Dear God people, get over your pathological fear of guns! They are a useful tool and can save your life.

A "well-regulated" militia means one that is led by competent people, not one that can't carry guns.

Militias at the time of this document were ad-hoc groups of neighbors, taking up their hunting weapons (blunderbusses and smoothbore rifles) to defend their homes. As I mentioned in another reply, this is called "pre-amble", and states WHY it is necessary that "the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

As for small arms not being able to stop tanks, JDAMs, etc., that is a red-herring. These arms are for defending oneself against one's own government which is staffed with one's own citizens. It is assumed that said citizens will be somewhat reticent about dropping cluster bombs or 155mm shells on their fellow citizens. Rebellion always works in such a way. The purpose here is to make sure that the individuals are never SO over matched that the "secret police", etc., can kill them at will. The point is not to make the average citizen the equal to the US Army. If the US Army takes orders to kill you and carries them out, then you have already lost.

Besides, gun use by average citizens stops over 2.5M crimes per year, including 400,000 cases where the citizen so using the weapon felt their life to be threatened. Guns are useful tools, both for LIFE and for DEATH. Guns are not in themselves bad.

The Greeks had a piece of jurisprudence that it would be nice if our "modern" legal systems understood. No object is in and of itself, bad. Only the actions performed with it can be good or bad.

Too bad the UK High Court forgot this one.

NO...The usage is very clear and it is a pre-amble, indicating WHY it is necessary, NOT restricting ownership only to "militia", which at that time were just small ad-hoc groups of people who happened to want to defend their homes against the oppressive British red-coats.

Some objective facts that are PROVABLE:

All governments lie to their subjects.

All governments become bad/corrupt over time, requiring their removal if citizens want to keep their rights.

    Amendment II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." (Jefferson Papers, p. 334, C.J. Boyd, 1950)
"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government." (Thomas Jefferson Papers p. 334, 1950)
"And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms...The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Letter to William S. Smith 13 Nov 1787 (Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, 1939; Padover, editor)

" Defenseless people around the world killed in the 20th Century in part because they had no means of self defense (gun control) - 56 million. This total does not even take into consideration the recent genocides occurring in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia." - Unknown

"Number of physicians in the US = 700,000
Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year = 120,000
Accidental deaths per physician = 0.171 (U.S. Dept. of Health & Human
    Services)

Number of gun owners in the US = 80,000,000
Number of accidental gun deaths per year = 1,500 (all age groups)
Accidental deaths per gun owner = 0.0000188 (U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco
    & Firearms)
Therefore, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun
owners." -Taken from the Benton County News Tribune of November 17, 1999.

Look, I've paid those guys ~$180 for the ability to play about 2 games in Linux (Max Payne (a 4) & Star Empires IV (about a 3)). Every other game I had didn't work, or worked so crappily that it wasn't worth playing on WineX.

Here are the OTHER things that are wrong with Transgaming that that other guy didn't mention:

1)Their forums are the worst set up forums I've EVER SEEN ANYWHERE. They are some sort of proprietary forum software (I think one of them wrote it themselves) and they SUCK beyond all possible belief. Hell, until recently they didn't even have THREADING! Damn near everyone agrees that the forums SUCK A MOUNTAIN OF A$$. Indeed, they suck so bad it is hard to tell how many other people think they suck because the forums are so butt ugly and useless that one can't find the threads. However, despite the fact that the forums SUCK A MOUNTAIN OF A$$, Transgaming refuses to spend the two days it would take them to set up some DECENT forums. Hell, I've seen forums some 12 year old set up to run his Pokemon fansite that were 1000 times better than the crap forums Transgaming has, and they are SUPPOSEDLY a business!

2)Asking for help getting anything other than a 4-5 (perfect) score game is an exercise in futility. Transgaming certainly doesn't help. If you are lucky you MAY find someone who tried to run the same game and found a fix, but 99% of the time, you will find JACK and get no help.

    3) Almost all games, even those that are YEARS old are 3 or below (meaning major problems/doesn't run) with WineX. Add to that that I've had better luck getting Wine to run many more games than WineX (other than the FPS shooters) and you have to ask yourself what you are paying for, especially since they now have damn near as many Mac games released as Linux ones. Even if they expect to make their money off the Mac games to pay for their time, it was OUR dollars they used to get that time. Until they sell enough games in other words, WE paid for them to develop Mac OS games. Note: Oh yes, I know how the CPAs can play their games to say different, but that is the bottom line. Linux games are obviously no where near their top priority. If that's true, then fine, but come out and SAY it, don't try to pretend that Linux games are #1 and then sneak out a bunch of Mac games when we aren't looking.

    4) Every 3 months or so Transgaming releases a new version of WineX. Invariably I try all the games that didn't work in the previous version and AGAIN they don't work a whit better than they did before. Not only that, but half the time, a game that DID work now no longer does (or now has some interesting new bugs). It seems like each release is solely for the purpose of being able to say that (#insert new game here#) ALMOST but not quite doesn't really work. In this manner Transgaming is a lot like that annoying beverage machine on the Heart of Gold. Unfortunately even that machine finally got it right, but not Transgaming... and I've run out of patience.

The bottom line is I feel I tried to support the Linux gaming community with my $ and I got NADA in return, certainly not $180 worth.

I just let my subscription expire for the first time in 3 years precisely because of the WineX lack of focus. Are MAC gamers paying these assholes 5$/mnth for MAC games? Hell no. I'm tired of only being able to play Max Payne and a couple other games. Hundreds of DirectX6 games that I'd like to play and which should be EASY to provide support for just continuously get dropped as they spend (mostly fruitless) time trying to get things like Battlefield 1942 to run well (guess what, it still doesn't last time I tried it).

So I'm kissing these bastards goodbye and good riddance. Let the damn Mac users pay for their stupidity for a while.
