BEFORE* release, which other developers/publishers should take note at.

Think about it: How many people do you think have the systems to *play* Half-Life 2, and can not get an internet connection, not even for a second?
And why would ANYONE be unwilling to block it from authenticating? It's either do it, or you don't play.
Don't you mean FireInternet?
Shows a lot about the Slashdot mods when a comment like that is modded funny.
