That's your problem. If you believe something enough to insist something (that can't yet be accomplished) will never be accomplished, you're closed-minded. It's that simple.

People in the 1950s said a computer would never be able to fit inside a regular-sized room, let alone sit on a desk. Anyone who proposed a portable computer was ridiculed.

What you're proposing might as well be a comparison between dd and rawrite, and how fast they burn either a fully installed Linux or Windows image to disk. Pretty pointless, if you ask me.

Though in my opinion, the fact that they used a restore disk negates the validity of the test anyway. If you want to compare a Linux distribution installer versus a Windows installer, then use the goddamned Windows installer. A restore disk is NOT a Windows installer; it's an image writer.

    You don't get it.

Sun's original lawsuit was not about the non-inclusion of the JRE in Windows. It was about Microsoft's "extension" of Java in their VM. Microsoft made their VM with Windows/Microsoft-specific "enhancements", and when programmers use these routines, they become broken on other platforms.

Sun had every right to say "Hey, you're breaking our language. Stop that crap right now, and do it the way we tell you."

When Microsoft first wanted to ship their VM, they told Sun "Sure sure, whatever you say." when Sun told them not to "extend" Java with their own bullshit. Remember Microsoft's track record with "Embrace and Extend"? Sun wanted to avoid that.

So Microsoft went ahead and created their modifications anyway, and Sun said "Okay. Stop. No more. We TOLD you not to pull that shit, and you did it anyway." Hence, the original lawsuit. Sun wins, and Microsoft says "Fuck you then.", and totally removes the VM.

THIS time, Sun is saying "Hey! Monopoly Abuse!", so Microsoft throws in this old, broken, shitty, outdated VM in a service pack so they can say "There, happy?"

I mean, if the entire Titanic can realistically be rendered, why not be able to render a person in real time with realistic voice synth and physics?

Are you serious? If you are, you obviously have absolutely no grasp of how 3D modeling works.

Rendering something like the Titanic is easy. (Not easy in the sense that anyone with a copy of 3D Studio MAX can do it, but easy in the sense that it's just a ship.)

When you create something in 3D like the Titanic, it's based on specifications that do not change. Lighting is constant, shapes stay the same, and moving parts are minimum.

Compare that to attempting to duplicate a person, detailed, in 3D. People are tremendously harder to do than objects, because people automatically scrutinize other people. That's why when you look at a movie like Final Fantasy, you can say "Wow, they sure are realistic, but there's just *something* not right."

With a person, you have to deal with mouth movement (a very difficult thing to model in 3D), eye movement, muscle expansion and contraction based on movement, bending limbs and joints, breating, and a whole host of other factors. Then when you get into voice synthesis (which is still not perfect, but AT&T is making leaps and bounds.), and physics modelling on things such as cloth and water... It's all very hard.

So between rendering something like a ship moving through the water, or creating a realistic person in 3D, the ship is a lot easier to do. It may be painstaking in detail to create, but it's still just basic shapes.)
