First of all tags are not exclusive to the blogosphere - they exist on the boardscape (see boardtracker for example) and of course on the many social nets and pretty much everywhere else.

There are already microformats for defining tags which can and should be used.

Tags are for building a folksonomy and created 'by the people' so are by their nature, to a certain extent, personalized and flexible.. what makes sense to you may make no sense to everyone else but so what? You made it, its good for you and thats good enough.. however chances are it will make sense to some other people anyway, no matter what or how you tag, so its all good.

Maybe he used to be a cabbie..

He suggested we should use our minds to be creative rather than remembering things, which is perhaps not such a bad idea.

If maintenance is so expensive, sling the whole thing out and buy another for $100.. still way under $970.

Unless these laptops are utter crap I would think most would work quite happily for a reasonably long time anyway.. my cheapo laptop has been running for several years and these days I leave it switched on 24/7 for months at a time (running linux of course ;) )

What training? Give these things to kids, provide some docs to get them started and they will do what kids do with computers - they will figure it out and learn as they go along. I certainly don't recall getting any 'training' on my first computer (zx81!) but I got the hang of it and it was great even without internet. I am of course assuming they can already read, if not then thats not the fault of this 'one laptop per child' program. As for training teachers - if the kids can figure it out, so can any half decent teacher.. or just get the kids to train the teachers.

Net connections are so expensive? I think not. Bring in one decent connection to a village hall or school and run a few nic cables around or use wifi or dialup. Worst case they could use UUCP like the good old days.. the internet existed before broadband although maybe those poor kids would have to do without youtube and myspace.. so its not all bad!

The $100 laptop could be great and open up a world of knowledge and opportunities (not just captcha cracking!) for many. The naysayers should button it and let the OLPC people get on with the job.

Interesting, can you please provide a source for a Muslim state swearing the destruction of Israel.

Well ignoring the numerous wars conducted by arab/muslim states against israel which would appear to me to be a fairly clear case of 'actions speaking louder than words' and indicating a desire to destroy israel..

It is the sworn, written, publicly declared aim of hamas to reclaim all of what is now israel 'from the river jordan to the sea'. Hamas is the elected government of palestine. It was also previously part of the palestinian charter during arafats day but was (at least in theory) removed.

Iran and in particular Ahmadinejad, frequently calls for, praises the idea of and clearly dreams about the destruction of the 'zionist entity', 'regime', 'disgraceful stain' or whatever other way they choose to call it without actually using the name 'israel' - these are all a matter of public record and no spin posted on a wiki page will change that.

Lets not forget that 'the holocaust never happened' as far as he is concerned, that even if it somehow did that it was a euro issue and so europe should provide for a 'zionist state' instead - thereby again removing the 'disgraceful stain' from its current location.

Also just to show the mentality of the 'lunatic regime' in iran - they recently announced the winner of their holocaust cartoon competition (now an annual event). Any mosques or embassies being torched as a result?

Iran having nukes is just a bad idea all around since the likelihood of them actually being used is uncomfortably high and that would really ruin the cruising season in the mediterranean for a long time.

The point is that things can and do break and when you're in the middle of nowhere you're a bit stuck (sods law dictates that they will break at the worst possible time ;) ) if you are not able or don't want to climb masts.. so a powerboat of some kind is preferable for many people and if it doesn't use any fuel then its a bonus.

As for the solar yacht doing 6 knots (actually 5 - 6 knots) 24 hours per day - that is what they say it will do. I would think their engineers have worked it out otherwise they wont get very far - it has 65 m2 of solar panels which is probably a bit bigger than the usual thing you get on a yacht this size.

  25. Yes they do.. on Solar Boat To Cross the Atlantic · · Score: 1
Well I have seen many times people clambering up masts for various reasons (generally not just for the fun of it) and always on modern yachts.. things break at sea and sometimes those things are up the mast.. have you not seen Ellen MacArthur doing exactly that? If not then I suggest you read her own account of mast climbing and the (not) fun it can be at sea. I'm fairly sure her yacht wasn't built in the 19th century and I am equally sure she knows a thing or two about yachting!

If you read the site about that solar powered boat you will see they say it can sail at 6 or 7 knots 24 hours per day as long as there is sun in the day and when there is no sun they go slower.

It is not a race so comparing it to how fast you could go with a sail powered yacht is missing the point entirely.
