I use Avast! (switched from AVG recently), although Microsoft Security Essentials has been mentioned a lot so might be worth looking into.
I have run into a few problems trying to uninstall AVG. First not all the versions would uninstall (something was still running and I couldn't stop it). Had to remove something from the Registry to stop whatever that was from starting on Windows start-up. Still wouldn't uninstall so I tried to delete the folders from Program Files, but was stopped because of a similar reason.
I think it may have been because (or partially because) it adds 'Scan with AVG' to the right-click menu for files, which I had to find and remove somewhere from the registry. Will hopefully be able to remove the folders completely now, I don't run as Admin by default and haven't switched users in a while to try.
I used to use (and recommend) AVG, but it recently seemed to make my PC whir all the time (I moved house recently so have the base unit on my desk now, instead of previously under the desk when I probably wouldn't hear it overly whirring). Plus it had problems updating so was complaining that it needed to update, but then wouldn't (it may have been because I don't run as an admin, but I really didn't want to switch user every time it wanted to update its virus definitions).
Switched to Avast! and it seems to be working fine (once I turned off the random talking voice). Scans don't take as long (I don't think, they normally run in the background), computer doesn't whir as much. After long periods of time of not having a virus found, I've switched a daily scan to be a quick one, with a more thorough one at the weekend. And it manages to update itself without needing to be logged in as admin! Yarr!
10. Because I can. Seriously - if there was a way to delete all ads from TV, wouldn't most people do it?
I usually change the channel when adverts come on and watch something else for 5 minutes or so.
Also, i have been listening to the radio recently and there are loads of adverts on there, a lot more since when I used to listen a few years ago, they even have the presenters saying company slogans periodically.
Google is robbing the readers off the experience of seeing good creative graphic design of other sites by showing content in its crappy looking interface.
I would assume that if someone had subscribed to something they would have seen what the website looked like in the first place. Even so it is a little unfair on the bloggers revenue wise but i suppose that would depend on whether the blogger just wants money or cares more about who reads what they have to say.
What I need is a Firefox-plugin that looks exactly like IE (including the lack of tabs and search box) while still providing the same level of security.
You could set Firefox to open links in new windows instead of tabs, like in IE, and there is an plugin that lets you resize the search box next to the address bar, if you get this plugin you could feasibly set it to make the search bar non existant. Deleting the 'Bookmarks Toolbar Folder' will get rid of (I think) the links in that folder that show up below the address bar.
Seeing as there are bloody loads of underground train stations, wouldnt buying loads and loads of these scanners push the prices down due to a high increase of demand?
The simplest would be to make a secret webpage for her and set that as her homepage in IE. Although that is trivial to change, whoever steals it (or buys the stolen thing) will probably boot it up and start IE, hitting your web page.
I think it might be possible to have IE open or run when the computer first starts up, it happens on one computer in my old school when anyone logged into the network on that single computer, it would probably be better to saving the webpage as a favourite and launching that file as opposed to running the program IE to the default homepage because if the homepage changes, anything implimented will go wrong.
I have seen a USB device that, when the user walks away (if they have a special key ring or something attached to them) the computer locks and doesnt unlock until the user comes within a certain range.
I read somewhere (probably slashdot actually) that iPods are more likely to be stolen then most other things.
Also, why chain a laptop to a table? Wouldnt it be a lot easier to get a desktop PC and chain that? It will be a lot harder to physically move and larget chains can be applied, then all you need is a really cheap laptop that can run Linux an OpenOffice or something, so that any work done on the move (laptop) can be moved to the desktop and saved, if you wand a back up then i suppose you could always email files as attachments, even using Gmail, most prople could probably store quite a lot of work just on one gmail account.
Something else to think about is would lots of ads in a game make the loading time a lot longer?
I can just imagine if they release another GTA game, if its like the last one (you have to eat) then Rockstar could get loads of money by replacing Clucking Bell and the various other food places with McDonnalds and other fast food places, while at the same time adding a sence of realism to the game (as some others have said already)
And while we're on the subject of passwords, can we please get rid of those "change your passwords EVERY THIRTY DAYS!" systems? God...those have probably done more to propagate the phenomenon of writing passwords down than anything else.
Things like that really annoy me but luckily I dont think i use anything that forces me to change any passwords every x days, although if i didnt have to do so i would go by a system of password1, password2, password3 etc.
Something that i find useful is not using a strange string of characters but names, think of two or three people that you know, preferbally people with uncommon names and have these names as a password with some numbers seperating them, for example: name123name456name789
Something like that would mean that its going to be hard for anyone who knows you personally to guess, let alone someone who hasnt a clue who you are.
Sometimes complicated passwords can be typed easily, i guess the faster you type the better you are at remembering where the keys on a keyboard are and the faster you can type in a password without anyone looking over your shoulder and reading, also, typing in the same word over and over commits the key places and order to memory to be used again.
At a guess, I would say that the lego game would look more 'real' because they are made of lego bricks which are usually pretty simple shapes, whereas the actual Star Wars game has characters that are attempting to be as real as possible but you still might be able to see some solid polygons that would slightly disort the characters.
I for one would really like to get my hands on the Lego Star Wars game, I had seen both lego star wars and episode III being advertised in the shops a while ago and i prefered the look of the lego game anyway, not sure why though.
I would upgrade but i use portable firefox (ironically, its not portable, i can't install anything on my school's network so i just run portable firefox off the network space).
Long story short, i will always have this red arrow for the next few days (until i leave school).
I did try to update with the red arrow but it completely buggered up so i thought it would be best to leave it.
My school has Open Office on some of the computers which is pretty useful, I usualy do half my work on it and can edit it at school without exporting it to a MS.doc fomat. Something that is also very useful for (mainly finished) documents is the fact that they can be exported into a.pdf format for ease of use between almost any computer.
OO is also a lot better because, in general, the file sizes are a lot smaller anyway so disk space can be saved, but this probably isnt too nececary on 1000 computers. I think there is also better ability to customize OO as opposed to MS word, besides, word documents can be opened up in OO anyway and can still be used.
From my experience, the only tinme MS beats OO is with PowerPoint, but theres not too much difference there as far as I cam remember.
I mean in the sence I can hold it in one hand with ease and read, couldnt think of another name for this type of book.

O'Reilly is well known for producing high quality books that are beautifully bound and well designed. The layout of this book is simply presented with clear typography with chapter and topic headings easily discernible and command-line sections cleanly delineated.
In my experience, O'Reilly books are really good, have relevent and interesting content and are well laid out and easy to use. After my exams im hoping to get a book on Linux, I have a handheld one at the moment by the same publisher but this one does look really good for more then just a desktop reference.
What I want, and have not looked for yet, is something that keeps my bookmarks the same between all my browsers on all my os, on all my systems.
You could try portable firefox, basically it goes on a usbpen or similar device and can be used on as many machines as you want as far as i remember.
Another alternative would be to use the import/export function in firefox normally, save a few days worth of bookmarks, export tehm and import them at home.
Going out-of-business sales and police auctions are your friends. A lot of people have a lot of old or used merchandise sitting around, and if you keep your ears up you can get some amazing deals.
This is very true, the company next to where my grandad works went out of business a few months ago and were throwing away a load of Apple computers, i was planning on getting a few before they went with the skip but was busy and missed my chance.
A friend of mine tried to watercool his computer for some reason or another, it would have worked fine but one of his extra components leaked and his computer got a lot of water inside where it shouldn't.
That last line in the summary seems to be implying a big negative reason for adopting cloud computing.
If some of the previous results are for other sites saying how rubbish the site is, would people still think its worthwhile to go there?

I'm sure lots of people will have a smart phone, laptop or other secondary device, not just the slashdot crowd.
Isn't that Procrastibation?
You could always build one

I remember the easter egg they had a while ago on the question "Is Jeeves gay?" Looks like its still there.
I am completly confused.
