When i was about 8 years old, during the mid 80's, my dad, a commander in the US navy and head of air operations at a naval air station, took me to work.
It was an awesome day, i got to see the pitch black control room with blinking lights and green radars, got a tour of various planes and helicopters at the base, then i got to hang out in my dad's office in the control tower.
There was this cool looking phone, not just any phone, but a bright red phone with no numbers on it. I had never seen a phone without a dialpad before. So, I pick up the phone. It rings maybe once and then someone answers it franticly, and I immediately hang up. Well about that time I notice fire trucks are rolling near the airfield and the phone starts ringing again and my dad rushes in the office with a startled look on his face. He answers the phone and apologizes to whomever was on the other line. My dad wasn't that upset, but let me know that I'm never to do that again.
You see something that you don't perceive as an advertisement, and because of that it has a better effect than had it been an advertisement.
If you enjoy a grainy 5 minute clip from a show on YouTube, it might entice you to check it out on your television. Especially if it's referred to you by a friend, then its a whole social dynamic that advertising begs to capture. Word of mouth is powerful, because people generally respect a personal opinion more so than a fake corporate one.
I take a black marker and complete an arrow next to the item I wish to cast my vote for. There is an election official next to the machine which reads in my ballot and electronically tallies my votes, along with the rest of the votes for that district. That way you have both a paper trail with the convenience of electronic tallying.
Don't be scared of technology, if you have been fingerprinted, this is nothing different. That is the perfect analogy. Sure, you can try and make the argument that DNA will list all of genetic faults while a fingerprint won't, but i think Gattaca is still a long way off and protections can be built into law which will prevent such genetic profiling.
Rapists leave DNA and not fingerprints. Even if someone feels like their personal privacy is being invaded, if it solves even just a handful of rape or other horrid crimes, then it's worth whatever misconceived big brother conspiracy that some will obviously believe is taking place.
Let me preface by, I'm about to completly talk out of my ass on a subject I should not ever discuss because I haven't the slightest experience or education on the matter.
Why would it suck if it erodes?
Lets assume a space elevator cable can only last one year. Launch another tethered rocket! Weeee! It would still be cheaper than current space travel.
I fully expect a response explaining why I'm an idiot, but I would like to hear the explanation.
good! he's a fraud and deserves punishment. Sounds like the prosecution has a lock case. Although I only think we're hearing about this because of all the political baggage stem cell research carries. There are plenty of people defrauding governments and companies worldwide.
This will be yester year's technology when the next architecture comes out. In the video card market new archs seem to happen every year. My new cap on video cards is $300/year. I got a 7900gt, you can do a voltage mod and buy a $30 cooler and by overclocking, get the same performance as a 7900gtx. They both use the exact same gpus. Google for guides
I never said it was "right". I was just saying that this has been an ongoing problem for awhile, but I summed it up in two words. I didn't mean to express that sentiment.
Have you ever been sued for a bad debt? If so, chances are your signature, along with your application for whatever loan or credit you defaulted on is all public record. That usually contains a whole lot of personal information, not just limited to your SSN.
Your post inspired me to make a suggestion to help make up your mind as to wether google falls under 'fair use' or not.
Google maintains their news medium by researching search engine technology and web news sites. Google then describes the sites for people who can't view them all. That's a service that many people (myself included) find valuable.
Google's first and only real responsibility is producing a profit for it's shareholders; "Make money for our shareholders, Don't be Evil.". Making money is not a bad thing, and when you make a good product, money is the tangible reward, that's capitalism in a nutshell.
Google claimed the thrown of search engines, but they know someone might one day build a better search engine technology. It's best not to have all your eggs in one basket. It's the responsibilty to the shareholders to ensure Google doesn't lose big one day.

Google is just reporting news on the news.
