I live in the US and I love soccer(football), people ask why haven't we really adopted soccer as widely as the rest of the world did, it's still relatively young but things like this (charging to see the games) are impeding the wide adoptation of it. Companies are so short-sighed and just want to profit as much as they can, instead of stepping back and letting us American see the games for free and help build a soccer fan-base that could be comparable to any other.

  3. Re:most confusing thing about linux on Squaring the Open Source/Open Standards Circle · · Score: 1

In a community such as linux's, and corporate companies involved in creating standards? Impartiality? With the exception of Intel, the companies seem respectable and while I do use their software and services, I wouldn't feel comfortable with them creating a linus standard. They are ultimately capitalistic companies who would undoubtely work an idea that would fit their company with little or no change, at the expense of the linux community. Even the article states: "At the end of the day, the LSB is a development platform standard." So why don't they call it a linux development standard, not a linux standard, which is misleading. I'm not against open standards, I just prefer that linux kernel developers, coders of its core system and linux distribution heads doing this, not some random organization attempting to speak for linux users in general. The interview does talk about that, the lack of participation.

"The problem is with said vendors using, redistributing and profiting from OpenSSH without making even a modest monetary donation in return." and what let's them abuse and profit from that? The BSD license. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not picking on the BSD license, actually most of them out there suck. It's actually a multitude of problems that plauge this certain topic, Like Theo stated already himself, they don't have enough developers, more developers means more code, more reverse-engineering, more products supported, and the end result is more users, and more users means more money being donated to the product. The only thing he can do is ask for help, more developers and more money, which is what he's doing. Going back to the hardware issue, companies sometimes do not release documentation because they want to have the competitive advantage over their competitors. Especially if they're pushing "extra features" on their hardware. If say ATI releases documentation for their latest 400 dollar card, Nvidia likes one of their features, implements it in their own shit and renames it, you have a legal battle at hand. That's extra money, lawyers and all that. So why bring that kind of drama to yourself? So a couple thousand OpenBSD users can be happy? As opposed to my hundreds of thousands of orders I get from major manufacturers, despite not releasing documentation? Bet on it though, we'll have this problem as long as the open source community lives, that's the ugly side of capitalism.

They want to raise the prices because they are losing money when their money comes from sales of entire albums. Where is the money when customers only want to buy specific quality songs on an album?

So they prefer to sell the entire album for 15 bucks or so, the customer gets stuck with buying the album only for a couple of songs they like on the entire album.

Thats why itunes is booming, because it gives customers more control over their purchases, they buy songs they like for 99 cents and not having to gamble their money and see if the other songs on the album is good after they have purchased it.

  9. an external router on What is the Best Firewall for Servers? · · Score: 1

Get an external router, Linksys technology is basically linux technology, you can download the source to most of their firmware.

I don't know what number you mean by "a bunch of servers". If you have 4 servers or a couple of switches lying around......Then a Linksys rv042 will work. Runs around 170 dollars which breaks your limit. If you really, really can't afford more than 100 dollars then get a BEFVP41.

If you have 5-8, then I'd suggest a Linksys RV082, which will break your -100 range, running about 300 dollars. If more than 8, then go for the RV016 which is 500 bucks. (Enterprise Security ain't cheap)

Personally, I'd at least get the rv042, it has features for egress/ingress filtering.

I've used Netgear, D-link, and SMC products, most of their stuff that is less than 100 dollars are just paperweight.

These routers are perfect because they remove the firewall software off your server machine to save more cpu cycles. Plus if you set up another box running smoothwall or something then you will consume more power, and that means a bigger powerbill.

These router units are small and consume much less power. I do agree running a BSD box or Linux box is probably your best solution, but if you already pay alot of money for electricity.....

Some people might exclaim that it is a genuine attempt by the government to shed and protect the US public from terrorists and if everyone followed the rules, sure it would. Terrorists follow the rules? No chance in hell, documents are easy to duplicate and this will only make the terrorists spend a couple more bucks at their local document "manufacturer". Which is no problem at all for them considering they have thousands in their bank accounts.

I seriously think the government underestimates the terrorists and well maybe they dont, they just take the US public for fools and yes the majority of the public are fools.
