Did I ever state it only uses power when changing the screen? The SCREEN only consumes power when changing the screen, it doesn't need power to hold an image.

I don't know the exact differences between 'off' and 'sleep' (some say off == sleep) and 'normal' but I know that sleep at least disables all of the buttons except for the power switch and turns of the wireless. I assume it does something like 'hibernate' (ram->flash, everything else off) or 'sleep' (keeps ram powered, mostly everything else off) on your standard OS.

Eh, it's not THAT bad (at least not on my kindle). I'd say it's slightly worse than your average mass market paperback book but without the downside of "oh yay, they were running out of ink during print and now I can barely read this" or "oh yay there was too much ink and now this is all blurred and I can barely read this".

However, higher contrast and something even close to a true black would be really really nice. I wouldn't mind being able to read hardcover quality ink without the weight and size of a hardcover book.

It's useful because otherwise you'd have no easy way to tell the device was in 'sleep' mode (basically off). If it fell asleep with the last screen up you might not know it was asleep, start hitting next page or other buttons and be like 'wth why is this not working?'.

I suppose it could create a notification on unused screen space instead (like the battery indicator). I fail it see why it matters either way, there would still have be to be two screen changes: just one would be the current full screen change and the other would be a partial screen change.

Like you note the power use of two page changes every now and then for sleep mode doesn't really matter anyway because of how little power it is.

There is no proprietary lock-in with the Kindle (at least any more than the other ereaders). In comparison to the Sony eReader it doesn't support native ePub but it supports native Mobi which seems about as good. Hopefully Amazon will cave to demand and patch in ePub support. Both support native PDF. And isn't LRF/LRX the Sony proprietary format? Amazon uses AZW for their evil proprietary DRM needs instead.

You can buy ebooks from where ever and convert them and read them on a Kindle. I suppose if you bought all of your ebooks from Amazon you'd be stuck with the Kindle normally to read them but there have been ways to strip DRM via the Kindle for a while now. As far as I know no one has published a way to remove the DRM from Sony's DRM'd ebooks though. And yes, Calibre is awesome for such things.

I dunno, I like my Kindle. It works, feels pretty much the same as reading a book (eink is almost the same as real ink to the eye (including viewing angle) with just slightly worse contrast), and allows me to read books comfortably but without taking up huuuuuge amounts of bookshelf/storage space.

No one makes you buy ebooks from Amazon with the Kindle. And if you're super paranoid about Amazon seeing what you read or accessing your device or something you can hack that out or just keep the wireless turned off. Yes, it's a niche market luxury device. Yes, it's not perfect and could use some software updates. You don't spend money on such a thing if you haven't researched it or are scared of going hungry.

An injustice to one person may seem small and frivolous at first but when you factor in that said injustice likely happens to other people as well then I think you see my point. There is a reason small claims court and class action lawsuits exist.

From my understanding many stores won't carry video games that are rated adults only (and nintendo/sony/microsoft don't allow AO games on their consoles or at least limit it).

No 'government' level banning needed, though I suppose one could argue that for something as big as a call of duty title there is a lot of pressure on the ESRB to give it a kind rating.

Apparently they tend to have a lot of children and supposedly are having problems with genetic diseases due to marrying within their small community so repetitively. Those kinds of costs hurt their smaller communities economically no matter what.

Eventually if such problems are true in their communities, even with helping each other out, they'll end up owing a ton of money to hospitals all around. I'm not hating on the Amish and I think it's great that people who choose to live that way can. I'm just not convinced it's the best way for 7 billion people to live.
