We are talking about a Rolling Stone article... a half-gossip magazine. The "entertainment industry's" take on politics... why is this even on Slashdot? Of course the election was rigged! This would explain why the disjointed, disorganized, and divided Democratic party lost an election to an incumbent. Lets just keep making excuses if it makes us feel better.
A very wise person said that "even evil people can do good things (though they may not realize it)"
History says that DCI was arguably evil in the past, but does not indicate future evilness.
Actually, it takes more than a cheap pc http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/8829/24991 7.html to make it nice looking. I could barely run it on minimum resolution on my 2.4ghz p4, 1gig ddr, geforce 4 ti42000. I tried out a $100 radeon 9600 card and it looked alright, but the 360 can run it hd no problem. Try to get a pc to do that out of the box for $500. Also, COD 2 is a great game. Some games are not fun online, but COD2 is made for it. I don't know why the 360 isn't doing very well, but it is definitely not because it is a lesser system. PSII was eclipsed almost immediately by the x-box as far as graphics, controller, and games. Maybe there are not enough Japanese games for the x-box? At any rate I have found Sony dissapointing in every way. http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/4/8567.htm l
Of course there is a market for this. Maybe not 24/7 gaming, but the occasional tournament will definitely be on there. I play Call of Duty 2 online and used to play Warcraft III online and have encountered amazing players. I would definitely enjoy seeing these players match up. Think of baseball. I know a lot of people that say baseball is boring to watch but fun to play. However, there are as many people that love watching baseball. Once there is an understanding of the game, the nuances involved in playing it can be appreciated all the more. Forget whether its a sport or a game or cyberathletes or anything... what it comes down to is whether or not one can appreciate the excitement involved. I say there is a market and the market keeps growing.
Sony has pissed me off ever since the onset of memory stick. As an avid photographer, I knew I should avoid Sony at all costs, but I have several friends that haplessly bought a Sony camera only to find out that the memory sticks cost twice as much as any other flash memory. Sony is continuing on that path with the PS3. I can't wait to get an X-box 360. Yes, it uses lots of power and has had some problems, but it is far superior to any Sony offerings. The PSP is another example of a Sony failure. At first glance it kicks ass, but the battery lasts about as long as my 6 year old Inspiron's battery when it's left unplugged. The battery lasts about 2 hours when using a game that has decent graphics, and that is when it is brand new. The battery only gets worse from there. Oh, and how about such wonderful things as Blu-ray costing 4 times as much as HD-dvd? I just don't see why anyone buys anything from Sony. I hated the PS when it first came out... PC games had much better graphics... I hated PSII when it came out.. PC games had much better graphics... and I have found the X-Box and 360 to be much more similar to the PC gaming experience... which nearly anyone who has played games on the X-Box versus the PSII will confirm. Has anyone tried out the Sony Connect music store? I have and wished I hadn't... it was a waste of an hour of my time trying to figure anything out. Oh and if you do use it, you get to use Sony's "feature-packed" music app (an awful abberation of a computer program) and a proprietary Sony music player. What could be better?
the key is cost. For that much in a pc, you can much more for the money. A toshiba laptop with a bigger display, twice as much RAM, the same core duo processor, a tuner, bigger hard drive, and more costs the same http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/test_report/0,prodi d,28245,00.asp
Are you sure that you aren't just a mac fan because they look pretty?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Listen to the money. Money talks
I have used macs extensively for graphics, and they lock up/freeze/generally go crazy just as much as the pc. Also, did anyone forget to mention that a pc has a better price to performance ratio. PC's generally cost more. More software, more parts vendors, more manufacturers all drives the price down and the quality up. Competition
but where is the software? ilife is great, but where are the alternatives? The biggest problem with a mac thus far has been the lack of software compatible. Games are another big issue. Even a mac that runs windows doesn't have the power to run the top of the line games like Half Life 2, Battlefield 2, and other graphics intensive games. Macs have traditionally had 'average' graphics cards included with them. Unless the only games that you want to play are the Warcraft series, macs can't take the games.
I completely agree. An understanding of how these works is essential in order to understand higher level functions implemented on top of these things. However I disagree that every programmer needs to know certain languages inside and out. A basic understanding of how something works is sufficient in most, if not all cases.
Geeez people. Graphical orientation. HDTV. 256 mb video card. 1600 x 1200 resolution. Kids nowadays typically start out on windows. They grow up in a culture as described before (HDTV, xbox, PS2, etc). What are they focused on? Graphics. Making a web page with a hacked copy of Photoshop to show off. I think more kids now are focused on the web aspect of programming. Java, css, php, and more are giving a new life to the web and kids now are focused on that. It would be pointless for a kid to go back and try to create his or her own "flash" or "css." Why not just use the tools available? If someone has already written a script, why not try to improve instead of redo? I have experienced this myself.. being a young'n myself, quite frustrated with C++, I simply moved on to something that I could see results in quicker--web and graphics. 3ds max has a scripting language that allows one to utilize opengl and direct 3d without a complete understanding. Its about using the tools that were built for us and not focusing on basic or turbo pascal.
In the Peoples Republic of China, a country with a dubious human rights record and known for cracking down on its citizenry, a national ID card is required. However, in the US, a social security card serves nearly the same purpose. What it comes down to is that it is the government and not the ID that makes the difference between oppression and harmony.
JUST MAKE THEM PNG's with transparency
PNG > GIF
Transparency means it doesn't matter what color the background is!!!!!
Someone thought of this before.
Well said, however if someone wants to focus on web programming, how much knowledge of circuits and processor design is really needed? You are correct about no EE classes being required, but the classes that somewhat combine the two (processor programming, etc). I agree, there is no way to seperate A and B easily, but having been in the B group, I know that A is usually catered to.
As a student at a major university (the University of Michigan), I must say that our CS department is extremely lacking. Computer Science must be taken either in the form of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) - where CS is combined with EE (lots of useless info) or through the School of Literature Science and Arts (LSA) where the CS program is more direct, but students are required to take the EECS classes. One of the biggest problems is the use of the most basic programming class as a 'weeder' class instead of an actual learning tool. The class is made excessively difficult to weed out students (even though the students may simply take more time that 2 weeks to get acclimated to programming). The problem might be with curricula.
I'm sorry but 5k for a little chip that makes my opteron a little faster? I could just buy another opteron for that price: http://www.pricewatch.com/cpu/419325-1.htm> The price is supposed to drop to 3k next year. How does this affect cooling?
I want Command and Conquer to go abandonware... The greatest game ever played... But it can't because of... ESA -> a terrible thing that prolongs copyrights long after nobody cares.
One of my professors does it... I am unsure whether or not it increases efficiency, but I can tell one thing: I see many of the students that bring laptops to class playing games on them. Someone always has freecell or solitaire up and is not paying attention to the lecture. However, I do believe that the student is paying for the education, and they should be the one to decide.
Is this story on slashdot because the average slashdot reader is a concerned citizen or because anyone that reads slashdot knows that myspace is a hodgepodge of horribly unintuitive features that is so ugly to look at it makes one want to cry? I think we are all just looking for an excuse to put that nasty behemoth of web site out of its misery. Myspace creates much social interaction that would not otherwise be there. The people that do nasty things would do so without myspace.
{I might not have actually said anything, so mod me down if you want}{}
The poor music industry thinks that a tax will help them innovate their clearly out of date business model. How about get rid of the "music industry?" What is the "music industry" other than a cd copier? The artists are clearly not part of this "music industry," and in fact it consists of "record companies." Well I have news for you "music industry"... there are no records anymore... there are downloads and cd's. Nobody calls them "records." Here is a sad story (for real, not sarcastic): The great Paul McCartney was not allowed to play his own songs because of copyright issues... he didn't have enough money to buy his own recording rights and so Michael Jackson bought them. McCartney did something that the "music industry" should do: adapt. McCartney could not sell cds with Beatles songs, so he just TOURED. Touring, meaning: giving the consumer something that can't truly be downloaded or put onto a cd or dvd, allowed him to continue making massive amounts of money. He didn't ask for a tax on beatles songs so he could make money. Down with the music industry.
Google allows a user to upload a video to their website in practically any codec. In fact, they do not specify what to or not upload. There was a line advising users that they would be contacted if there were problems converting, but I am sure that the software google uses to convert videos has few problems. Perhaps the future of video codecs is not so dire because of such software. Already, we have software such as G-Spot (which is not as profane as it sounds) that allows users to identify all of the possible codec information on a video file.
New slashdot poll: Do you like Sony or Microsoft worse? -Sony -Sony -Sony -Sony
Since all we need is a majority of files, its a realtime compression scheme of 51%. ------ Thats what I would do. You do whatever you want.
The CUTEST WEBSITE EVER BY FAR is the Hudson Valley Youth Soccer League's website. It was proudly made in frontpage and sports some very intuitive features. Enjoy
bacteria nearly always grow exponentially in population... its just that with small numbers it is not as noticeable
There is already an unofficial one available that lets a person use their Gmail space for file storage. https://www.xmailharddrive.com/
