  1. Re:Why use a tiny keyboard on the 17"? on Apple Updates PowerBooks · · Score: 1
all PBs come with a "full sized" keyboard. have you even used one? almost all the keys are the same size as the standard keyboard. (the only exception is, afaik, is the return key on the 12" which is a bit shorter.) if you are talking about separate inverted-T arrow/home/end/pg up+down keys and/or numeric pad, then that's different.

i think apple would like its user to be oriented at the center in relative to the monitor. that's why those extra keys aren't offered. but even 12" do not have "minature" (sic) keyboard.

can the consumers also accept that DRM is the price of the convenience? frankly, i don't understand these "just because i can break it, i will break it" attitude. the mild DRM imposed by iTMS poses no problems for most users (otherise, you can't explain how iTMS has sold over 250 million songs in less than 2 years) yet was necessary for apple to convince the labels to let them sell music online.

if you have problems with the DRM, don't buy it. if you want to crack it, yeah, that's cool with me, i don't really care. but i don't see why we need to get up and arms about it - CDs don't play in a tape player, even though both mediums contain the same music. should we crack the CDs so it will play in a tape player too?

i see your point to a degree, but it's also a fact that no matter how good the product is, no matter how low the price is, no matter how compelling the offerings are, some, non-negligible amount of people will "pirate," and think nothing of gaining personal enjoyment (or worse, profit) at the expense of others, including creators, right holders, distributors and above all, respecting/paying consumers.

i don't know the proper way to deal with it. but i can see why DRM is being used. i don't think it's as black and white as, "it'll never work, so just quit it."

i don't think so. google is a general search - even if sites with illegal mp3s come up, it's not deliberate, with "malicious" intent. by having a linked page for specifically for music, i don't think there's much debate on what the intent of the page was.

a bad analogy, perhaps, but if a guy publishes a list of contacts for pedophiles to identify families with children, i think thats' a crime. general purpose telephone book that could be mined by users to accomplish the same thing isn't liable the same way, no?

...if you want a Mac desktop.

however, even if you are in a laptop market, it's never a bad time to switch, i think. next-gen PB will be a speed bump, most likely. rumored dual-core G4 or G5 are highly unlikely, and even without those, i wouldn't call current PBs "sluggish." i have a two year old PB - 867 MHz G4. it's been doing great because CPU speed is one thing but OS X is quite another. (the difference, however, will be perhaps less "shocking" for you since you use linux, not windows.)

if you were thinking of Mac mini/iMac, go for it now. otherwise, if you can afford to, might as well wait a few months at most for PM/PB update/price drop. i imagine something will happen with the iPod (since you mentioned, even though it's not a Mac, per se) by the two year anniversary of iTMS in late April.
