As with most of their products, Apple tends to dictate the user experience to an unusually high degree. For whatever reason.

And if you ask their users, the vast majority will tell you that it's the best user experience in the world.

But no... you're right... Apple probably doesn't have a good reason for it or anything. I'll bet the possibility of third party apps never even dawned on the them during the what, four years this thing was being developed?

It's not really about watching it on the iPod. Apple is gunning for the living room media center market with the introduction of the Apple Remote and Front Row. We've ditched TV and cable altogether in our house and now have a Core Duo mini, .5TB drive and a 23" Cinima display as our media center, and it's flawless. Plus, the videos encoded at the iPod resolution hardly show any pixelization or artifacts when viewed on our display from 6 feet or so.

Well, the only other model that would have been replaced would be the 12" PowerBook. As the high end MacBook meets that PowerBook's price point, I can't see them introducing anything else for a while. Besides, the differences between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro are very few. I don't know what they would introduce on a 12" MacBook Pro that would manage to differentiate itself from the MacBook without overshadowing the MacBook Pro.

Of course, at some point in the future, we may see new models (like the sub-notebook or tablet), but I imagine that they are done introducing new portables for at least a year (upgrades to current models excluded of course).

Have you every tried paying cash in the US Health Care system? I had a dentist that I loved dearly, compared to some of the other dentists I've seen - this guy is the best in the field I've come across. My insurance used to pay him $650 for a root canal and crown. But he charged a cash customer $1500 for the same thing.

It's not the doctors fault, he's not out to rape cash customers, he's trying to make ends meet. The reason that uninsured medical costs are so high is partially the fault of private insurance companies. Your doc could charge $800 for a root and crown, cover his expenses (lets say $650), and have some money left over to take home ($150). If he got $800 bucks every time, it would work. Unfortunately, the private insurance companies use their muscle to reduce the amount that they will pay, so the doc is forced to accept this lower payment ($650). Well that covers his expenses, but it certainly won't leave him with a paycheck, so he has to charge the uninsured a bit more to make up for it.

However, MedicAid and MediCare are the real reason why healthcare is out of control in this country. Docs are required by law to accept both, and neither of them pay anywhere near enough to cover expenses. While the insurance companies will haggle down the price to $650 with your dentist, MedicAid and MediCare give him $200, take it or leave it. The fact that the doc has to accept these programs leaves him screwed. He loses money on every procedure, and has to hike rates to make up for it.
