I don't care a fat rat's ass about that track having some DRM on it. It plays on the Mac under iTunes and it'll play on my iPod (when I get around to buying a replacement for my dead 2nd Gen iPod)

Stop perpetuating this myth about iTunes still having DRM'd music tracks. They aren't. "They haven't since right about January 6, 2009.

Sure, they are still AAC encoded, 192kbps audio files and that will piss off everyone who thinks they are an audiophile, but they have no trace of DRM anymore

And for the love of god, please don't bring up the fact that your email address is tagged in the metadata of the song... we bitched and moaned about perceived lack of ownership for nearly a decade and when they finally get rid of DRM restrictions and put a tag on it that says, "Hey, this song is yours," everyone still gets upset. Think of it as the name on your underwear--it's your music. Enjoy it.

  3. Re:Home schooling vs. school duty on US Grants Home Schooling German Family Political Asylum · · Score: 1

Huh, despite the fact that this will be attributed to 'educational establishment dogma' or some other such nonsense, personal observation (five individuals, a ridiculously small sample set) seems to indicate that home schooled children do seem to have social developmental issues, but not in the nerd, sit-in-the-corner-and-read-your-book sort of way.

Quite the opposite, every one of the five home schooled people I knew went on to become major partiers, either starting in high school (3 of 5) or college (2 of 5). All five made some huge mistake because of this excessive socialization (unwanted pregnancy, flunking college, etc.) because of this behavior despite having a much better GPA in High School.

100% FAIL in a cross-country sample set (though small) is a little crazy, isn't it?

That said, your suggestions of group socialization may curb that. AFAIK, these folks did not have that available.

Now before you go patting yourself on the back, I find it ridiculous that you actually have to ask the question: "Do you really believe that children develop desirable social traits by learning how to interact with others from other children?"

Of course they do, otherwise they just become supervised automatons. Most of the things that make me "me" were developed without adult supervision. Your goal as a teacher and parent isn't to create a tiny copy of yourself with your own biases and hatreds--as you've pointed out, but apparently failed to implement with that question--it's to mentor your children in such a way that they can make informed choices without you around.

  21. Re:August on Navigating a Geek Marriage? · · Score: 1

This is a decent first year marriage list, but as with all things, there are shades of gray that develop the longer you are with someone.

1: Never go to bed angry. Actually, never go to bed angry at your spouse -- you can be pissed off at the dog all you want; just make sure they know you aren't pissed at them.

2: Find a few minutes to connect with your wife every day. This is a good statement followed by mushy crap. Instead of saying variations of, "I love you," actually try doing something with her. Go for a walk, catch a movie, cook dinner together, etc.

3: Never say the word divorce. Unless you guys are discussing ways to get tax breaks... (this goes back to the whole, "Laugh Your Way to a Good Marriage" thing someone mentioned above)

4: Agree with each other that when you're having an argument which gets particularly heated, it is ok for either person to walk out of the room, and the argument can just wait until tempers have cooled down a bit. Let me sum this up: "Agree that you can walk away from an argument."

5: Always put your wife first. This is true up until they stop putting you first. This is a point of mutual respect and once that respect is lost for whatever reason, you need to sit down together and get it back. For example, you're a gamer, she isn't. Invariably she *will* get you to stop playing games and do something like watch TV instead. This is a breakdown of this rule on both sides -- if you're a gamer, there is nothing wrong with that, but there needs to be compromise from both parties. It can't be all one-sided.

And two of my own additions:

6: It's almost more important that you *LIKE* each other than love each other. The moment you stop liking your spouse is the moment you start going downhill.

7: Compromise. You have to if you want to stay together. This dove-tails nicely with #6 here.
