The only attractive here is the fact PS3 will use it instead of embedding something open, like Mosix

I'm not sure if you're praising or knocking Mosix (or more accurately, OpenMosix), but the method by which OpenMosix migrates processes bears very little resemblance to Cell. OpenMosix's redeeming quality is binary compatibility with most, if not all, existing software written for whatever architecture the cluster is running on. Cell resembles MPI more than Mosix, by far, in that software will have to be recompiled to take full advantage of Cell's capabilities. No, the OS will not automagically solve everything.

The Icube or something like that

You're referring to the Power Mac G4 Cube.

I just remember the product was a flop and the price was around $1000 which was not bad for market conditions

The price was not even as low as $1000. The price was, in fact, quite bad for market conditions.

It would overheat and have weird flakey crashing problems. It had a gforce card or something for video? How would this $500 cube thing differ from that flop

I've never heard of overheating problems with the Cube. There are Cubes expanded/overclocked to around 1.4 GHz from 500 MHz with nary a heat problem. It didn't have a 'card' per se for video, because there was no expansion, which is precisely why it flopped. For the same price as the full-fledged Power Mac, you got something with no expansion. The difference between the Cube and this new product would be 1) the $500 price difference. You see, $500 is $500 less than $1000. 2) This may include some sort of expansion. 3) It isn't a cube; it'll have a sort of mini-tower form factor. Think of a 1U unit on end. Or it could lie flat, under a monitor ("pizza box"). This really is a great design, since it could even allow for a PCI slot or two (just look at the XServe), and since it can sit under the monitor, it would take up even less desk space than the Cube ever did.

I agree that Sony Trinitrons are fucking amazing. My first experience with them was with old Apple monitors in the late 80s (they were Trinitrons)...they were the CRTs you could buy in those days that were the closest to the 'flat screen CRTs' you can get now, instead of the shitty bulbous TVs that companies like Sylvania and Apex (and even RCA) try to sell you. Sharp TVs and Hitachi monitors come close to Trinitrons these days.

LCDs are nice, but they still just have a damned long way to go. The ones that are on par with CRTs are just insanely expensive. I'll probably buy one more CRT before I go with an LCD...

  24. Re:What are other manufacturer’s policies? on Samsung Announces Zero Dead Pixel Policy · · Score: 1

I can confirm that they don't have an official zero-dead-pixel policy, but there is definitely an unofficial one. Personally, I've never seen an LCD in an Apple product with a dead pixel. This includes my current Powerbook, my father's last two Powerbooks, my friend's iMac, my other friend's iMac, another friend's iBook, and every single Powerbook, iBook, Cinema and Studio Display I've seen in any Apple Store. However, I've read a few stories about dead pixels on various mac forums and, apparently, they'll accept any returns within the warranty period, if you do it right. For example, if you call their support line and say you have a dead pixel, I'm within the warranty period, can I have a box, they'll send you a box overnight. Once they send you a box, you're home free. But if you just walk into an Apple Store and say, let me have a new Mac/display because I have a dead pixel, then it might get a bit tricky, because they might refuse at any time, plus they can see for themselves. Generally, though, I'd like to think that Apple gives their customers the benefit of the doubt almost all the time.
