" They aren't going to spend $100 million if it's only going to bring in $10 million. Nor should they. Nor should the government. It's fiscally irresponsible and it's not someplace I want my tax dollars going. The fact that the public is NOT paying for something that it does not NEED is what I'd consider the "public good."
So how much return on the $200 billion+ we have spent on Iraq can we expect? I am guessing, based on your post that you support Bush and the War. So based on your argument, the government shouldn't spend money on things for the public good that don't result in a positive financial return. Where is the financial return on the money the Government is spending in Iraq for the public good?
"Right, and that's why the United States spends over $0.5 Trillion dollars a year on social security... that's more than we spend on defense."
So you are saying that the fact that we spend half a trillion on social security is evidence that the far left has alot of political power in this country?
Thanks for the laugh, that is a good one. I didn't know all the retirees in this country were on the far left. Makes you wonder how the hell Bush won the last election then.
"There have been numerous court cases resulting in repeal of various religious connections in governments. I'll be curious to read your response and look over the references you will provide to support your argument."
I will be curious to look over the references you will provide to support that statement.
"The left has prevented any new highway construction in California of 30 years."
What? Guess two of the freeways I will drive home today don't exist. 105 Freeway (completed in 1998) and 210 extension (completed in 2002). Both of those were built within the last 10 years.
My concern with a system such as this, and what has stopped me from abandoning my DirecTivo, is how does this system change the channel on my DirecTV receiver, let alone 2 receivers? I don't have the option of analog TV where I live, so I must use either a satellite receiver or a digital cable receiver. With my DirecTivo, the tuners are incorporated into the unit. No IR Blaster, extra receivers, etc. A HTPC, 2 satellite receivers with their respective IR Blasters won't look too attractive in my stereo rack.
So being a "public nuisance" is just cause to have your home searched and your computer equipment confiscated?
I guess you are one of those people who think "The police arrested him, so he must be guilty." How do you know he was belligerent?
They searched his house without a warrant, and what little information they had on him wasn't justification to obtain a warrant anyway. So, looking suspicious in a public place is just cause to have your home searched? They violated plenty of American law, and if you feel that is justified, why don't you be the first to allow the Police to search your home, without cause, whenever they feel like. Maybe the RIAA and MPAA too.
"Current 'alternative energy' sources are not in the least bit viable, as their input/output energy is significantly lower, and in some cases (such as solar) negative."
Why do people on Slashdot continue to spout this lie over and over again. You think geeks would be smart enough to do a little research instead of spouting falsehoods that support their point? I am referring to the point about solar being negative.
I know, bad form to reply to yourself, but I thought that since Cheviot couldn't remember this very obvious example, I should remind him that Timothy McVeigh was responsible for the death of over 300 people when he blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
NO. The coward is the one who is so afraid of those "terrorists" that they will give up what little freedom and dignity they may have left, so that they can be protected from them by the Government.
Didn't you hear?
Bush said this morning he is personnally going to lead the investigation, and he sent Cheney down to New Orleans to start the investigation.
So, yes, we are going to get an investigation, but definetely not independent. Wonder how they will blame Clinton for this one?
The levees were owned, operated and maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers, a FEDERAL agency. Do you think that the City of New Orleans could just decide to fix them themselves? And you think the Army Corp would have just stood by and said "thanks for fixing em"? They probably couldn't have spent that $200 million on the levees if they wanted to.
So you say the flood control has been inadequate for half a century. That also puts repairs well into the terms of both Reagan and Bush Sr. Twelve years where they did not do anything either. It's ludicrous to hang it all on Clinton.
Great, the "Everything bad is Clinton's fault, everything good is Bush's work" line of argument.
Explain to me again how Clinton is responsible for organizing a huge bureaucratic organization costing billions, whose purpose is to provide "Homeland Security" completely failed in its first time at bat?
While you are at it, explain how it is Clinton's fault for the deficit, the Iraq war, 9/11, Global warming, the hurricane and the tsunami. I am sure you have already worked up a rational explanation for how everything is Clinton's fault!
Lets use your example a little futher. Why didn't Reagan and Bush Sr. do anything about these levees? They had 12 years before Clinton to solve the problem!
There is a very good reason for this, Oscars!
If your movie comes out in Jan or Feb, it is eligible for Oscar voting in December that year. Well, studios don't want the oscar voters to have to remember a movie they saw 10 or 11 months ago. So all the Oscar contenders are pilled on us at the end of the year.
Those Oscar voters have short memories.
The sooner they start blocking those under 18 from World of Warcraft, the better!

EXACTLY!! Buying gold is cheating, but twinking isn't?

Didn't you say something about falsifying data?
"unless there is some way to cut down on or eliminate commercials."
It is called a TIVO.
Why must we continually see comments like this on slashdot.
The attitude of "I don't care if people know all about me and I don't have privacy. Since I don't care, no one else should care either."
Well, Einstein, you don't represent us. Until you become emperor of the world, your opinions don't count.

That is fine as long as the deal is explained in full before the purchase, and not subject to change after the purchase.
Lets see those DVD and CD cases explain exactly when, where and how I can use that media.
"Communists take the money, peek into your bedroom, want to decide what you think and what you say and what you read."
And how is this different from what is beginning to happen in the USA right now?
What state do you live in where starting engineers make $70K? I will move tommorrow. I could use the raise.

Says 1 to 4 years ENERGY payback. Since the PV panels are warranted for 25 years, that certainly looks like a net positive to me.
Research before you spout lies.
