Its an example of how and why open source projects get started. The example is on a small scale, but I think its more applicable to the majority of us than are larger projects.
What's up the the HTML Formatting today. This is the second post I've made where its been screwed up. I made sure that the right option was checked this time. Oh well, I didn't intend for my above post to be so difficult to read. It looked much better when I previewed it.
Is it wrong to contribute to open source for those reasons? It seems kind of against the whole FSF philosophy, but I'm a bit too much of a pragmatist anyway. No, its definately not wrong. I think it was Adam Smith (famous economist) who said: It is not from the benevolence of the butcher or baker that we expect our meals, but from their own self interests. That's paraphrased of course, but its pretty close. Your reasoning is really the essence of capitalism. Its what drives our economy. The idea is that through the satisfaction of your own needs; services, jobs, and wealth are created. After all, one of the reasons people begin writing open source software is to scratch their own itch so to speak, to fill a need they have. This paper expresses some ideas also found in some of ESR's writings. Your post raises the question of whether people are actually capable of a purely benevolent action. Even if we do something for someone else which has no material benefit for ourselves, we usually recieve some sort of non-tangible reward such as self-satisfaction (that warm fuzzy feeling). Anyway, to sum up, no, there isn't anything wrong with what you proposed. It's what makes the world go round.
For NuBus PowerMacs MkLinux is your only option as far as I know. I use it on my Nubus Powermac. MkLinux doen't get much press but its great for those with older machines. Newer machines won't be left out, but due to the smaller community, it takes longer for support for newer machines to be built in. A new version is due to be out RSN (Real Soon Now) which will provide a much needed update to the libraries. I can't wait for it. There aren't many binaries available, but just as with LinuxPPC, most apps will compile just fine. Typing./configure, make, make install isn't much more difficult than installing an rpm in my opinion. Don't overlook MkLinux. Check out MkLinux.org for more information.
What do you think has been the impact of free software on lower income people and relatively unwealthy third world countries? One, seemingly, advantage of free software is to level the playing field between wealthy and poor in terms of information technology.
Are they able to take advantage of the availability of this software and if not, what can be done to make it avaiable to them?
That doesn't make this program cost-free, it costs these people the $125k they'd be making at work.
$125k? Is that U.S. dollars? Where is it that everyone with a college degree makes $125k per year? Tell me, please. I'll get up from my desk right now, pack up and move there today.
Please, no, don't. Don't say that. Take it back, please.
DO NOT ask for legal advice on Slashdot. It's useless, pointless, irritating, and a complete waste of bandwidth. Do you really think your going to get some good legal advice here?
I believe that OpenBSD is probably the most secure free OS out there, but how does a redhat system after running Bastille Linux compare with it. I would think OpenBSD would be much more secure due to the code auditing, but Bastille Linux would seem to give you a very secure system yet retain all of the flexibility and usability of Linux.
German beer, while better than the piss that Americans apparently enjoy drinking, gets a little samey after a few liters.
Do you have any suggestions for beer available in the US. What's your favorite? Since I've always lived in the US and American beer is all I know, I don't have much to compare it with. I haven't tried every kind available, but of those I have, I like Corona the best.
I respect your reason for not using the word. My comment was more of a jab at the momentum of public opinion than at any individual.
Personnaly, I'm uncomfortable using the word. But I ask myself why I feel this way. The best answer I can come up with is fear of reprisal. Which is the reason you gave for not using it. I don't consider myself a racist, I try to accept people for what they are(which is very hard to do, I'm human afterall). I don't need to use the word, I guess I just don't like being forced or manipulated or convinced (whichever term you prefer) to think and act a certain way.
Boy, that's really offtopic! What's this story about again : )
Overall, Netscape 6 seems great. But there are a few details I think they should straighten out.
1. On IE 5 I can hit ctrl-home to take me to the top of the page ang ctrl-end to take me to the bottom of the page. This is extremely convenient because it also puts my right hand near the page up,down and arrow keys. This allows me to scroll up and down the page at what ever speed I please. Netscape does not make use of ctrl-home or ctrl-end. It should.
2. The Bookmark manager doesn't seem to work correctly(yes, I know this is a beta but I'm just listing things that should be fixed).
3. If I hit the back button, I'm taken to the top of the previous page, not to the point where I had left it. This is a real inconvienience and should be fixed.
4. The theme is ugly. Hopefully there will be skins to fix this.
5. It seems to treat p and br html tags opposite to what I would expect. I haven't researched this completely, but on my web page it simply broke the line where I used a p tag and it broke the line and added a return where I used a br tag. This was opposite of the way IE 5 handled it. (Now that I've previewed my post the p tags seem to work properly. My page uses a style sheet, maybe this has something to do with it)
Well, his argument isn't completely pointless. Although I don't think it necessarily applies to just Gnome/Kde. I have an old machine, one of the first powermac ppcs, and X is just slow. It doesn't matter what Desktop Environment/Window Manager I use.
That being said, I think its probably best to leave these machines to what they do well and not expect newer software to handicap itself by trying to cater to older hardware as well as newer hardware. After all, you can usually get a 150 - 200 Mhz pentium for around $200 or $300, monitor and all.
So my plea to those of you on the net is "Don't victimise those who express some slight anti-American tendancies on the net; net spelling is American, net dominance is American....world dominance is American. The pro-USA, sickly-sweet propagana never ends(perhaps you don't even notice it anymore), so indulge us once in a while"
ok, I can see how the ubiquity of the USA could be irritating. It would irritate the hell out of me if I wasn't American. I do notice the pro-USA propaganda in the news, but its difficult to see since I don't see too many other points of view. It's especially hard to see at the time it happens. Usually its only years later, when I look back on certain events, that I see how wrong certain things were. Maybe that's something the Net can help change, providing other points of view I mean.
America insists on the right to hold arms. Obtensibly to defend oneself, one's family and one's property. Defend them from....other people who share this right to hold arms. These weapons are responsible for countless deaths each year.
I'm afraind we'll have to agree to disagree here. I know from experience that we'll never change each other's opinion on this matter, it's one of those topics which people have strong feelings about. But saying that, I can't resist explaining a little bit about why US Americans feel this way. For me, it really goes back to our creation as a country. The people who founded this country were essentially rebels. They were fighting what they believed (and I agree) to be an oppressive government. They were only able to do this because they had the means to fight back. That, I believe, is why they included the second amendment(The Right to Bear Arms) in the Bill of Rights. I think it is significant that it came second only to The Right to Free Speech. I think that Americans who feel most stongly about this subject do so for the reason I just gave, not because they want to hunt, or protect themselves from criminals. I think those are important things, but not the reason for the second amendment. I think alot of US Americans feel distrustful of government and would be even more distrustful of a government which does not trust its citizens with arms.
Sorry for the rant on the second amendment, I could go on all day about this. Mind you, I'm not trying to convince you to think the same way I do, just to explain a point of view that many non-Americans (and some Americans) don't see.
Greetings, I work for the MPAA satan. I'd like to explain our reasoning bullshit behind placing these helpful mind-control messages lies inside our movies advertisements.
You see, we belive that the citizens of the world suckers need all the help they can get to battle the evil subversions free-speech, free-thought of todays society. This is just our way of lending a helping hand. I'm sorry if the lies truth being reported about us have caused any confustion enlightenment.
PS: Good News! The price of chocolate just went down.
Is anyone else suspicious of the recent news of Tom Green's testicular cancer? Everything I've seen looks legit but being that it's Tom Green and being so close to April Fools day, I can't help but be suspicious.
RootPrompt.org is another slashdot clone I've found. I kinda like it. All of the stories I've seen posted so far have been from the same person, I assume he's the guy who's running it. Quite a few people seem to have created accounts for the site but few people are posting. Still, it looks promising.
I've noticed this as well. I had assumed that I had made some bad moderation, but I try to take care to moderate wisely and I rarely moderate down. It had crossed my mind that some people might be meta-moderating for the sole purpose of screwing with the system. Now that I've seen a few other people say the same thing, I'm inclined to believe this. This could really screw up the system if their were enough people doing it.
I think I first noticed my karma dropping early this week, but it hasn't changed for the last day or two.
It might be a good idea for Slashdot to host a third party(sort of like the crew that originally developed slashdot) developed site for something like this. This would provide people with a freestyle slashdot like area for this type of discussion while:
1. Not burdening Slashdot with its maintenance
2. Providing an area where topics and comments are not controlled by an Andover employee, thus eliminating all those irritating comments about how slashdot has sold out, and
3. Giving current Slashdot readers a single area to go to rather than trying to chose from the large group of Slashdot-lings that have been cropping up.
I admit this may not be the best solution, but its one idea. Would anybody else care for something like this?
I'm a United States citizen. I really makes me sick to hear people take certain events in the USA and stereotype the whole country based on those events. The US is made up of individuals just like any other country. Just because some self-righteous nuts and low-life rent-a-cops want to instill their own twisted set of morals on the youth of this country doesn't mean everyone here agrees with it.
I've seen this type of attitude in alot of discussions here on slashdot in regards to actions by individuals, companies, and politicians. I don't think it right to stereotype any country for the actions of a small group.
And one word about politicians, for those who say its our fault for what these people do because we voted for them, please remember that the choice of who to vote for is very limited. Its most often a matter of choosing the lesser evil.
Somehow, the quote at the bottom of the page seems very appropriate for this interview:^)
How come you always here this phrase in movies, "This guy is either really smart or really dumb"? Are the actions of these two very different groups that similar? If so, then maybe employers should start hiring really dumb people, they work cheap and they get the same results as really smart people.
I feel sorry for the citizens of Japan, who produce some of my favorite creative works, that they have to live under such an evil government.
:o)
Are you saying that there is a such thing as a non-evil government?

Personnaly I think the moderators have a great sense of humor. They are also sexy coding gods (hint, +5 flattering).
Are they able to take advantage of the availability of this software and if not, what can be done to make it avaiable to them?

I think its kind of ironic that you would quote such an anti-politically correct movie yet sensor the line in an attempt to be politically correct.
Remember, words aren't bad, people are.
