I think another, non-technical, issue is popularity. Online maps are a good idea, but most people who find them useful are already accustomed to Mapquest. Is there anything groundbreaking enough with Google Maps to persuade them to switch?
Either people aren't aware of other options (and more aren't than you'd imagine) they don't want to make a change from something they've become so accustomed to, or they're just afraid...
Don't fear the penguin!
If you don't think it's comical that an 83-year old woman called herself "smittenedkitten," either you have no sense of humor, or you're still in denial over your relationship with her...
Disney's old movies were such a success, though it does bring back bad memories of watching the Little Mermaid without end for weeks at a time...but now the market's moved on. Pixar's got the bases covered as far as audience goes, and Disney's only hope is to completely reinvent itself...good luck...
I can see it now...
We create a democracy for these poor, leaderless, aliens (who also happen to be non-existant) and decide it's our ticket to a share of their resources.
Sounds like a brilliant plan...
I'm not sure I entirely agree. It's true, I've been playing poker since I was six and am also admittedly geekish...but they aren't overly related. Maybe playing online makes a difference since everything follows algorithms anyhow, but when you actually play poker, you need to know a lot more than your odds. How to read people, for instance. If you are too analytical, this doesn't quite work...
Old SNL joke that seems unwittingly relevant. No one will remember it anyhow...
"No Coke, Pepsi! Pepsi! Pepsi! Pepsi!"
I can see a nice business here.
The catch line would be something like, "For those with nothing left to buy on Earth..."

Just what we need...fake cockroaches to do a better job annoying us than real ones do...
Mmm...how I love the artificial smell of cockroach in the morning...
"If any of this worries you please contact your Senators and Representatives and voice your consern."
It sounds like if we did, they'd take us away in handcuffs....
Hint: It doesn't.
As if security paranoia wasn't high enough around here in the first place... Interesting, nonetheless...
