I wonder how many shares "W. McDonald Buck, retired CTO of World Ban" owns in Microsoft , TCO is utter nonsence , he forgets this is a one time cost to switch , retrain , have your programs switched over , the real TCO is how much you save over the long term 10-20 years
I agree whole heartedly this seems like nothing more than xenophobic flamebait.. perhaps i am being too harsh , but replace western with white and you will see what i mean.
A country is the people and those who live there are the country.
The parent is blatent flamebait .
ive been using UML to plan out every single possiblity for the 11th of the 10th 2020
on the positive side i think ive worked out how to win the lottery and get laid on that day.
on the negative i have to spend so much time working out the possible eventualitys from each event that its going to take me untill 2020 to finish
Opengl... as a mac and a linux user i simply cant stand behind an engine which uses only directX.
now I know this may be a tad biased and a bit political but with doom3 (opengl) i have a choise as to which OS i run my game under Im well aware that i can run half life 2 with cedega and i have done however its unlikely a mac port will ever appear.
I will admit that half life 2 had better physics, and i enjoyed the game slightly more( all be it i enjoyed half life and doom/2 alot more than these modern versions)
but this isnt about the gameplay , its about th engine , if i want to use one of these engines then i simply must have doom3
Just to point out that ubuntu horay has an x.org port which you could use , so if anyone who uses debian has a problem with the xfree politics its possible to switch.
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hoary main
iirc thats the repository
to stay on topic for a while , Forks ussualy cause problems but in this bussiness Egos are going to emerge . Creative people have Egos and Egos can destroy projects , a good project leader knows how to stroke the conflicting egos properly to keep us all in line
I was recently trying out the hoary beta release(upgraded from warty) and it has aparently been quite stable for me . I normaly use promepis on one machine debian sid on another , however i felt that ubuntu deserved a go.
So i downloaded warty and played around and decided to to a dist-upgrade with apt-get to see how the latest version was comming along.
firstly the good,Ubuntu is light which really really is a positive step for a mainstream distro.
the installer only installs a minimum of software
. At first this annoyed me as it was missing a few things that i had latter had to download, alas i dont think im the target ubuntu user and my wife seemed to have everything she needed for office and internet so i realised this was a good thing as opposed to bloating the hardrive by default(*gives a funny look at some other distros in this field*).
After the upgrade to hoary i was fairly suprised how stable the unstable realease was . it had alot of very recent packages (Gnome 2.9 as opposed to 2.8) and a whole list of other usefull packages on the repositorys(which i was glad to see)
However it wasnt all good , i had a few problems with the way the root setup was handeld , basicaly the first time a user opens the root console from the menu you must enter a password for root. Now thinking about this im not sure if root was sitting aorund with a default password till this point or was simply deactivated however i do disagree with the handeling of this matter.
The installer although being an old text installer ( which i prefer) was very light on options even in the expert install , I can see where this is a good thing for the novice user, however i imagine most novice users will also prefer a gui.
The last problem is one i personaly never experianced , however talking to a couple of freinds who installed it on a drive containing windohs,It apears that the grub instalation is slightly buggy in some set ups and wont point to the windows instalation properly (this was with warty and im not sure if its still a problem in hoary)which is a a real problem for alot of novice users(and for me having to walk them through grub setup),
all in all though it was a very fine distro, with only a few problems which i understand the ubuntu team are working on/worked on . Hoary seems to be very good and the repositorys grow daily .
It certainly is a victory for the personal freedoms of people over in the USA.
The right to view so called illicet material has nothing to do with the gouvernment.
What consenting adults choose to do in the privacy of their homes is up to them, If they wish to publish it on the internet for free or for profit then it's up to them aswell.
If John Doe wishes to go online and look at two(or more ) consenting people "Getting jiggy" then why the hell does any gouvernment have any right to restrict a persons freedom in this manner.
This is a a wonderfull step towards ensuring your rights and i for the first time in a long while have read a story about the USA courts and not been down hearted.
alot of the religious or right wing people may find this stuff shocking , personaly im not a pr0n fan myself but and this is a big but(depends on the porn...boom tish..) It is a persons right to choose what they view and enjoy aslong as it respects the rights of others . If you dont like porn then (here comes the cliche) Dont buy it , dont read it , don't use it.
Sure as hell dont try and stop other people from doing what they enjoy.
Lastly i must say again how good it is to see a positive news story about peoples rights being upheld
Or perhaps a post about slashdot readers who admit to RTFA.
correct me if im wrong but the last story was about sony turning tails on the mp3 issue and this is about the "father" of the Playstation talking about being frustrated at the uper management refusing to take risks
it just hapens to include some info that is a also in other storys.
if the everyday press wern' to dupe parts of information in storys we would have some rather confusing bits of information
So with RPM being the official standerd where does this leave distro's based on debian , or even gentoo.
I personaly am a debian user and thus a little biased towards dpkg and havnt been a great fan of rpm.
Debian has many comerical offspring and a vast array of other distros which use the dpkg/apt-get combination.
Having RPM as the official standerd dosnt mean that debian would have to change its packaging system but i see this causing problems for those debian based distros in the bussines sector!
Living in europe , and having several difrent european email address , i cant recall one bit of spam that came from the EU.. im not saying it dosnt exist but logicaly since i have a.de email address (germany) why is all my spam in American english (im not german i only live here) but everyone i talk to around here gets a vast marjority of the spam from companys in the USA........anyway...
Verizons policy seems to be the equvilent of chopping off your legs because you have a rash on you right big toe!
Maybe the fish wernt trudged up by the tsunami , but the story certainly trudged up a few trolls.

Yes unfortunatly some of us do have learning disablities which make spelling and grammer slightly tricky. so hopefully they will also be solved by 2020.but thankyou for helping me see the error of my ways and the great crimes i have commited by making a few spelling and gramatical errors
Yes im sure Linus would be terribly afraid of having to pay for all the kernels he has sold.
what with the millions of linux users.
each one paying a sum total of 0.00 per kernel compile
so if we divide 0.00 by the several million kernels then linus would crash
taking into account the german MWST which is 16.9%
remember this is over the bass price which is still alot more than the price of the base american unit.
so that kind of mutes the point of the VAT
take a look at the imac g5 the 1.8ghz model.
this is nearly 500USD more expensive in germany.
33% import tax , i think not.
being very liberal with an estimation i would say they are charging a 15% premium atleast
I have been really angry with the apple store for the premium i have to pay for apple hardware being an EU resident.
For example the price in dollars is the same as the price in euros nearly
$499 != 498 , however this is how much of a premium we are forced to pay .
It dosnt seem bad till you consider this is a 25% premium nearly , i could understand(possibly) a small premium for a foreign language version, but when you want it in international english its a mute point, perhaps say bar 3-5% for things like tax.
Instead of buying a powermac , which i could afford without this premium.I am forced to buy one of these mac mini' or an eMac.
it may seem like a good idea to charge this premium. but you are knocking you customers down a product range
People who think this is overpriced are missing a fair few things here
sure you could get a headless dell for less
but it wouldnt have the design quality
it certainly wouldnt have a power requirment of 80W
It wouldnt be nearly as quiet as the mac mini
It would certainly take up a hell of alot more deskspace
It wouldnt run OSX(With pearpc you could, but that is very slow and kind of a mute point as its emulation)
the chances of it having firewire , would be slim
so before you judge it on price and performance alone , try and find a pc that will compare with all that (well except running OSX)
not to mention the high quality combo drive ( or superdrive if you wish)
Nothing wrong with a bit of case-modding that adds style and functionality to a dull old box
But.........
Isnt displaying info on the state of your system the monitors job , or some other form of easily accesable component . RAM is useualy not in a position that would make this of any use .
I can imagine people dangling over there cases and hanging upside down in order to read the funky panel ,
whilst all the people with some form of logic have saved the money and bought a front mounted LED panel
I wonder how many shares "W. McDonald Buck, retired CTO of World Ban" owns in Microsoft , TCO is utter nonsence , he forgets this is a one time cost to switch , retrain , have your programs switched over , the real TCO is how much you save over the long term 10-20 years
