It's strange at first, but then look at Nintendo's plan (or stated plan). They want to bring gaming 'to the masses,' so they've been flooding the market with several different versions to appeal to various groups. Maybe the iPod group will go for the Micro, while the innovative crew goes for the DS. Then there's always the SP, for the core group of GameBoy fans. A lof of hardcore games attribute 'new system' with 'more powerful,' but Nintendo isn't going in that direction with this latest venture.

OF course, there's always the Virtual Boy, but then again everyone has their Pauly Shore moment, right?

Not quite the reaction I was prepared to get... defending high prices by calling middle America 'whiners' for not saving and saving and saving to buy an expensive system?

And the whole "high price equals quality" thing? Someone didn't take Logic in college methinks. Since when? Not only is such a belief ignorant, its dangerous to personal finances.

Taking the blatantly stereotypical "inner city youth buys Air Jordans' point to task -- Air Jordans sure looked slick, but did they make you jump higher, as all the hype in the commercials promised? Sounds like someone pre-oreded a system and is having some subconscious buyer's remorse.

On a more flamebait note, I think the Sony/MS interns need to put down the keyboards and leave Slashdot a lone for a while. Count to ten and breathe deep while reciting "I am in love with a $500 -- but really pretty! - paperweight"

did American kids get so damn rich? Did I miss a memo? Same goes for the parents, I had to beg for an N64 and that was $250 and umpteen years ago. Message to Sony/MS: We don't all live in houses with Viking ranges, infinity pools and boat houses. Remember that video games have 'game' in their title. You can shove all the 'value' into a system you want, but if it's expensive it's still, well expensive. Otherwise we'd all be listening to Bose theater systems after a jaunt around the country club in our Ferraris.

Finally the PSP has been given the flexibility it needs to become an all-in-one media device. /sarcasm Anyway, it's great to see Sony trying new things to try and sell games -- package them with a UMD! Then the gamers are forced to buy them, thus pushing up the game sales numbers to better compete with DS. However, I have to object to the strategy of packaging a crappy movie with crappy games (Wipeout exlcuded), with hopes that crap will somehow cancel out crap.

Zelda came out when, in the mid to late 80s? I think this is a strong indicator that the median age of the gamer has risen from the early days when many of us started playing. It sounds corny, but Link appears to be growing up alongside the kids who first picked up the game with their NES. Many of us, meaning me, are 24 now, and there are a lot of me's out there who played Zelda and still follow the series.

However, Wind waker appears to be that 'funny period' where Link couldn't decide which side of the fence he wanted to play on, but from the looks of this latest title he seems to have settled on something. No, I didn't have such a period; not that there's anythign wrong with that.

Gotta give to the American gaming public, they love slick marketing so much they went out and bought something they probably already had in their collections and then bought some $30 UMD movies to go on top of it. I'll just continue to watch my $17 DVDs on my wireless laptop and listen to my iPod and save myself the $250 until Sony stops porting year-old PS2 games to the PSP. I recently saw an article lambasting the gaming industry for lack of innovation... but I'm starting to think the blame for all this vanilla is being put in the wrong place.
