That's what happens when you rely upon a monopoly.
Oh, give me a break. Microsoft has had monopolistic practices, but they are not (by definition) a monopoly. Everybody uses them for a variety of reasons (a lot which is based on history, and a lot based on the fact that "everybody else does"), but not because they are the only option (which they aren't).
BitterOak is absolutely correct. If Microsoft was in "jail," it would affect many parts of the economy - some which we can't even foresee without it actually happening. The same is true for many other companies for many other areas of industry.
This is what I agree with. For what everybody says about Bill Gates, he knew how to run a business. And, although he had quirks (what smart people don't?), he made good decisions and knew technology.
While I don't know Ballmer personally, the jokes that surround him (throwing chairs, "Developers!", etc) indicate to me that he is easily angered and excitable. This is *not* a trait I would want in someone leading a company. In addition, I am not a huge fan of a lot of management. I would rather go with Jack Welch's method - just enough management.
I'm not anti-Microsoft - I'm relatively neutral and judge products as I use them (and, yes, I am very excited for ChromeOS), but I think MS has become too top-heavy and change needs to happen.
Hmmm...I'm reading my post, and I don't mean to say that it would be great 9/11 would still happen. Don't get me wrong - 9/11 sucked and I would never want that to happen again. But, when I say "what's great" is the fact that nobody seemed to stop and think about how pointless many/most of the security measures actually are. (AKA, I was attempting sarcasm and it definitely did not come through...my apologies.)
What's great is that, even given today's security measures, 9/11 would have still happened. Nothing that those terrorists did on 9/11 would have broken today's laws.
You can see a personality? Wow...you're pretty freaken talented...
Looks is not necessarily inversely related to personality as much as people like to tell themselves that to make themselves feel better about their bad looks. There are very good looking people with great personalities and very ugly people with the personality of a tree stump.
I have. I think it was on the soundtrack for "My Best Friend's Wedding" which is why I was able to get it even if it was an older song. Now, I just looked it up (here), and, of course, it's the only song on there that's "Album Only" and can't be bought as an MP3. Lame.
I would argue the opposite. To me, the address bar, back button, etc ARE part of the current page. For example, if I have two websites up, each have a different address and, thus, each have a different address bar. Additionally, I don't see the point of having a title bar (one reason I like Chrome so much). What a wasted amount of space when you can just grab and maneuver the tab, instead (especially as tabs become more prevalent in software).
Yes, it's in there. If you open the Options dialog (Wrench Dropdown > Options) and look at the Default Search category, click "Manage." In there, you can define exactly what you are looking for.
(I do think, though, that the options dialog could be better made from a UI perspective.)
If there is one thing I have learned - never, ever, underestimate the ingenuity of a group of kids who really want to get something accomplished. If they want to move a cannon, they'll move a cannon.
But in the end, you have to die from something. When my grandmother was 95 she said to me "I don't know why people want to live to be a hindred, it ain't no fun bein' old!"
She was overweight when I was a kid, but when she reached her mid seventies or early eighties she started losing weight. Her mind was sharp as a tack until the day she died (at age 99).
Well, sorry to hear that she passed away, but it looks like she did so before she became old.:-)
Along with this, I don't even have my television hooked up. I only subscribe to the most basic cable because it makes my internet cheaper (which is retarded - my internet should be cheaper without any TV at all). All the television I do watch is via Hulu or through a broadcaster's website. So, they aren't counting me correctly as well.
The convenience of watching what I want, when I want is too good for me to maintain a full-time television connection. I still wait for the day when I can pay for only specific channels and not a whole "package."
I may get modded troll for this, but open source != quality code. In theory, it is more likely that that is the case, but I have seen some open source code that made me die a little on the inside. Microsoft's developers are generally smart people who know their job. Many of the issues that ships with the operating system results from very poor (and too much, IMO) management. (For the record, I am not a Microsoft employee...I just like following various companies, of which Microsoft is one.)
In all seriousness, this is every person on the planet. I mean, seriously - every person has hypocritical tendencies at some point. I do agree that religious-types need to do a better job of not being hypocritical given what they preach. But, it really is human nature to say one thing, and do the exact (worse) opposite. It's easier to do the "wrong" thing and pay lip service to the right thing. It takes work to do the right thing and keep your mouth shut the rest of the time.
if apple would sell their OS separate from the hardware they'd be pummeling MS
This. So much this.
The reason more people don't support OSX (think: gaming) is because people have to have the hardware to have the OS. Well, hello!, the hardware is expensive, so the average Joe won't buy it, so the OS does not get as much use, even if it is superior. I know, if Apple started selling their OS separately, I would switch in a second. However, considering the kind of computing power I can get for half the price, there is no reason for me to buy Apple hardware, and, as such, I won't be purchasing OSX.
My 80 GB G2 SSD replaced a not too fast laptop drive. I'm now trying Linux, but I'll try Vista as well just for fun - I'll just write my 80 GB to an external drive using Gparted. These drives come highly recommended even if they would slow down to 50% of performance (which, it seems, they don't). I unzipped Eclipse to it and JavaDoc and I could see that the archiver that unzipped the.zip has some performance issues reading the index. It took longer than the unzipping and gunzipping and untarring (the Eclipse gunzipping/untarring took less than 2 seconds - yikes). The only thing faster is the tmpfs in RAM which I used to compile the OpenJDK in on my "workstation". Starting Eclipse takes now less time on my laptop than on my workstation even though it got twice as few cycles.
This just goes to show how much of a bottle neck traditional hard drives really are. A friend of mine recently replaced his hard drive in with an SSD and I was extremely impressed by the speed improvement - so much so that I'm considering installing an SSD drive on my computer as the primary hard drive and using the second as backup space.

L0L Wow. I wish I had mod points and I could give you multiple +1's for Funny. This made me laugh out loud.
(You owe me a new keyboard, BTW...)
Apple Store's next product release: iRobbed.
Actually, I heard that was the internal name of their business plan...
1) Fire Ballmer and top management

Kind of like female Night Elves...just real life.

I thought that video was a trailer for IE. Some guy singing about how he is never gonna give it up, never gonna let it down. I just had to assume.
[Didn't watch the video. Had to assume there, too...]
They will not get far.

Interestingly enough, the "use your mouse to zoom" on that map does not zoom within Google Chrome.

The Google Wave Abridged YouTube Video (10 minutes). In short, Google Wave is the way online communication should have been done.
an amazing achievement, hopefully a preview of better things to come and a brighter future for us all
It's already considerably brighter for the woman with the new fovea...
So I guess all they have to be is a religious nutjob who thinks killing heathens/infadels/etc etc is alright.
Troll Score
2/10 - Originality
8/10 - Anger Inducing Level
1/10 - Subtleness

We're all only human.
C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!
Now to do the other sites later tonight.
What, by chance, is the web addresses for your other sites.
No particular reason why I'm wondering. Just...um...want to read your blogs...
Obviously, you didn't want your wife to find out...
I don't have a wife, you insensitive clod!
Or a fiance...
Or a girlfriend...
Or a friend that's a girl...
Now I'm just sad.
