I think Mac OS will still be around and I definately see Linux gaining some serious ground. I think LongHorn / DRM will start to get some animosity and it'll cause people to reconsider what Microsoft's real system shoudl be named.
Completely Restrictive Application Portal. When someone says Hey! Get This CRAP off my system!, you know what they mean.
I'm loading it right now and I can't wait to read it (site is slow ATM). My first thoughts is that this will be a karma whore's wet dream. One central document to cut and copy for almost any article on/....
Right now it's loaded to section A.6 Forking and showing some serious slowdown... Maybe he shouldn't have posted an image of himself in the bottom corner...
The article is *very* misleading-
Here's the *REAL* source of this news bit That's right, MicroSoft.
Their ISP provider went bankrupt in 2001 (fancy that) and gave them 2 weeks to switch their code over. Very misleading article.
What's worse is when a worm is already emulating this service. I remembered reading some stuff about people recieving emails from dead people thanks to Klez. Still can't find firsthand stuff....
if you're trying to do physics, math, or symbolic logic, then get yourself a cabin in the mountains.
Yeah, it worked for Ted Kaczynski! Harvard, Berkeley, PhD mathematics! Isolation isn't the cure - Technology is like any other aspect of your life. It needs balance.
Remember a ways back when Microsoft announced codecs for use in digital theatres. I'm not sure of implementation #'s but this was when they could have staved this off. Trusted Computing, DRM are here because Hollywood was a huge proponent of these technologies. Here is your bed, Hollywood.

While you're getting your own domain, use that to your advantage and sign up on websites so you can track if they sell email address lists
Extract from today IRC session.. names changed accordingly
[IRCer1] hrm, looks like ajc.com got hacked [IRCer1] getting bounces for spam with ajc@(domain_removed) as the return address [IRCer1] only place i've used that email address is ajc.com [IRCer1] so either they sold their mailing list [IRCer1] or got hacked by email harvesters [IRCer_2] i'd call they sold it
Heh.. I know that AltaVista's code is on one of those machines at MicroSoft... Time to get the FBI crime teams in and confiscate some (ALL!) of the servers.
There's afunny bit about the article - "Once people start examining the features of Mozilla versus Internet Explorer instead of looking at a brand name . . . I think they'll see there's a lot more value".. So the article links to a review of Steve Bass's browser comparisons.. He doesn't demarkate between IE broswer shells and true standalone browsers at all and he didn't like Mozilla or Firefox because it looked like "corporate Netscape". HELLO?!?! Theme Manager! You can make it look like IE!
Liked the article, thought the followup linkto was asinine.

"The law, which never took effect, would have authorized fines up to $50,000 for the crime of placing material that is "harmful to minors" within the easy reach of children on the Internet."
This may be one of those stupid juggler tricks.. Hey! Watch me juggle 9 chainsaws.. and they drop some chainsaws a few times... Then.. a sudden miracle happens and they can do it!! Everyone feels like they've witnessed/ took part in an amazing feat!
Comdex... Cancel once.. resurrected a month later! Yay glad I could take part in what could be "the last one"!
Just once, I'd like to see the chainsaw land on an important part....
I for one think that the public criticism of the Open Source developer community is healthy.
I agree. The only problem I have with it is that we're being assailed from almost all directions in very specialized markets by "subject matter experts".
Take us on in the major media.. sure we can handle that.. it'll be rebuked and discredited easily.
Take us on in 300 niche markets with paid mouthpieces of elevated status and it's a little harder to defend each one on the turf it's fought on. They're trying to use attrition against us and it's a battle that they shouldn't be fighting.
Linux has no single front.. appears to have unlimited supply (as long as the internet is up), plenty of great talent, and attrition is truly on our side.
Every time you have someone ask you to get rid of their spyware, refer them to mozilla or firefox. Every time you have someone with a problem with the cost of a full blown Office suite, refer them to openoffice or star office. Every time you have someone with a problem with viruses, mention that your PC doesn't get infected and that you use Linux. Every time you hear someone bitching about the price of software, mention that your software is free.
Don't use these as bragging points - these are sales points. You have to be willing to follow through with the sale and support it. I have *NO* problem supporting workstation Linux for friends.. When I set it up, I know they can't fuck it up.
Longhorn & DRM will change some minds. Virii will turn others away. Attrition is on our side. Fuck the think tanks. Bring it on.
I think it smells of trying to get the genie back into the bottle. Right now the Microsoft/MPAA/RIAA axis is trying their damnedest to create a culture that is entirely controlled by the media corporations. I'm glad that this bill has the backing of some serious technology players. If DRM isn't controlled in the next few years, it could spin wildly out of control.

A better analogy would be the Pinto that erupted in flames when it crashed......

Get revenge too.. When your boss asks you to DDoS a website, make sure you post his website on /. ;)

Isn't this the host of Insomniac? I'd be unable to sleep too if I shared the same bed with Microsoft. Sleep with dogs and you get fleas.
Blah.. Let the astroturfing begin.
That would be in the butt, Bob...
YES It exists, I actually saw segment recently aired on TV before you snopes hounds jump on me!
It's the web exteansion of Microsoft's Patent for Encouraging Internet surfing!!! Don't do it!! I'm sure there's prior art, but don't do it before the patent is struck down!!!

I heard it was one big Excel workbook with a tab for every SSN#.
